When I was at school, our teacher often said,“You are what you eat.” She wanted us to eat the right food to be healthy.
Japanese people are said to be the healthiest in the world. They eat rice and fish and vegetables every day. They drink green tea or water when they’re thirsty, and snack on dried fish, fruit or nuts. So we can believe that you become what you eat. When you know the advantages or different kinds of food, you can use your knowledge well and eat what you want to become. Have you ever heard any of the following advice?
*Lettuce or milk can make you sleepy while peanuts or dried fish will stop that feeling.
*To keep your teeth clean, you should eat apples often.
    *Garlic(大蒜) helps to prevent colds.
Future restaurants might be named after what they hope to create(创造). Let’s take the restaurant “Winners” as an example. Its menu would list dishes specifically designed to help you win sports games. There would be rich tomato sauce(调味汁) full of vitamin C and soft vegetables. All this would have a little fresh cheese on the top—just enough to help you get a good night’s sleep.
What will happen to junk food in the future? If ice cream is not good for children, can’t we give them fat-free, sugar-free tofu ice cream? We are told dried fruit is a healthier snack than biscuits, so some biscuit companies are making biscuits with more vitamins. So in the future, you might be able to eat your way to health!
    21. What’s the best title for this passage?
    A.Food in the Future
    B.You Are What You Eat
    C.How to Keep Healthy
    D.Food in Japan
    22. The Japanese are very healthy mainly because .
    A.they eat many vegetables
    B.they have a healthy diet
    C.they know much about food
D.they know how to cook nice food
    23. We learn from the passage that .
    A.“Winners” only provides vegetable dishes
B.eating apples is good for our teeth
C.there will be no ice cream in the future
D.people prefer biscuits to dried fruit
    B
    (2020·天津)
“They tell me that you’d like to make a statue(塑像) of me—is that correct, Miss Vinnie Ream?”
The deep, gentle voice helped calm the nervous girl. Asking a favour of the President of the United States was no casual matter, especially for a seventeen-year-old girl.
“Yes, sir,” she replied, her dark eyes meeting his.“I wouldn’t have dared to ask you, but my teacher, Mr Mills, says I am ready. I plan to make it in an admirable manner.”
President Lincoln smiled.“Painters, sculptors—they’ve all tried to make the best of this ordinary face, but I’m afraid there’s not much hope. What did you have in mind, Miss Ream? A bust(半身像)?”
Before Vinnie could say yes, the President hurried on, a shade of apology in his voice.“Of course—I shouldn’t have asked. A full-length pose would be much too big a project for a young woman your size.”
Vinnie’s face turned red. She realised she looked like a child, with her tiny figure.“Small does not mean weak, sir,” she defended herself.“I was born in the country of Wisconsin. I’ve driven teams of horses and carried water. Making a full-length clay(黏土) figure would not exhaust my strength—and that is what I intend to do!”
The President’s eyes brightened at her show of spirit.“Sorry, madam, I have underestimated you as I didn’t know your background.”
But his smile faded as he rubbed his beard with bony fingers, in thought.“Miss Ream,” he sighed,“I’d like to let you do it, but as you know, we are in the middle of a war. How could I possibly take the time to pose for a sculpture now? I hardly have a minute to myself.”
Vinnie glanced around and noted the size of his office.“I work quickly,” she said. Her voice was soft but confident as she pointed to the corner near the windows.“If I were to bring my clay here and work for three hours every afternoon, I could complete most of the project while you are at your desk.”
The President seemed to consider her idea seriously. He got up and shook Vinnie’s hand warmly,“I’ve heard that you are a talented young woman, and I have found you charming and intelligent as well. I cannot make my decision immediately, but you will hear from me soon.”
The very next day, Vinnie received an invitation from the President.
24.What gave Vinnie confidence to make her request of President Lincoln?
    A.Her aggressive personality.
    B.Mr Mills’s encouraging remark.
    C.President Lincoln’s gentle voice.
D.Her interest in a challenging job.
25.How did President Lincoln first respond to Vinnie’s request?
    A.Pleased. B.Thrilled.
    C.Regretful. D.Doubtful.
26.Vinnie confirmed her ability to make a full-length statue by highlighting .

    B.Experience helps to promote excellence.
C.Ups and downs make one strong.

