For many foreigners who have visited or worked in China, one of their strong impressions is that the country is very safe. Here, you can go out alone late at night to eat at a food stand without feeling nervous. You can also let your younger children ride public transport all by themselves without worrying about their safety.
This year, 2018, marks a special anniversary of the launching of the reform and openingup policy, which took place two score years ago in China. Over the past few decades, the country has achieved fast economic growth, while social peace and stability have been maintained (维护) to the fullest extent at the lowest cost. Of course, there are still unsolved problems. However, from the overall aspect, Chinese society remains harmonious and safe. In my eyes, this should be attributed (归于) largely to the cultural, economic and political environment of the country.
A society can be stable and orderly only when its people can lead a prosperous (繁荣的) life. After the introduction of the reform and openingup policy, China achieved fast economic growth and significant scientific and technological progress. In the meantime, the Chinese government has taken various measures such as those to fight corruption, reduce poverty and promote the rule of law, in order to uphold social equity. Thanks to these efforts, the potential factors that might cause social problems have been greatly reduced.
Apart from government departments including the police and judicial (司法的) departments, the general public also contributes much to social governance. The development of information technology has created new ways of linking the police and the public. By jointly fighting crimes in such ways, the public and the police have developed an everincreasing level of mutual trust and positive interaction.
The safety and stability in China did not come easily. Rather, it should be attributed to the efforts made by 1.3 billion people. For both Chinese and foreigners living in the country, the sense of safety and security is very precious.

The latest Global Hunger Index report estimates two billion people worldwide suffer from hidden hunger. People who suffer from hidden hunger have enough to eat, but the quality of their food is low. The report warns that food quality is just as important as quantity.
The report lists the countries by the percentage of the population who can’t have adequate intake of nutrition, children younger than five years old who weigh less than they should and the death rate of newborn babies. It says 10 of the 14 countries with the worst scores are located south of the Sahara Desert in Africa. More than 60 percent of people there are undernourished. The percentage has doubled in the past ten years and the expected life of people there has fallen by ten years since 1990. People suffer from food insecurity and high unemployment because of climate change and lack of rain in particular.
But the news was not all bad.The report says the number of children under age five who die in subSaharan Africa has dropped since 2000, probably because of a decrease in malaria (疟疾) rate. Vietnam’s score has dropped more than 75 percent since 1990. The number of underweight children in Vietnam has dropped sharply, and the number of children under five who die has been cut in half.
Eating lowquality food can hurt people as much as not getting enough food. Hidden hunger is very different from the socalled visible hunger. It means lack of micronutrient (微量元素) or vitamins in a person’s diet, which can cause longterm and great damage to their mental and physical health. And this is particularly severe for children. This kind of hunger can also weaken the immune system. It can also affect a person’s mind and even cause deaths.
The Global Hunger Index reports hidden hunger is happening even as levels of hunger in many developing countries decrease. People can be overweight but still suffer from hidden hunger. To keep fit, they should have a balanced diet and eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. It’s high time that countries all over the world should work together to bring an end to hidden hunger.
