Most heroes are not super. They don't appear in comic books, on television, or in movies. They just do w hat they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them.
Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He's a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.
About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they're taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing. clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike's owner and arranged to meet him- supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief,”You've got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here; or you can just get out of here." You can imagine what the thief did.
After that first success, Bike Batman developed a safer routine.
When he sees questionable bike ads on craigslist, he cross- references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index. Once he has confirmed it with the owner, he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested. In one case, Bike Batman even helped a family recover a wide range of prized possessions that suspects had stolen during a home burglary.
His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called "RobinHood". Since he wasn't exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, "Batman”seemed a better fit. The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle' s reputation as a friendly city.

When I was about 4 years old, I decided to go to Disney World. For most young kids, it’s a normal request, but I had cerebral palsy(脑瘫). Walking into anywhere, let alone a crowded place like Disney World was, to put it lightly, a tall order. Luckily, I had people in my corner to help me. Over the next three years, I worked with physical doctors, acquired a walker, and practiced walking, standing, and balance—all the skills that I would need to turn my goal into a reality.
I remember the feeling when my legs would protest doing any more work. Despite this, everyone else told me I could do it, so I kept it up. It was all because of people like my parents, brothers, teachers, and doctors that I was able to grow so much, both physically and mentally, with them constantly pushing me to “walk on”, yet encouraging me whenever I needed it.
On June 9, 2008, as I stood in the tunnel leading into Main Street, my dad asked me if I wanted any help. I instantly replied “No!” and situated myself facing the end of the tunnel, feet planted firmly, heart most likely beating out of my chest. Then I went, walking ever so slowly at first, then gradually speeding up. Step, step, step, step, bump. Holding fast onto the handlebars, I gathered up all my strength, picked up my walker and straightened out, picking up my pace once again. It wasn’t too long before the cheering increased because I had made it to the end, where my mom was waiting with tears in her eyes and arms open wide ready to hug her son and tell him how proud she was.
Looking back on that experience, I realize something pretty thoughtful. Every once in a while, life will throw a few bumps in the road. Though it may set you back for a bit, don’t let it stop you. Pick yourself back up and finish. It’s worth it. Besides, there just might be someone there cheering you on along the way.

In 2011, Nancy Ballard went for a routine check-up that turned into something extraordinary. In fact, she was carrying a painting of a plant she’d done when she arrived at her doctor’s San Francisco office. “It would be great if we had artworks like that for our chemotherapy (化疗) rooms,” the nurse said. Ballard asked to see one.
She was shocked by what she found. The walls were dull and bare, and the paint was chipping(剥落). It was a depressing room for a depressing routine—patients were restricted to chemo drips for perhaps several hours, often with nothing to look at other than those sad walls. Ballard didn’t have cancer herself, but she could sympathize with the patients. “I couldn’t imagine how anyone could even think about getting healthy in a room like that,” she says. As it happened, Ballard’s physician, Stephen Hufford, was ill with cancer himself, so finding time to decorate the rooms was low on his to-do list. So Ballard made it her mission to brighten up the place.
She started by e-mailing 20 local designers. “I wrote, ‘You don’t know me. But my heart hurts after seeing these rooms,’” she remembers. She then asked whether they would donate their time and money to transforming just one of Dr. Hufford’s rooms each.
As it happened, six of them wrote back almost immediately. Six rooms got new paint, light fixtures, artworks, and furniture. Dr. Hufford was delighted. “All the patients feel relieved of the pain because of it,” he said. He even noted that his own tone of voice was different in the rooms and that he was better able to connect with his patients.
Ballard was so encouraged by the patients’ reactions that she created a non-profit, Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo, to raise money and decorate more spaces. Since then, she has worked on 20 projects, including one in Pennsylvania. “We were in Philadelphia for a ribbon-cutting, and a woman was there on her third battle with cancer,” says Ballard. “When she saw what we’d done, she said, ‘I’m gonna beat it this time. I thought I wasn’t going to, but now I know I’m gonna beat it.’”