    C
Crime fighters could have a new tool at hand. Researchers have developed a cutting-edge technique to identify human hair. Their test is quicker than DNA analysis techniques currently used by law enforcement.
DNA testing is commonly used for identification because DNA is unique to each individual(个体). However, environmental and chemical processes can degrade DNA, limiting its usefulness over time. Protein(蛋白质) in hair, on the other hand, is more stable than DNA but can also have variations(变体) that may be unique to the individual.
“Our analysis process can be used universally,” says Ms Huang.“One of our samples(样本) even included dyed hair and the test was 100 percent accurate. The test was able to distinguish East Asians, Caucasians and South Asians.”
Dr Beauchemin says she has got in touch with law enforcement agencies about using the new technology. She is also planning to collect more hair samples and continue her research with a goal of finding where exactly in the world the hair sample is from, to look for more races and determine specific age.
“We are in a very similar place with protein-based identification to where DNA testing was during the early days of its development,” said chemist Brad Hart.“This method will be a game-changer, and while we’ve made a lot of progress toward improving it, there are steps to go before this new technique is able to reach its full potential.”
28.What’s the main purpose of the text?
    A.To analyse crime scenes.
    B.To distinguish different races.
C.To show the usefulness of DNA testing.
D.To introduce a new identification method.
29.Which will be the most useful in identifying a person according to Brad Hart?
    A.Chemical materials.
    B.Protein in hair.
    C.DNA variations.
    D.Blood samples.
30.What’s the advantage of the protein-based identification over DNA testing?
    A.Stability. B.Popularity.
    C.Security. D.Convenience.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the text?
A.DNA testing will soon reach its full potential.
B.Protein-based identification remains to be improved.
C.Protein-based identification has replaced DNA testing.
D.DNA testing develops as rapidly as protein-based identification.
    D
The best and most-commonly used sources for the pills we have are oily fish like salmon(鲑鱼), mackerel(鲭鱼) and sardine(沙丁鱼). Many environmentalists fear that some species are being overfished for this purpose. We may have an endless voracity for fish oil, but we don’t have an endless supply of fish.
Menhaden(鲱鱼), which is described as “a big-headed, smelly, foot-long fish”, is in great danger. Although prized for dinner in the 18th century, the species has become the unknown victim of the fish oil business, which presents us with potential seafish. Menhaden feeds almost entirely on algae(海藻) and is especially good at changing it into omega-3 fatty acids, which make it a good target for fish oil companies.
One particular company, Protein of Houston, has been fishing 90 percent of the country’s menhaden. It’s become such a big problem that 13 of the 15 Atlantic states have banned the company’s boats from their waters. Yet the company is still allowed to fish in North Carolina and Virginia, as well as federal waters; the company’s efforts result in the removing of half a billion menhadens every year.
Aside from a public natural resource running out for a company’s private profit, the damage to the ecosystem is the cause for alarm. The muddy brown colour of the Long Island Sound is the direct result of lacking water filtration(过滤)—a job that was once done by menhaden.
Menhaden keeps the ocean waters of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts clean. A menhaden filters four to six gallons of water of algae in a minute, which prevents underwater dead zones.
Measures should be taken to avoid the overfished situation. Plant seeds such as flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and sesame seeds—and particularly their oils—are good vegetarian sources of omega-3 fatty acids, although the mix of specific acids is different from which one can get from fish.
32.Why does menhaden become a good fish for companies to make pills?
A.It is good at forming omega-3 fatty acids.
B.It feeds mainly on the harmful algae.
C.It is well-known for its rich protein.
D.It is relatively easy for companies to catch.
33.What does the underlined word “voracity” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A.Trouble. B.Shortage.
    C.Resource. D.Appetite.
34.What does the author intend to suggest us in the last paragraph?
A.To grow more plants for their seeds to make oil.
B.To use some substitutes instead of more fish oil.
C.To call on the government to make laws in fishing.
D.To take part in more activities to protect the environment.
35.What is the best title for the text?
    A.The Broken Natural Ecosystem
B.The Process of Making Fish Oil
C.Bad Effects of Fish Oil Making
    D.How to Use Natural Resources

    NeedaHomeworkHelper?
As a parent, you want your kids to do their best in school. You already know plenty of sleep, healthy food and some school supplies are necessary. 36 Here are some tips from educators and professionals for helping your children with it—both at home and on school campus.
    Keepitordered.
Organisation is the key to success, because it can maximise efficiency. 37 For example, they could use a scheduling application to manage projects with arranged dates, or they might stick to an old-fashioned pen and a paper planner. See what works best for them and go from there.
    Breakprojectsdown.
38 Teach them to break larger projects down into smaller pieces. Often people get frightened by the difficulty of tasks without understanding that the large task is actually just made up of smaller ones. Another solution is to use a project proposal to help keep them organised and on track with homework and projects.
     39
One mistake students usually make is postponing unpleasant work and deliberately looking for distraction(使人分心的事). Teach your children that the workload isn’t going to get smaller if they wait longer, and, as a result, it will only become larger and seem more difficult to get started.
    Gethelponline.
There are a growing number of online references and homework resources. Not only will your children be better prepared for class the next day, but they’ll also learn a valuable lesson about how to research and find information online. 40
    A.Focus on homework.
    B.Avoid delaying tasks.
C.Online applications are becoming more and more popular.
D.Many children get stressed out when they have big assignments due.
E.Have your kids keep ahead of their homework with an organised system.
F.From them you can also find ideas for educational activities you can do with your children.
G.However, what else do children need to be successful without a professional homework helper?

