Each year, hikers and muntain bikers get lst r injured in the wilderness.Search and rescue effrts can invlve 20 r mre peple. But a new “smart” drne(无人机) can fllw hiking trails(小路) withut a pilt’s assistance. This culd allw rescuers t search mre efficiently.
Scientists utfitted a craft with a single camera. As the drne’s “eye”,the camera pinted frwards. But having an eye wasn’t enugh. The drne als needed a “brain” t understand what it was seeing. And that brain wuld have t recgnize what cnstitutes a trail.Camera images, hwever, can be very difficult fr a cmputer t interpret, study leader Alessandr Giusti ntes.S he and his team used phts f frest trails t train their drne’s neural netwrk(神经网络).
They attached three GPr cameras t a single headband. One camera pinted straight frward. The ther tw were directed 30 degrees t the right and left f the centre.A hiker put the package n and then hit the trails in a frested part f Switzerland.Over several weeks, the cameras recrded a ttal f 8 hurs f vide cvering 7 kilmetres f trails.
The researchers then divided the vide int individual still images t train the neural netwrk. The netwrk learned t identify what a trail lked like. The team then tested the prgram with unused images frm the vide. The cmputer did a slightly better jb than the peple had in crrectly classifying the images. This meant the drne was ready t navigate the real wrld n its wn.Giusti and his team tk their new “smart” device t a frest with trails that had nt been used in the drne’s training. It flew alng the path, cnstantly adjusting its directin based n the images cming in thrugh its camera.
The drne didn’t perfrm as well in real-life as it did in the lab,Giusti admits. That’s because the drne’s camera tk lwer-quality images than the cameras that had been used t train it.As a result, the images being taken by the drne lked different,he explains. This cnfused its neural netwrk.
“It’s an exciting use fr neural netwrks,” says Christpher Rasmussen,a cmputer-visin scientist wh was nt invlved with the study.“Hwever, the prblems faced in the experiments shw that there are still sme imprtant issues t be wrked ut.”