A.Her sympathy for cancer patients.

A.More hospitals will be built.

By the time Robert Porter Allen was born in 1905, the whooping crane(鸣鹤)was already in trouble. The beautiful bird was once commonly found across North America. By 1941, the whooping crane population had dwindled to the double digits. The tallest species in North America was critically endangered.
In the 1940s, the remaining cranes migrated(迁徙) every year from the Gulf Coast of Texas to somewhere in the north of Canada to breed(繁殖). The conservation community didn’t know where the birds went. The wetlands where they used to spend winters were growing rarer and rarer as the tiny, non-migrating group of whooping cranes was alive in Louisiana in 1941, but the group had disappeared by the time Allen started his research.
In 1942, Allen undertook the whooping crane project over the next three years. He did almost constant field work that took him from Texas up the cranes’ migration route to Nebraska, and on into Saskatchewan in search of the nesting ground of the birds.
Studying the bird in its breeding habitat and seeing how many birds were born would allow conservationists to understand how to help the birds on their journey. But finding the whooping crane’s nesting site meant difficult and fruitless air searches over northern Canada.
In 1952, Allen wrote a report on the whooping crane. The report was a warning call to the conservation community:only 33 migratory “whoopers” remained, and their nesting site still hadn’t been found. Two years later, the whooping cranes’ breeding grounds in Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park were finally found, and Allen headed north to study them first-hand—an “incredibly difficult journey”, in Sprunt’s words. Allen’s work laid the groundwork for conservationists to save the birds.
Their efforts paid off as the numbers reached 57 by 1970 and 214 by 2005. Today, the whooping crane is still listed as endangered, but there are roughly 600 birds alive.
1.What is the passage mainly about?
A.It is a story about Allen’s searching for a lost bird.
B.It is a story about the cranes’ long migration flight.
C.It is a story about the crane surviving the winters.
D.It is a story about conserving the whooping crane.
2.What does the underlined word “dwindled” mean in the first paragraph?
A.Increased. B.Reduced. C.Stayed. D.Limited.
3.According to the passage, which of the following is mainly responsible for what happened to the remaining whooping cranes?
A.Habitat loss. B.Illegal hunting.
C.Natural disasters. D.Deadly diseases.
4.Which of the following events took place in 1954?
A.The non-migrating group of whooping cranes disappeared.

The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter, I couldn’t wait to get her to school. I, as a mother, was tired of the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slowed language development.
As I accompanied her into the car, I felt desperate. Nothing was right with our world. She’d been born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession. My job and my house had been victims. Then this happened. My child’s language delay was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her. I felt like we both needed to be rescued.
I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with the little girl I loved as when I left. Walking slowly toward the school’s playground gate, I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me.
“You should have seen her today!”His breathy words were supported by excitement. I didn’t interrupt. “See that climber,” He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall. I nodded. “Well, every day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top.” He took a breath. “And today she did it!”
He expressed his joy just as he’d witnessed her conquering Mount Everest!“She cheered and celebrated! I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me. My daughter had conquered her mountain.
As she ran toward me, I recognized something I hadn’t before. I saw her perseverance(毅力). I saw her strength. I saw a hero.

Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In times of extreme weather conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult.Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn’t find shelter for the night.
Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 30,2018,34-year-old Candice Payne,a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous conditions.
“It was -20℃,and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,” said Payne.Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street.
For Payne, her mission was personal.According to Payne, her husband,Carlos Callahan, had lived on the streets at one point in his life.Based on his experiences,Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help and that if she didn’t step up to help,no one likely would.
However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do,many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn’t want homeless people to stay in their rooms.“No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn,was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said Payne.
Payne’s selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it for attention.“I am a regular person,” said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help complete strangers.“It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side.”

