Everyone has heard the phrase,“giving up is not an option”.Many disregard it and do not believe in it.But this small yet effective phrase gives a strong message. There will always be something that interrupts or causes inconvenience in the journey to achieve the dreams. But that should not drive one away from the path that they are on. Fitting the context perfectly is the story of Ian William.
Popularly known as the “Social Golfer”, Ian William is an accountant, lecturer, author, and a former golf player. He dreamed of playing golf at childhood. He would often observe players playing from a distance. He worked hard and changed his financial limitations. Then he began practicing in various golf matches. Due to his devotion and love for the sport, he picked up the techniques quickly and soon began playing as a professional. He also dreamed of participating in the Senior Golf Tour in the coming year.
However, in 1996, Ian was diagnosed with a tumor(肿瘤) in the left part of his brain, which affected his hearing from the right side and damaged his balance nerve. He underwent two surgeries in 1997 with a smile and a hope to be cured. Although the surgeries were successful, Ian caught meningitis(脑膜炎) while recovering from it. Apart from being hopeful and optimistic, there was no other way Ian could cope with the situation.
Just as things had begun to normalize, in 2006, Ian’s body was affected by a major stroke(中风). This stroke numbed the left side of his body. His life-long dream of participating in a golf tournament could not be fulfilled anymore.
Ian took his time to recover and came back even stronger. He wanted to inspire millions with his journey and decided to share his experiences through a book. Ian has now published his 3rd book StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears.

“Tortillas (玉米粉圆饼).” The small wooden sign nailed onto a dead tree grabs my attention. I’m very wet from a rainstorm and I’m also starving.
Our local friends have dropped us off at this village. They won’t be back for several hours. We’ve walked up and down the village many times, slow steps helping us while away the time. With one hour left before we meet up with our friends, the promise of tortillas lifts my spirits.
Following a dirt path, we wind deeper into this village. We are now a mile from the heart of the village and the homes are farther and farther apart.“Do you really think there are tortillas at the end of this road? Or are we walking into a trap in which our kidneys(肾)will be harvested?” I nervously joke to my husband. His laughter calms my fears.
Hearing the laughter, a cow looks out of one of the doorways and moos (哞哞地叫) a warning to its owner. A multigenerational family is sitting on the dirt floor of the home; their heads turn to watch us go by.
I wave to the family as I pass by. An old woman waves back. Deciding we are not a threat, the other family members lose interest and turn away.
I’m about to give up on the thought of a warm tortilla when I spot another small sign in front of a small wooden house. A short woman is in the yard feeding three tiny piglets. In Spanish, my husband asks her about the tortillas. The woman shakes her head, not understanding his Spanish. So he falls back on the international language of gestures, miming(模仿) the act of making tortillas. Her eyes light up in understanding.
“Sylviaaaaaaaaaa!” she screams. A small girl, no older than 8, comes running from behind the house. Her mother explains, and Sylvia gets to work.
Back on the dirt path, I take my first bite. My taste buds (味蕾) dance with pleasure. Before we regain the main road, I decide that it would be a shame not to return for more. Despite the heavy rain that has picked up again, my husband agrees. We make our way back to Sylvia’s house.

I had only swum in open water a few times, and always in gentle lakes, so I wasn’t prepared for how rough Lake Windermere appeared on a cold day. A swimmer told me the water felt colder than it had been measured, and that the water was a bit rough. But I, along with 10, 000 others, was about to complete the challenge.
Most of the people taking part were doing a one-mile race, and 10 races were planned over the weekend. There seemed to be a mix of open-water enthusiasts alongside complete beginners—which is precisely the aim of the swims, to get as many people as possible completing their own challenge. The oldest woman competing was 77, taking part in the two-mile race, alongside a man who last year had swum in every one-mile race.
I had chosen the third one-mile race of the day. There were over 600 people in my race. We were taken through an acclimatisation area, a children’s paddling pool-sized part of the lake where we moved in to feel how cold the water was.“Not too bad” was everyone’s thought! Then we headed out towards the middle of the lake.
We’d been warned that the first 100 metres would be really rough. However, somewhere near the 750 m mark I was still waiting for the calm;it felt more like swimming in the sea than a lake. I tried to focus on my breathing and technique, and just keep going. As I approached the 400m-to-go mark my lower right leg became painful. I recalled overhearing people talking about how they kept swimming through the pain, so I tried. But it didn’t work. I began to feel the entire leg tight and painful. I didn’t want to stop, so I bent my right knee and just kicked with the left leg.
Finally I saw the finishing post, and I just concentrated on getting there—still one-legged. My finishing time was 38 minutes 25 seconds but that didn’t matter—the atmosphere was fantastic and everyone felt a sense of achievement, whatever their time. I’m hooked, and want to give it another go. I’ve already signed up for my next open-water swim.
32.How did the author feel before the race?
A.Scared of the most challenging race.
    B.Disappointed by the difficult conditions.
C.Concerned about the other swimmers in the race.
D.Determined to be as tough as the people around her.
33.Why does the author mention the two people in paragraph 2?
A.To stress the importance of the race.
    B.To praise the experienced swimmers.
C.To show the wide range of the participants.
D.To introduce the various events of the race.
34.The author suggests in paragraph 4 that .
A.the race would cause breathing problems
B.the race became harder than she had expected
C.it was really necessary to prepare for tough swims
D.it would have been easier if she had taken others’ advice
35.What does the author talk about in the last paragraph?
A.Her confidence in her own ability.
B.Her pride in having swum so quickly.
C.Her eagerness to repeat the experience.
D.Her surprise at having managed to finish.

