The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken it a step further—changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater.“We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,” explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光) in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by, is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off “switch” where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源)—such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway—a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输). Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
24.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.A new study of different plants.
B.A big fall in crime rates.
C.Employees from various workplaces.
D.Benefits from green plants.
25.What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineers?
A.To detect plants’ lack of water.
B.To change compositions of plants.
C.To make the life of plants longer.
D.To test chemicals in plants.
26.What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?
A.They will speed up energy production.
B.They may transmit electricity to the home.
C.They might help reduce energy consumption.
D.They could take the place of power plants.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Can we grow more glowing plants?
B.How do we live with glowing plants?
C.Could glowing plants replace lamps?

According to the GlobalTimes, it is reported that two online videos showing children telling their parents “I love you” have gone viral in China. The first, filmed by an Anhui TV station, shows a number of college students telling their parents they love them. The responses are mixed.“Are you drunk?” asked one parent. In another similar video, shot by a Shanxi TV station, a father responded even less patiently —“I am going to a meeting, so cut the crap.”
Why don’t Chinese families use those words? Theories revolve around the nature of Confucian teaching.“The parents’ responses show that many Chinese are not good at expressing positive emotions,” Xia Xueluan, a sociologist from Peking University, told the GlobalTimes.“They are used to educating children with negative language.”
This isn’t the first time that China has done some soul-searching about familial love — last year ChinaDaily asked a cross-section of people if they said “I love you” to their parents, spouses, and children.“I have never said ‘I love you’ to my family, and I don’t think I will do it in the future,” one 56-year-old told the paper.“Saying it aloud is embarrassing for me.”
Still, that doesn’t mean that love can’t be expressed. In a separate article, ChinaDaily spoke to Zhao Mengmeng, a 31-year-old woman who said she had never told her father she loved him face to face ( “I find it a bit odd” ). Sometimes actions speak louder than words. Zhao gave her father a photo album featuring photographs of them together on almost every one of her birthdays in June 2012. The pictures went viral online, being forwarded hundreds of thousands of times on Weibo.
“I didn’t sleep the night I heard about it,” her father told ChinaDaily after the story attracted mainstream attention.“I have now memorised some of the comments on the collection of pictures.”
28.What can we infer from the text?
A.It is not direct for Chinese families to say “I love you”.
B.Chinese parents are too proud to express “I love you”.
C.Chinese parents are good at expressing positive emotions.
D.Young parents in China are willing to express “I love you”.
29.Why don’t Chinese parents express “I love you” to their children?
A.Because they can’t express it.
B.Because they are not in the habit of expressing so.
C.Because they think it unnecessary.
D.Because they think it should be done only among young couples.
30.Zhao Mengmeng expressed “I love you” to her father by .
A.giving him an album containing their photos
B.kissing her father’s face and telling him by words
C.speaking it out bravely in a TV programme
D.writing out the three words in a letter
31.What’s the author’s attitude towards the statements about “I love you”?
A.Opposed. B.Objective.
C.Critical. D.Indifferent.

Bemidji high school senior Jaxon Anderson is a shy teenager who wants to be everyone’s hero. When he puts on the mask, however, Anderson becomes the Amazing Spider-Man.
And when you’re Spider-Man, the traditional senior photo shoot just isn’t going to cut it. Anderson didn’t want cheap backgrounds or dark lighting, so he went for a movie set-style photo shoot as Spider-Man in downtown Bemidji, Minnesota in the US.
“I was struggling with what to do for senior photos and knew this would make me stand out and help me be myself,” Anderson said.“I love superheroes. I guess I’m just really geeky in that way.”
Spider-Man’s pictures are just the latest in a trend that some people are calling “extreme (极端的) senior portraits”.“Everyone wants to do something outside of the box,” said Megan Engeseth of Megan Engeseth Photography, a studio (工作室) that is known for its creative senior portraits.“It’s a totally different thing even from five years ago.”
High school seniors no longer want to graduate with a regular yearbook picture. While most still take a traditional headshot for Mum and Dad, they want the rest of their photos to reflect their true personalities. And they want the photo shoot experience to make them feel like a famous person—or a superhero—for a day.
The goal for many seniors—especially the girls—is to end up with an impressive set of pictures to be shared and liked on social media. With millions of pictures on the Internet, the bar is high.
“You see these incredible photos everywhere on the Internet, and you want something really unique and different from everyone else,” said Mady Johnston, a senior at St. Croix Central High School in Hammond, Wisconsin in the US.
Photographers are taking notes of these new expectations and are trying hard to create unforgettable moments for students. Minneapolis photographer Lisa Slotsve lay in the snow to take pictures of a skier’s jumps and went hiking at Taylors Falls to photograph a hiker.
“This generation realises that the perfect lives that surround them on social media are not real,” Engeseth said.“Instead of being the kid who leans (倚靠) against the tree, they want something that will truly show them and still stand out.”
32.What is the text mainly about?
A.Anderson’s unique senior portraits.
B.The trend of “extreme senior portraits”.
C.The success of a photography studio.
D.The influence of social media on seniors’ yearbooks.
33.The underlined phrase “cut it” in paragraph 2 probably means “ ”.
A.be satisfactory B.be unacceptable
C.save money D.be easy to deal with
34.Creative senior portrait shoots are becoming popular mainly because .
A.seniors believe they could make them famous on social media
B.they are easier and cheaper than traditional senior photo shoots
C.seniors want to set themselves apart from others
D.seniors want to show an unknown side of themselves to others
35.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Boys seem to be more interested in extreme senior portraits than girls.
B.Traditional headshots have been considered old-fashioned since a decade ago.
C.Even if seniors want their senior portraits to be impressive, they still want them to be true to themselves.
D.The most impressive senior photos are those that show a student’s perfect life.