A.A Black Fighter Changes the World
B.A Woman’s Curiosity Brings a Reward

参考答案
1.D 词义猜测题。根据第一段中的“Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn’t find shelter for the night.”
根据倒数第二段中的“...but one hotel, the Amber Inn,was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms”可知,Candice Payne是通过买下琥珀宾馆的房间的方式来帮助那些无家可归者的,故D项正确。
3.A 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“According to Payne, her husband,Carlos Callahan, had lived on the streets at one point in his life.Based on his experiences,Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help”可知,Payne的丈夫曾有过露宿街头的经历,这让Payne了解无家可归者急需帮助,所以决定帮助他们,故A项正确。
4.C 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要讲述了一个普通的芝加哥妇女买下宾馆的房间让无家可归者过夜,以免他们被冻死,故C项“A Regular Woman Makes a Difference”最适合作文章标题。

As a first responder, you never know what type of situation you might walk into,or who you’ll meet along the way. That’s definitely been the case for Jeffrey Lanenberg,a 51-year-old paramedic(急救医务人员) since 1984.
Ten years into the job,Lanenberg received a call that reported that a man in his early 30s had fallen down in the Mall of America. When Lanenberg and his partner arrived at the scene, they found the young male face down on the ground. He had gone unconscious, making weak attempts to breathe. His wife stood beside him holding their small son in horror. They quickly rushed to defibrillate(除颤) and calm the man to keep him under control. After Lanenberg dropped the patient off at the neighboring hospital,he thought about the man and his family for a long time.
Lanenberg thought he had experienced everything under the sun until one random visit to Office Max three years ago, where he met a man repeatedly walk back and forth while staring at him.As it turned out,the man was the patient he had saved 20 years earlier.
“You gave me 20 years more than I ever thought I’d have,” the man said.He thanked Lanenberg repeatedly and told him he had someone he wanted him to meet.He stepped around the corner and reappeared with a 20-something-year-old man.Lanenberg instantly knew that it was the son he had seen standing by his mother all those years ago.
“That day changed my life,” Lanenberg said.“Before that, everything was about work...When I talk to my beginner-training class,I tell them you never know the impact you can have on someone’s life.”
1:What did Lanenberg do with the young man?
A.He gave the man the first aid.
B.He cured the man at the scene.
C.He only sent the man to hospital.
D.He took care of the man’s wife and son.
2:What did Lanenberg think of the encounter with the man?
A.It was unbelievable.
B.It was a common routine.
C.It was a matter of course.
D.It was a dangerous situation.
3:Why was the man thankful to Lanenberg?
A.Lanenberg helped bring up his little son.
B.Lanenberg donated to support his family.
C.Lanenberg gave him the present happy life.
D.Lanenberg taught his son to be a new doctor.
4:How did the meeting change Lanenberg’s life?
A.He changed his attitude to his job.
B.He was rewarded with much money.
C.He got a promotion to be a team leader.
D.He took up teaching work to train newcomers.
参考答案
1.A 细节理解题。根据第二段的“They quickly rushed to defibrillate(除颤)and calm the man to keep him under control.”可知,Lanenberg给那个年轻人做了除颤和镇静等急救措施。故选A项。
2.A 推理判断题。根据第三段的“Lanenberg thought he had experienced everything under the sun until one random visit to Office Max three years ago...As it turned out,the man was the patient he had saved 20 years earlier.”可知,Lanenberg认为与20年前救助过的病人偶遇是难以置信的。
3.C 细节理解题。根据第四段的“You gave me 20 years more than I ever thought I’d have”可知,那人说Lanenberg给了他比想象中多了20年的时间,也就是说他认为他现在的快乐生活是Lanenberg给他的。
4.A 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Before that,everything was about work...the impact you can have on someone’s life.”可知,在那之前一切都只是工作,与以前救助过的病人偶遇之后,Lanenberg告诉学生们你永远不会知道你对别人的生活会产生什么影响,由此可知这件事改变了Lanenberg对工作的态度。
