Across the world, language and history are connected. As society and tradition change, new words or phrases are created to show the present cultural understanding. Some old phrases and words simply turn into the accepted usages with their backgrounds forgotten.
One such phrase “grandfathered in” has become a common one now. Although it often makes people think of the image of a gray-haired, older gentleman, who gets out of trouble because of his age, it actually means that one person or a business has the right to refuse the new rules.
A deeper look into the first use of the phrase shows an interesting story in history. It happened in a town in the 1980s,a new law was passed there not to allow illiterates(文盲)to participate in the making of rules as they couldn’t read or write and might not help in the process. The limit was potent because except for the old and children, there were close to 30 percent of young adults in the town who had little or no education. Being strong and energetic, they made up an important part of the town’s development.
Considering that, some officers in the town didn’t readily accept the rule. Instead, they carefully gave their advice to the head of the town. At the same time, they encouraged these young adults to pass the literacy(读写能力)tests. Thus a “grandfather clause(条款)” was added to allow illiterates to participate as long as they or their grandfathers had once been participants. The clause no doubt helped remove the unfairness and benefited all.
The phrase “grandfathered in” is of course still widely used today without being limited to a certain field. But even as culture and tradition change, whether we’re aware of it or not, language has the power to hold our history.
56. According to Paragraph 1, what has happened to some old phrase with time going?

60. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

B. The birth of some phrases can be interesting.

People generally tend to pick out the best-looking fruits and vegetables when shopping for produce, but Canadian supermarket chain Loblaws is attracting customers with badly-shaped and faulty produce at the price of 30% lower than normal-looking ones.
A trial run of the ugly food line, named “Naturally Imperfect”, began with only apples and tomatoes to choose from. Consumer demand has been so huge that Loblaws is going to introduce more unsightly vegetables and fruit options like onions and mushrooms. The line is available at other stores, including Real Canadian Superstore and Your Independent Grocer.
All the produce that will be sold through Naturally Imperfect would otherwise have been used in juices, sauces, or soups, or have not been harvested at all. The director Dan Branson explained that this program benefited both food producers who would otherwise have to let abnormal harvest go to waste, and consumers who could buy fresh produce at low prices. And he was right, given how popular the line has become.
“It really went well beyond our expectation,” Branson said. “I think it really spoke to the fact that Canadians are out there really looking for some options.”
Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin deep, but they also recognize that they can get the same flavor and nutritional benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response to the initial offering of apples and potatoes showed the opportunity to expand the line and offer more options at a greater price to Canadian families.
“If you grow produce in your backyard, there will be a lot of produce that won’t look as pretty as what you will see in a grocery store, said Branson.” And nature doesn’t grow everything perfectly. I’d like to think if somebody were to take a No Name Naturally Imperfect apple, put right beside a No.1 apple, close their eyes and eat them, there would be no difference.”
61. Loblaws is different from other supermarkets in that .
A. more fruits are offered at lower prices
B. normal-looking produce is banned there
C. imperfect produce is sold at lower prices there
D. only apples and potatoes are sold every day
62. According to Paragraph 3, Branson’s program .
A. prevents people from wasting their food
B. happens to be a win-win arrangement
C. teaches food producers how to grow
D. enables consumers to eat more fresh produce
63. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The ugly food line B. The food to be wasted
C. The abnormal harvest D. All the produce
64. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Canadians are used to eating perfect produce.
B. Smart consumers know the importance of ugly produce.
C. Loblaws intends to improve customers’ quality of life.
D. Customers’ support promotes the development of Loblaws.
65. What do Branson’s words in the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. We should eat imperfect apples with our eyes closed.
B. The world is usually full of imperfect things.

Neil Shuttleworth, an 82-year-old English man, was hardly able to walk because of osteoarthritis(骨关节炎) in his right ankle. Problems began for Neil after he accidentally stepped into an unseen hole in a road surface while on holiday in Cyprus several years ago. Thankfully, he received an artificial ankle made from the materials of bulletproof(防弹的)vests.
Neil, who is a retired printing specialist from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, paid for the operation himself since it is not currently available on the National Health Service(NHS). When he finally chose to have the operation, he said it was because he had just one strong desire: to walk hand-in-hand with Christine, his wife of 34 years. “Actually, I wasn’t expecting to run a marathon. I would like to walk down the Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes with my wife, but without the pain I had lived with for far too long,” Neil said.
The operation uses polyethylene(聚乙烯) materials that are used to make bulletproof vests, but with extra added vitamin(维生素)E. Since the E-poly is made from strong plastic fibers, it is expected to last much longer than current replacements.
Before he was injured, Neil had always led an active lifestyle which involved running and cycling across the UK and Europe. After he stepped into the hole, which was several inches deep, he said he could not walk more than a few hundred yards as the pain in his ankle was so excruciating. Neil is now one of the first patients in the UK to have such an ankle replacement operation.
After wearing a special walker boot for six weeks following his operation, Neil received a strict six-week treatment that adopts special exercises. He is now able to walk a couple of miles, and he uses a running machine in order to build his fitness levels even further. “The results of Neil’s operation are impressive and there is at least an 80 to 90% chance the ankle replacement will survive for 10 to 15years,” said Professor Nick Harris, who performed the operation.
76. Why couldn’t Neil walk? (no more than 10 words)
77. What did Neil expect to do according to Paragraph 2? (no more than 10 words)
78. What does the underlined word probably mean in Paragraph 4? (1 word)

书面表达:
Hello, boys and girls,
I am Li Jin from Chenguang Middle School. The topic of my speech is “Let’s Ride Bicycles”.
As is known to us all, there is an increasing number of cars on roads. We can now drive to work, to go shopping, to visit friends and even to travel across the country. Though they bring about great convenience, cars also go hand in hand with air pollution as well as traffic jams.
How to solve these problems is a great challenge to everyone. My suggestion is that we should ride bicycles. There is no doubt that riding bicycles can surely do us good. Firstly, riding bicycles means using cars less, which is a good way to decrease traffic jams.
Secondly, riding bikes is environmentally friendly, that is, it doesn’t cause air pollution and is beneficial to our health. What’s more, bicycles are so handy and convenient that you can go wherever you like and do not need to look for a large parking lot.
Since there are so many advantages, why not join us and ride bicycles?
Thanks for listening!