One time, the teachers at a school wanted to teach the students about airplanes. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this.
Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. Every student would design a paper airplane. They would stand in a line in the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win.
When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the school sports team, said to everyone else that his airplane would win.“I am the strongest,” Paul said.“So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”
However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian realised what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack(叠) of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.
The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a loud yell, he threw the airplane into the sky. It went farther than every other airplane. Everyone cheered.
    Finally, itwasBrian’sturn.

W: No. The price of doubles is from 270 to 330 dollars.
M: Oh, I see. And can I get an extra bed if we need one?
W: Certainly. An extra bed is 45 dollars.
M: OK, that’s fine. Thank you very much.
    (Text8)
M: Hi, Tina. I’m going to Isabel’s. Are you coming?
W: No. The things there are too expensive for me. I can’t afford them.
M: Don’t worry. Isabel’s is having a clearance sale, and today is the last day.
W: Really? That’s wonderful. Can you wait a second? I need to get dressed.
M: All right, but hurry up.
W: Should we ask Judy to go with us? She saw an evening dress made of silk there last month which she liked very much.
M: She has already bought that evening dress.
    W: When?
M: Yesterday. She wore that dress last night, and showed off to everybody at our teacher Mrs Black’s wedding party.
W: Oh! That isn’t like her.
M: Hurry up, will you? We’ll have to go to a gas station first. We’d better be there before lunch.
W: All right, all right. I’m ready now. Let’s go.
    (Text9)
M: What sports do you do, Jenny?
W: I go skating every Saturday. I practise for hours.
M: I like skating, but I can’t do well. I’m wondering if you can teach me skating this Saturday.
W: No problem. We can meet by the lake. What sports can you do well, Clark?
M: I can run very fast. I often go swimming. I love cycling, too.
    W: I can’t swim fast. And I haven’t got a bike, so I never go cycling.
M: Do you want to go cycling now? You can use my sister’s bike.
W: Oh, that’s great! But I can’t go right now. I’ve got homework. Can we go at 1:30?
M: Er, I will be practising on the piano at that time. Maybe half an hour later is good for me.
W: OK. Let’s say... meet at the park?
M: That’s not a good idea. You know, I can’t go to the park with two bikes!
W: Oh! Of course not. So I’ll go to your house first.
    M: Sounds good.
    (Text10)
M: Thank you very much. Thank you, Dr Johnson. Well, it is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I want to tell you today is this: Education is important. When I came to the US, I was only thinking about being a carpenter, but I could not read the newspaper. And I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So I entered the city college to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you are 15 years old in my country, you finish school and then you learn a trade. And that’s exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old, I learnt how to be a carpenter. A year later, I came to America. Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes and history classes and I became a full-time college student. And today when I look back, I’m so happy because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden, I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I learnt when I started my own business, which is doing really well.

    写作
    第一节
    Dear fellow students,
As a student, everyone has the responsibility to create a civilised campus. Here is what we students should do on campus.
First of all, it is important to obey class regulations and school rules, which are there to make sure we behave properly. Second, we should mind our manners. If we are friendly and polite, we can live in harmony with others. More importantly, we need to show concern about others and give a helping hand when necessary.
Now let’s start and do a little bit every day, every hour, and every minute! We will be able to create a campus that is full of love and civilisation.
    Students’ Union
    第二节
Finally, itwasBrian’sturn. Brian took the airplane that he had picked up the day before. He walked up to the line and, with all his strength, he threw the plane. It went flying, farther and farther, until finally it landed —10 feet past Paul’s plane! The whole school cheered. Brian won the contest. Mr Moose gave him a prize: a toy airplane.
Brianwonbecausehetriedoutmanysolutionstotheproblemofhowtomakeanairplaneflyveryfar. He did this by testing out many different designs and comparing the results. When he found the design that worked best—the paper airplane that flew the farthest—he used it. Because Brian tried a lot of designs, he was able to make up for his lack of strength and beat Paul.
