On ne f my trips t India, I saw children drinking water frm the radside. I was trubled t learn that millins f peple, mst f them children in develping cuntries, die each year because f waterrelated diseases.
Living in the US, I am lucky t be able t turn n the tap and get ptable water (饮用水), while ne sixth f the wrld's ppulatin lacks access t clean water. This year, I entered the Discvery Educatin 3M Yung Scientist Challenge. In late June, I learnt that I was selected as ne f the tp 10 natinal finalists f this famus middle schl science cmpetitin. Over the summer, I wrked with Dr Jim Jnza, my scientist mentr (导师) frm 3M, and develped a system that uses slar energy t purify water. My inventin is green and csteffective, and I am lking frward t implementing this in places that are affected by harmful water pllutin.
In Octber, my family and I flew t 3M headquarters in St Paul, Minnesta, where the final event was t be held. Fr the last challenge, each f us had t present the inventin we had been wrking n ver the summer. The first place winner wuld win $25,000, a trip t Csta Rica, and the title f America's Tp Yung Scientist. At the awards ceremny, all f us waited anxiusly until ne f the judges, Danny Frester, started annuncing “The winner f the Discvery Educatin 3M Yung Scientist Challenge is...” Yu culd hear a pin (大头针) drp as he pened the paper with the winner's name, “Deepika Kurup!”
As America's Tp Yung Scientist, I was given an pprtunity t shw my inventin n natinal televisin and deliver several presentatins. One f the mst imprtant things I have learnt is that cmmunicatin and teamwrk are key t success.

Accrding t the BBC, this is the mst casualties(伤亡)frm wildfires in the cuntry since 2009. The University f Sydney estimates that 480 millin animals have died in Suth Wales alne.
Zeke Hausfather, an energy systems analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather have made Australia mre susceptible_t fires and increased the length f the fire seasn. “The drier cnditins cmbined with recrd high temperatures in 2019 created main cnditins fr the disastrus fires. Australia's fires were wrsened by the cmbinatin f thse tw. 2019 was the perfect strm fr being the warmest year n recrd fr Australia and the driest year n recrd fr Australia,” Hausfather added n Friday.
Kevin Trenberth, a senir scientist at the US Natinal Center fr Atmspheric Research, said warmer cean temperatures are als cntributed t mre variable weather arund the wrld. Trenberth believes that glbal warming cntributed t energy imbalances and ht spts in the ceans, which can create a wave in the atmsphere that lcks weather patterns in places, causing lnger rain events in Indnesia, fr example, and at the same time cntributing t drught in Australia. He said that nce an area experiences drught cnditins fr tw mnths r mre, it increases the risk f fires catching and spreading. Thse changing weather patterns due t glbal warming make drught events lnger.
Climate experts stress that climate change is nt the nly factr in the severity f wildfires. Hw land is managed can als impact the amunt f fuel available fr fires. Practices like cntrlled burns and ther factrs can impact the risk t peple and prperty, such as warning systems and the type f develpment in a given area. Changing thse plicies has great ptential t limit future damage frm wildfires alng with changes t hw fire management resurces are dispatched(派遣).

[2021·盐城模拟]There are certain areas n Mars where we dn't dare tread. NASA frbids spacecraft frm visiting spts that pssibly hst liquid water, and s where life might be able t thrive, fr fear f cntaminating (感染) Mars with Earth micrbes. But an analysis f the salty liquids n Mars suggests we needn't wrry, because life as we knw it shuld be unable t exist anywhere n the planet's surface.
Edgard RiveraValentin at the Lunar and Planetary Institutein Texas and his clleagues used readings f the temperature and relative humidity acrss Mars t map the presence f salty water. Any water n the surface is likely t be salty, simply because the surface is. This bsts the chances f water being liquid because salt lwers its freezing pint.
It is like when yu thrw salt n an icy sidewalk, says Danielle Nuding at NASA's Jet Prpulsin Labratry in Califrnia. “It's the same chemistry happening.”
Unfrtunately, the saltier the water, the less likely anything can survive in it. The team fund that even thugh there culd be briny (盐分多的) water n the surface f Mars up t 18 per cent f the year, depending n the seasn, n micrbe we have ever seen n Earth wuld be able t reprduce there.
Life as we knw it is nt ging t find these brines and survive because it's either ging t be way t cld r way t salty,” says RiveraValentin, wh presented the results at the Lunar and Planetary Science Cnference in Texas.
That desn't mean we can't cntaminate Mars: brines with different types f salts mixed tgether might be friendlier t life and temperatures just belw the surface are much less extreme. Nevertheless, as lng as we dn't dig dwn, it might be highly unlikely r even impssible fr rvers (飞行器) such as Curisity t cntaminate Mars.
“The level f sterilizatin (杀菌) that we've dne with Curisity shuld be gd enugh t ignre the ban n visiting what we've been calling special regins until nw, says Jennifer Hanley at Lwell Observatry in Arizna. I think that we're OK t g. Visiting these regins wuld be particularly helpful because, while they are in thery the mst vulnerable areas n Mars, they are als the mst interesting.
Fr example, arguments have been raging fr ver a decade abut whether dark streaks n Martian slpes called recurring slpe lineae are flwing water r just dust. A quick visit by Curisity, which is near an area where the flws ften frm, culd slve it nce and fr all.
Even if areas with water are inhspitable t Earth life, they culd still be hme t native Martian life frms.
“If yu had life that riginated n Mars when it was mre habitable, it culd be that as Mars changed, life culd have gradually adapted t the new, mre extreme cnditins,” says RiveraValentin.
8.NASA frbids spacecraft frm visiting the special regins n Mars because ____________ .
A.life is unable t thrive there, thus there's n pint f visiting them
B.Martian life prbably exists there and might threaten human beings
C.they wrry Earth micrbes might survive there, thus cntaminating Mars
D.human beings knw nthing abut these areas and they are dangerus t us
9.Which f the fllwing statements is true?
A.Mars surface being salty prvides evidence that Mars hsts liquid water.
B.Earth life is unlikely t cntaminate Mars because the surface f the planet is either t cld r t salty.
C.The fear f cntaminating Mars is unnecessary because human beings wn't cntaminate Mars under any circumstances.
D.Jennifer Hanley thinks human beings shuld explre the special regins n Mars in rder t cnfirm the existence f Martian life.
10.What is the pint f visiting the special regins n Mars?
A.Martian life might be fund.
B.Liquid water might be fund.
C.Many puzzles abut Mars culd sn be slved.
D.N humans have ever visited thse regins befre.
11.In the passage, yu can find the answers t all the questins except ____________ .
A.whether the surface f Mars is salty r nt
B.whether any native Martian life frms exist
C.whether Earth life is able t survive n Mars r nt
D.whether the rver Curisity will cntaminate Mars

The lcatin fr this experiment was the Great Barrier Reef in the Cral Sea, fund alngside the east cast f Queensland, Australia. The site is nted t have the largest cral reef system in the wrld.
“Healthy cral reefs are remarkably nisy places—the crackle f snapping shrimp and the whps and grunts f fish. Yung fish cncentrate n these sunds when they're lking fr a place t settle,” said Steve Simpsn, study cauthr and a prfessr at the University f Exeter, UK.
By using ludspeakers t cpy such sunds, parts f dead cral reefs were fund t attract twice as many fish, cmpared t places where n sunds were played. “These returning fish, are crucial fr cral reefs t functin as healthy ecsystems. Bsting fish ppulatins in this way culd help t kickstart natural recvery prcesses, preventing the damage we're seeing n many cral reefs arund the wrld,” said lead authr, Tim Grdn.
