School of Rock, a musical, is based on the 2003 American comedy film of the same name. The central message of the musical is about the power of music.
School of Rock tells the story of Dewey Finn. Dewey, played by Alex Brightman, is a rock singer and guitarist. His musical career hits_a_dead_end when he is kicked out of his band. Then he impersonates (假冒) his roommate to get a job as a teacher at a school. While in the classroom, he sees the musical talent in his students and inspires them to form a rock band.
“Music gave me power as I was a young kid,” said Alex. “It helped me think creatively.Music and the arts inspire kids to think differently.” Twelveyearold Brandon Niederauer, who plays Zack, the band’s lead guitarist, agrees. “No matter what language you speak,” he says, “everybody knows music.”
All of the actors play their own instruments during the performance. “If you say that you can do it, and you work hard enough, then you can do it,” says Evie Dolan, 11, who learned to play the bass guitar for the role of Katie. “I love that moment when the audience see the children pick up their instruments for the first time and really play, and find rock music for the first time,” says the musical’s director, Laurence Connor.
Tenyearold Bobbi MacKenzie, who plays Tomika, says that the experience of expressing herself through music is very wonderful. When asked what advice she has for kids who want to be musicians, she said, “If it’s really what you want to do, go for it. Work as hard as you can.”

I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for piano lessons in 2010. We were in the economic crisis. She said a polite“no”.
That didn’t stop me. I googled the measurements for a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one — keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, and then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.
One evening, when I was about 13, my mom said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I’d played for her. She was in shock.
My school didn’t offer music Alevel. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. But I had to pass a difficult test. Some of the questions involved an evaluation of the composer or when some piece was written. I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement, I was offered a place.
At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano.
When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. I feel proud: it’s been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I’m at one of the world’s leading music schools.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano — what we call mental practice. The paper piano helped arouse my curiosity about how music works, the building blocks that form the pieces.

How to protect your ears
You and your friends are leaving a concert on a Friday night. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard. __1__ So no harm done ... right?
Not quite. Temporary buzzing may be easy to ignore, but repeated exposure to loud noise will eventually cause serious — and irreversible (不能治愈的) — hearing loss. A new study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston shows that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 19 are experiencing slight hearing loss, and one in 20 have mild hearing loss. __2__ But the good news is that there are plenty of ways you can protect your ears from further damage — and still listen to the music you love.
Ask around.Put your earbuds in or your headphones on, and then ask a friend next to you whether or not he or she can hear what you’re listening to. __3__ Turn it down.
Buy noisecanceling headphones.A pair of earbuds or headphones that fits comfortably will limit outside noise so that you can hear your music better at lower volume.
Take breaks. __4__ So when listening to music, take your headphones off for 15 or 20 minutes and let your ears enjoy the quiet.
__5__ You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts — or while playing or practicing your own music — without changing the quality of the sound.
A.Use earplugs.
B.Keep the volume below 70 percent.
C.If the answer is yes, your music is too loud.
D.But by morning, your hearing is totally back to normal.
E.Like every other part of your body, your ears need rest.
F.Unfortunately, there’s no way to get back hearing you’ve already lost.
G.The exposure to noise is louder and longer than in any previous generation.
