Seth dropped his schoolbag and headed straight for the fridge. He needed a good snack if he was going to stay up late to watch the super perigee moon. He didn’t care about the moon, but Mr. Andrews assigned (布置作业) a project and expected him to do all that work in one night.
“Hungry?” Mom asked.
“Not really, but I have to eat something. Mr. Andrews is making me watch the moon tonight and write up information on it.”
“Oh, that’s right. Tonight is the super perigee moon.” Mom smiled. “What a fun assignment.”
Fun? Was she crazy? “I don’t think staying up late to stare (凝视) at the moon sounds like fun at all.”
Mom laughed. “You just wait. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it more than you think you will.”
Seth didn’t think so. Mr. Andrews told the class that the super perigee moon appears when the full or new moon is the closest to the Earth. They spent an entire class talking about how big the moon usually looks. Seth didn’t see why this was such a big deal.
When the sun set, Seth walked outside. “That’s strange,” he said to his dad, “It’s so bright out here.”
“The super perigee moon is about 30% brighter than usual,” Dad said. “When I was younger, Grandpa used to study astronomy. He taught me all about space. The super perigee moon was always one of my favorite things to look at.”
Seth stared at the moon. Not only was it bright, it was huge—bigger than any full moon he’d ever seen.
“About 40% larger than usual,” Dad said.
Seth opened the notebook and started to write down the information his dad told him. “Think I should take pictures for the assignment?”
“Why not? It’s a good idea. It would get you good marks.”
“And I’d like to have pictures to remember this. It’s pretty cool.”
“So I guess you’re not too upset that you have to do the homework after all,” Dad said.

We’ve all been in conversations where we’ve known that the other person wasn’t really paying attention. According to the University of Missouri, 45% of communication is listening, and yet most people remember only 25% to 50% of the information they hear. Whether you’re in a classroom, a business setting, or a relationship, failing to hear 75% what’s said to you is sure to lead to big problems. Active listening helps solve them.
What is Active Listening?
It means more than listening to the words that are said. Instead, you think about what you hear, and try to find out the purpose, content, and emotion from the speaker. Active listening requires paying attention. If you’re watching TV or looking at your phone while someone is talking, you’re not actively listening.
The other side of active listening is making sure the other person knows that you’re doing so. Signs like eye contact and replying with insightful(有深刻见解的)comments are important.
Why Active Listening Matters
Verbal(言语的)communication is very important in every part of life. Active listening can help you communicate better, reduce misunderstandings, and build more successful family or working relationships.
For example, family members often have bad listening habits. They don’t pay attention to what is said because they think they know what is coming next. They hear what they expect to hear, instead of what family members actually say. Active listening makes it possible to solve this problem.
Learning How to Listen
Active listening takes practice. Here are a few tips on improving your listening skills:
Pay attention! Put down your phone and make eye contact with the person talking to you. Make notes in mind about the speaker’s main point, as well as a few specific things they’re saying. Why are they telling you this? How does the speaker feel about what they’re saying? Don’t think about answering. Focus on what they want you to hear.
Show that you’re listening. The speaker can tell if you’re paying attention. Make eye contact, nod when you need to, and give small verbal comments like “yes” and “huh”. But don’t repeat something they’ve just said. This might seem like a good way to show that you’re listening, but it can derail(使脱轨)the conversation.
Offer feedback(反馈). When the opportunity comes up, you’ll be able to offer insightful feedback on what was said. This might take the form of reflecting on what was said, asking follow-up questions, of offering your own viewpoint. Active listening can avoid that deer-in-the-headlights feeling that can happen when someone asks, “What do you think?” If you’ve been actively listening, you’ll be ready to answer thoughtfully.
35. According to the passage, which one can he active listening?
A. Asking some questions before listening.
B. Listening to someone while watching TV.
C. Thinking about what you hear while listening.
D. Guessing what the speaker will say before listening.
36. Active listening is important because ______.
A. it changes people’s listening habits completely
B. it helps people to communicate with others better
C. it makes communication important in every part of life
D. It ensures people don’t make mistakes in business settings
37. What can we know from the passage?
A. Nodding often in the conversation can help you listen actively.
B. Asking follow-up questions is not as good as offering points of view.
C. Repeating what’s said by the speaker means you are an active listener.
D. Paying attention in the conversation means more than just listening to the words.
38 The underlined word “deer-in-the-headlights” probably means ______.
A. Not being able to see B. not being able to understand
C. not knowing how to react D. not knowing how to listen