According to a review of evidence in a medical journal, runners live three years 56. (long) than non-runners. You don’t have to run fast or for long 57. (see) the benefit. You may drink, smoke, be overweight and still reduce your risk of 58. (die) early by running.
While running regularly can’t make you live forever, the review says it 59. (be) more effective at lengthening life 60. walking, cycling or swimming. Two of the authors of the review also made a study published in 2014 61. showed a mere five to 10 minutes a day of running reduced the risk of heart disease and early deaths from all 62. The best exercise is one that you enjoy and will do. But otherwise ... it’s probably running. To avoid knee pain, you can run on soft surfaces, do exercises to 63. (strength) your leg muscles(肌肉), avoid hills and get good running shoes. Running is cheap, easy and it’s always 64. (energy). If you are time poor, you need run for only half the time to get the same benefits as other sports, so perhaps we should all give 65. a try.

It was Mother’s Day and I was shopping at the local supermarket with my son who is five years old, Tenyson. As we were leaving after finishing our shopping, we realised that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground badly. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Fortunately, a lot of people stopped to help out.
While we were walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very worried about what had happened to the elderly couple. He said to me,“Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.” Seeing that there was a flower stall(摊位) at the front of the supermarket, he added,“Why shouldn’t we buy the lady a flower? It will make her feel better.” I was amazed that he’d come up with this sweet idea. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted.“Just take it,” she replied.“I can’t take your money for such a wonderful deed.”
By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great horror, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman’s husband and I told him it was from my son. At that, the old man started crying and said,“Thank you very much.” He then turned to me,“You have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”
The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son bent down his body to the injured lady and tenderly said,“Happy Mother’s Day to you, too.”

    附:听力原文
    (Text1)
M: I prefer rock music to classical music. It makes me feel excited whenever I listen to it. What about you?
W: I enjoy nearly all kinds of music, especially country music.
    (Text2)
W: Oh! My flight will take off in half an hour. Could you please drive a bit faster, sir?
M: OK. Actually, you don’t need to worry. We’ll reach the airport in five minutes.
    (Text3)
W: I went to the lecture yesterday. It was fantastic, right?
M: Well, the topic was interesting, but I couldn’t follow it completely.
    (Text4)
W: Mr Smith, here is your coffee.
M: Thanks, Alice. By the way, remember to cancel my appointment with my dentist tomorrow.
    W: OK.
    (Text5)
M: Lisa, how about playing tennis this afternoon?
W: I’d love to, but I have to go to a store to buy a present for my friend as tomorrow is her birthday.
M: What a pity! Maybe another time.
    (Text6)
M: Is this one beside you your English teacher? She looks strict.
W: Yes. But her teaching is very well organised and clear. We all like her very much.
M: Who is this girl wearing glasses with dark hair?
W: Oh, she’s my best friend. Our class went on a spring outing to the seaside last month and we took it.
    (Text7)
M: What was that ear-splitting scream?
W: Oh, that little girl over there has just lost her temper.
M: I hope she’s okay. She looks miserable.
W: She’s fine. She’s just frustrated because she didn’t get what she wanted. If parents didn’t give in every time their children wanted something, children wouldn’t behave like that.
M: I don’t know. When my son was little, and didn’t know how to tell us what he needed, he would start kicking and screaming.
W: Well, I don’t think that’s the case here. Look at those parents. They’re going to buy the girl some candy to calm her down. That’s just rewarding her for her misbehaviour.
    (Text8)
W: Excuse me. Do you need any help, sir?
M: I want to go to the Science Museum, but I’ve been lost for the past few hours, and I don’t know how to use these ticket machines at all.
W: Ah, well, just press this button. It’s two dollars.
    M: Okay.
W: Your train is at platform 3.
M: All right. How often do the trains come around this time of day?
W: Usually they come about every five minutes.
M: Okay. And where do I get off?
W: Get off at the State Street station, four stops from here.
M: I got it. Thanks for your help.
W: It’s my pleasure. Good luck.
    (Text9)
W: Hi, Elliot. What are you doing tonight? We’re going to see the Transformers film.
M: Oh, that would be great but I can’t.
W: But why? We’ve finished our exams.
M: I’m not studying for exams tonight. You know my company?
    W: No, I don’t know what you’re talking about.
M: I’ve started an Internet company and I sell books and CDs online. I’ll be busy tonight.
W: Anyway, what about Saturday and Sunday? We’re going to spend the weekend at the seaside.
M: I’m flying to Rome tomorrow.
    W: No!
M: I’m meeting a designer there at 10:30 on Saturday.
W: Well, come on Sunday then.
M: My flight leaves Rome at 11 p.m.on Saturday and it arrives in London at 1 a.m.I won’t get much sleep on Saturday night so I expect I’ll be asleep all day on Sunday.
W: OK then. Don’t worry about your friends. I’m sure your company is more interesting.
M: Don’t be angry. Look, I’ve got half an hour free. At least we can have a coffee now.
    (Text10)
W: I took part in a really interesting project called A Clean-up Day this summer. Its aim is to clear the world’s rubbish. I got the information about it from my neighbour. I thought it would be fun and persuaded a couple of my cousins and friends to come along. Most of the people there were teenagers. We were a very international group in my team. Over half of the people there were from Australia, like me, but there were also people from China, Thailand and the USA. Most teams were working on the south coast and the west coast of the country, but mine was working on the east. We had to pick up all the rubbish that we could find on the seaside. I’m determined now to get my family to recycle as much as possible. It’ll be worth it if we can make our seas safer for all those beautiful sea animals. So if you’d like to join in this day next year, remember to sign up now. The focus on that day will be on getting rubbish out of rivers. Welcome to take part in it!
