A report in a newspaper says that school accidents, such as food poisoning, fires, electricity and traffic, kill more primary and middle school students than anything else. So we must learn how to protect ourselves better. Here are some tips for keeping safety in mind every day.

On our way home or to school: Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right before we cross the road. We’d better wear bright-color clothes, so the drivers can see us easily. Don’t believe strange people in the street.

At school: When students around us begin to push each other, we need to stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If we fall down in a moving crowd, use both hands to cover the head. Lean to one side, curl up our body and bend the legs.

In a fire: Stay calm. Leave the classroom quickly under the directions of the teachers. Smoke can be more dangerous than fire, so use a piece of cloth to cover our mouth and nose. What will we do if the clothes burn? Remember not to run! Drop and fall to the ground. Then roll! It will make the fire go out.

For eating: Wash fruits carefully before eating them. Check the expiration dates on the packages of the snacks, and if it looks or smells bad, don’t eat it.

Primary and junior high school students will get new versions of textbooks this fall term.

The biggest changes will take place in Chinese textbooks. The primary goal is to include more traditional Chinese culture. For example, ideas on the hundreds of schools of thought will be introduced to students. There will also be more classical Chinese poems and essays. The percentage of traditional culture in the new textbooks will be raised to 30 percent for primary school students and 40 percent for junior high school students. Meanwhile, about 15 percent of the content will be taken out in order to make students have less work.

The Language and Culture Press will publish the new Chinese textbooks. It makes one of the main versions of the present textbooks in China. First, the new books will be given to more than 4 million students in the first and seventh grades across the country starting this fall, and then they will be given to other grades.

Also, politics textbooks will get new names. Primary school politics textbooks were called “morality and life”, and those for junior high schools were called "ideology and morality”. This year, the names of all politics textbooks for the first and seventh grades will change to "morality and law”.

It's the first time the word "law" will be included in the names of textbooks since 1949. "We need to let kids know that laws protect them as well as how they do that," said Li Xiaodong, sociology professor at Beijing Normal University.