AMOTHER’SDAYSURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m.The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

M: What kind of books are you interested in?
W: I am interested in books about animals, science, music, and so on, but I like books on literature most.
(Text2)
W: I’m going to the supermarket. Do you want me to buy something for you?
M: A toothbrush, a towel and some cookies. Oh, forget it. I will do it myself after watching this TV programme.
(Text3)
M: Lily, what is your brother doing now? Is he surfing the Internet or sleeping?
W: He is preparing his speech.
(Text4)
W: Hello, David. Long time no see. I want to quit my job because it is boring and the salary is very low.
M: Well, I can recommend you to my manager as he also graduated from our school.
(Text5)
W: It is good to sit in the fourth row. We can enjoy the performance very well from there.
M: You’re right. It’s better than the second or third row.
(Text6)
M: When do you need to use this computer?
W: As soon as possible. There are some documents I need for tomorrow’s meeting. So how long do you think it’ll take to fix it?
M: It’s hard to say. Sometimes we can find the problem right away and sometimes it may take two or three hours.
W: Should I wait or come back later?
M: As you like. But it’s probably better for you to come back later.
W: Well, when will it be ready?
M: Well, we should have it ready for you by five, but you’d better call us before you come.
W: Okay. Thanks a lot.
(Text7)
W: There seems to be something wrong with my record. It says I have twenty-five vacation days, but I know I have at least forty.
M: That’s impossible. You can’t have forty vacation days. The most anyone can have is twenty-five.
W: But I haven’t taken more than ten days off in the past two years.
M: In January we got a notice. If you had more than twenty-five vacation days, you had to take them before June 30th, or you would lose them. So I guess that’s what happened to you.
W: But I earned those days. It’s really not fair to me.
M: You know, it’s the rule. You can’t be against it.
W: OK. I see.
(Text8)
W: Wait, Ben! Did you say you had a party on Saturday?
M: Yeah. You didn’t know about it? It was my birthday.
W: No, I didn’t.
M: Oh, I invited you. I sent you an email last week. You didn’t appear at the party and I thought you forgot it.
W: Are you sure? I didn’t get it. Oh, you know what? I didn’t tell you I have a new email address. Oh, I am sorry.
M: That’s OK, but I was kind of upset that you weren’t there.
W: Really? I was upset, too, and the bike trip was just awful. Listen! I know it’s too late to buy a birthday gift. How about going out for dinner this week?
M: OK. That’s really nice of you. So, anyway, I have to go now. I have a meeting at 9:30.
W: Oh, I have to meet a customer at ten. See you later, and happy birthday.
(Text9)
M: You mentioned that you are a fan of live music. I guess I don’t have to tell you about the concert on campus on Saturday. It’s supposed to be the best show of the year.
W: I know. I wish I could be there, but I’ve already promised Professor Jones that I’d have all of the papers graded by Monday. I’m afraid I’m going to be stuck in my dorm all weekend.
M: Why did you offer to do that? Did you forget about the concert, or do you really need the money?
W: Actually, I really need to concentrate on studies this year. If I want to get into the education programme, I will have to prove that I am serious about being responsible. I don’t work for the money. Often I don’t get paid much considering all of the hours I put in.
M: Well, it’s a pity that you’re going to miss the concert.
W: Yes. I can’t help feeling a bit jealous. Sometimes I wish I were still in my first year of studies.
M: Well, I’ll be busy with my painting contest on Monday, so I’ll tell you all about the concert on Tuesday.
W: OK.

M:In 2011, a man named Gjorgi Selkov watched a video that changed his life. He was at home browsing the Internet. Then he came across the official video for Earth Hour. He was shocked by the idea that millions of people around the world could unite for the same purpose—that by turning off their lights for one hour, they could show they cared. He immediately thought his country of Macedonia should be a part of the event. But people and media companies throughout the country had never even heard of Earth Hour, let alone participated in it. So Selkov started sending the video to TV stations and websites. Eventually the media began writing articles about Earth Hour. They wanted to call on people to join the movement and be a part of climate action. The following year, the Earth Hour Global team took notice of Selkov’s actions, and asked him to become the Earth Hour country manager for Macedonia. He happily accepted. With a new title, Selkov aimed at not only promoting Earth Hour, but also arranging events and activities throughout the country. He wanted to raise public awareness about climate change. It took a while, but eventually the government build a park as a landmark to Earth Hour in his country.

第一节
Dear Jack,
I’m glad to receive your letter, where you show great interest in the cultural festival to be held on the World Food Day in our city centre.
On that day, first, people can see an exhibition, where many thought-provoking pictures will be displayed. Then, a lecture about saving food will be given by a famous agricultural expert. After the lecture, there will be an interesting quiz, and the winner will get a mysterious gift.
Through the cultural festival, I think more people will realise the importance of saving food.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