六、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共 10分,每小题2分)
Companies Work to Develop Paper Bottles
① Several large companies have begun creating paper bottles to replace (替代) glass and plastic ones. To sell liquids (液体), companies must use plastic or glass bottles for their packaging. But as customers now care more about the environment, many companies have begun working to develop paper bottles.
② Paper bottles have many advantages. Perhaps the most important is that they are easy to recycle (回收). Paper bottles also weigh less than glass or plastic, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move around.
③ A company called Paboco (which stands for Paper Bottle Company) has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. The companies are creating their own bottle designs, but they’re sharing what they learn to speed up the development of paper bottle technology.
④ Clearly, one of the biggest difficulties is keeping a paper bottle from leaking (漏).The inside of the bottle needs a special coating. To make sure the liquid doesn’t leak through, many companies are using a thin sheet of plastic as a liner (内衬). Bottle makers may say this liner can be recycled, but many recycling programs don’t have the right machines to handle these liners.
⑤ A company named Diageo has made the first paper bottle that’s completely plastic-free. Instead of a plastic liner, a non-plastic coating will be put on the inside of the bottles. This should make the bottle fully recyclable. Diageo says they’ll use the bottle with their liquids in 2021.
⑥ But even without the plastic, paper bottles aren’t perfect, Trees need to be cut down to make the bottles. That could lead to the loss of forests, harming animals that depend on the forests.
⑦ There’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace glass or plastic. Companies will need to see how long liquids can be stored in the bottles, and make sure the bottles don’t affect the taste.
⑧ But now so many companies are working toward the same goal. It’s likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.

二、(共8分,每小题2分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Should People Become Cyborgs?
① In the marvel comics and movies, billionaire Tony Stark wears a red and gold suit and becomes Iron Man. The suit provides superhuman strength, protection against most attacks, the power of flight, and much more.
② Iron Man is just a story. But robotic suits are not. Engineers call them exoskeletons (外骨骼). They don’t look as cool as Tony Stark’s suits. They typically look like a backpack. But they have changed the lives of many people with injuries or illnesses that affect movement. A disease had paralyzed(使瘫痪) Stacey Kozel and she could not walk anymore. But in 2016, she used an exoskeleton to go hiking. Also, people who do tiring or repetitive jobs, like moving heavy boxes in a warehouse, sometimes use exoskeletons to lessen the load(减轻负荷).
③ You can probably think of a time when you wished you could lift more, jump higher, or run faster. Today’s exoskeletons are expensive. They need to be charged(充电) regularly and can usually help people to do only one type of movement (for example, lifting or walking). But in the future, things might be different.
④ Brendan Quinlivan works on exoskeletons at Harvard University. He says that five years in the future, a hard exoskeleton could really help you. He says it might allow you to flip over a car or pick up a big tree trunk. You could become a lot like Iron Man.
⑤ That would be cool. But some people worry that the technology could divide humanity. In 2008, new swimsuits helped swimmers go faster than ever before. But swimmers couldn’t compete fairly without the latest suit technology. So the International Swimming Federation banned(禁用)the suits. People who can afford exoskeletons will be stronger and faster than those who cannot. They’d be able to work faster and achieve more than those without suits. We could end up with two classes of humanity: the superhumans and everybody else. That wouldn’t be fair.
⑥ But life already isn’t fair. Plenty of people have advantages over others thanks to their wealth, heath, or strength. Right now, exoskeletons are helping to even the playing field for people with disabilities. That’s a great thing. Also, people could use their unfair advantage to help or protect others. For example, rescue workers could move heavy debris (碎片).
⑦ What do you think? If we ever have Iron Man suits, will they harm or benefit humanity? What would you use an Iron Man suit for?
55. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Exoskeletons push labor workers to move heavy boxes.
B. The idea of creating exoskeletons comes from Iron Man.
C. The price of future exoskeletons is likely to be even higher.
D. Exoskeletons can help disabled people to stand up and walk.
56. The writer mentions “swimsuits” to show _________.
A. the new technology could help swimmers go faster
B. every swimmer needs the latest suit to compete fairly
C. the new technology could make the competition unfair
D. banning the new swimsuits is a right decision to make
57. What is the main idea of Paragraph 6?
A. Exoskeletons will do good to people.
B. Exoskeletons can be used to protect people.
C. Exoskeletons will stop unfairness in our society,
D. Exoskeletons won’t divide people into two classes.
58. By writing this passage, the writer wants to ________.
A. show us the unfairness in the society
B. predict what future technology is to be like
