Sweat rolled off my forehead as my younger brother and I sat under the tree .
"Hi,Jason, " said my brother ,Chad. "Do you hear the train? " I listened, but I heard only thunder in the distance. It was still miles away, but I heard it. It grew stronger and louder as it gained speed and got closer .How .could that be?I wondered .
We were about to grab our bikes to see what it actually was when we stopped. What looked like a flock of birds darkened the sky overhead. When I looked at it closer,I realized it wasn't birds. It was a tornado (龙卷风) .The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as the air turned green and heavy. The sun disappeared. The wind strengthened and roared.I grabbed Chad's arm and pulled him toward the house .I tried to open the door, but it was as if an invisible force pushed against me. The door refused to open. When we finally managed to get inside,we found it was as dark as night. Our family had practiced a tornado safety plan many times. But I had never imagined that it would be just Chad and me at home the first time we needed to use it.
"Inside the closet!"I yelled. It was small and crowded, but we got in it anyway. Chad began to cry. "It's going to be all right. "I told him. But I was worried about Mom. I hope she'd found a safe place to wait out the storm.
The storm continued. I heard a thud on the roof. I felt the whole house shaking. Then it was quiet.I opened the door and we inched our way out of the closet. Rain had got in through the open window and wet the carpets. A kitchen Window had shattered, its screen blown away.I looked at the backyard. The tree was uprooted, and broken branches lay on the ground .
"Jason, I can't get service, " Chad said as he held the phone in his hand. We had no electricity, either. I glanced at the wall clock. Had it been only 20 minutes since we'd first heard the thunder? Then I heard footsteps toward the house .Mom had made it home safely. "Boys!" she yelled. "Are you all right?
We ran out and hugged her. The sun came out,and this time it shone bright and clear .

Traveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of circumstances, which is why when Sophie Murphy boarded a recent flight from Sydney to Melbourne and noticed an awful tension" in the cabin, she first thought it was caused by typical bad-tempered passengers. But as the flight neared its end, it became obvious that something was very wrong.
A teenage boy with Down syndrome(唐氏综合症)who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat, regardless of the cabin crew's warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land. The pilot was forced to circle above the airport, delaying the landing- and angering people on the already tense flight.
"If it was a cartoon, " remembered Murphy, "there would have been smoke coming out of people's ears."
As the boy's elderly parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, but in vain, Murphy,42一 -who had been a teacher for more than 20 years- stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.

I decided to ski to the North Pole. It was after I saw an advertisement in a newspaper looking for people to join a team to ski 350 miles to the North Pole. Back in 1996, there had never been a woman from the UK who had accomplished this challenge. I wondered what it would be like to survive in temperatures cold enough to freeze your flesh in seconds, so I sent off for the application form.
The application form full of pictures of male explorers arrived. The words “Are you man enough for the ultimate(极限的) challenge?” made me angry and even more determined to get on the team.
Over 500 individuals applied for a place in the team, and the selection process included physical and psychological tests designed to pick the best group. In one test, there was a huge rope ladder we had to climb, and I froze at the top because I had a fear of heights. I thought my hopes were fading as most other applicants sailed past, leaving me behind. But two others helped me out, and later I found out that the organizers were not looking for amazing individuals, but great team players, and this moment had shown them who would take care of others in the team.
I had revealed(显示)my weakness, and in a place like the Arctic, you have to be yourself, as there is nowhere to hide. These personalities of asking for help and showing weaknesses are necessary for women to master.
I realized that by being myself, I could succeed. I was selected for the team. I realized that I could achieve more than I ever imagined—more importantly, by sharing my story with others, I could inspire them to take a step into the unknown.

In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.
1. What made Mr Bissell return to Uzbekistan?
A. His friends' invitation.
B. His interest in the country.
C. His love for teaching.
D. His desire to regain health.
2. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A Developing a serious mental disease.
B. Taking a guided tour in Central Asia.
C. Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan.
D. Writing an article about the Aral Sea.
3. Which of the following best describes Mr Bissell's road trip in Uzbekistan?
A. Romantic. B. Eventful. C. Pleasant. D. Dangerous.
4. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a book.
B. To explain a cultural phenomenon.
C. To remember a writer.
D. To recommend a travel destination.
A few years later, still attracted to the country. he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Ara Sea”可知,几年后,Bissell仍然被这个国家所吸引。
A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea(几年后,仍然被这个国家所吸引。
And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.”
故选A。

Jenifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. “The Great Good Place” is a short story by American novelist Henry James, first published in 1900. Its theme is that people need a place where they can escape the grind of daily life. This is an idea that Howard Schultz, who turned the Starbucks coffee chain into an international giant, used in his business strategy.
Born in 1952, Schultz grew up in Brooklyn. After university, he worked for a firm supplying coffee-making equipment. Shortly after working there, Schultz noticed that a company in Seattle was buying a surprisingly large amount of the firm's equipment, and he decided to investigate. It turned out to be a simple coffee-bean store, but its owners were committed to teaching the public to appreciate good coffee.
This store in Seattle opened in 1971 and took its name from Starbuck, a sailor in the classic novel Moby Dick. Its logo was a two-tailed mermaid. Fascinated by its owners' commitment to coffee, Schultz joined Starbucks. Later, on a trip to Europe, he was impressed by the way that street cafés in Italy were both meeting points and places to drink espresso. This was something American didn't have yet.
In 1985, Schultz started his own coffee-bar business, which soon became a success. Two years later, he got together with some other investors and bought Starbucks for US $ 3. 8 million. Its theme is that people need a place where they can escape the”(“伟大的好地方”是美国小说家Henry James写的短篇故事,首次发表于1900年。 A. boredom乏味,厌倦;B. flavor风味;C. virtue优点;D. intervention介入。故选A。

He used clever tricks, such as selling coffee in “short”, “tall ”and “grande” size rather than the usual small, medium, and large. Customers learned to pronounce unfamiliar Italian names like latte and macchiato. Schultz actually created a market that hadn't existed before.(1985年,Schultz开始了自己的咖啡馆生意,并很快取得了成功。 Schultz创造了一个前所未有的市场)”以及第五段中“Within 20 years, Schultz had taken coffee culture from the streets of Europe to almost every city in developed countries.
根据第一段中“This is an idea that Howard Schultz, who turned the Starbucks coffee chain into an international giant, used in his business strategy.(这是把星巴克咖啡连锁店打造成国际巨头的Howard Schultz在他的商业战略中运用的理念)”结合文章整体叙写了Howard Schultz是如何将星巴克咖啡连锁店打造成一家商业巨头的过程。
