When you want to go somewhere, you can easily find your way by using a map app on your smartphone. Your smartphone “knows” where you are and can tell you where to go.
This is possible with the help of satellite navigation(satnav) systems. A satnav system uses groups of satellites(卫星) to find out where people are, It sends information to a receiver, such as a smartphone. The more satellites a system has, the more accurate(精确的) it is.
On June 23, the last satellite of China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System was launched into space. Beidou, China’s own satnav system, was finally completed. It is one of four global navigation systems, along with US’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo.
On July 31, Beidou started providing full-scale global services(全面的全球服务). More than 120 countries and regions(地区) are now using Beidou services.
Since 2000, China has launched 59 Beidou satellites. Beidou can be used in areas that include farming, public services and business. It has a positioning(定位) accuracy of under 10 meters. This summer, people along the Yangtze River used Beidou-based device to monitor (监测) floodwaters in real-time with an accuracy of just a few centimeters.
Beidou also has a unique messaging ability. It allows people to send text messages up to 1,200 Chinese characters in length when mobile phone services are interrupted(中断) by natural disasters.
1. What does a satnav system do?
A. It helps people plan trips. B. It helps people find their way.
C. It lets people send text messages. D. It makes people’s phones smarter.
2. Beidou is the ______ global navigation system.
A. first B. second C. third D. fourth
3. What can we learn from the passage?

Years ago I worked at a factory in a small country. Every day I got up early and often did much extra work at night. I was so tired and exhausted(精疲力竭的). My whole life was hopeless. Then one day I read the following article from a magazine:
A woman went to live with her husband in camp on the Mojave Desert(沙漠) during the war. She simply hated the place: the heat was almost unbearable, 125 degrees in the shade, the wind always blew incessantly, and there was sand everywhere. Finally, in desperation(不顾一切地)she wrote to her parents in Ohio that she couldn’t stand it another minute and was coming home.
Quickly came the reply by airmail from her father—just two lines.
“Two men looked out from prison bars. One saw the mud(泥), the other saw stars.”
The daughter did some real thinking, not only with the intellect(思维) but also with her heart. She decided to stick to(坚持)her post.
She made friends with the natives, learnt to love the country, and eventually wrote a book about it.
The desert hadn’t changed, but her attitude(态 度) had. Because she listened with her heart to the words her father sent, a whole new world opened up to her.
A change of attitude could change everything.
After reading the article, I was deep in thought.
1. Where did a woman live with her husband?
A.In a big city. B. In a small country. C. On a farm. D. On a desert.

It was the end of June and school was finished.
“It seems like the end of everything, doesn’t it?” said Diana.
She started crying.
“Stop it or I’ll cry again. I don’t think I will pass this exam,” said Anne.
“Yes, you will. I want to go with you, Imagine how much fun it will be.”
“Yes, but I will have to study a lot. It was so nice of your Aunt Josephine to ask me to stay at her house,” said Anne.
“You’ll write to me, won’t you?” asked Diana.
Anne went to Aunt Josephine ‘s house on Monday.
On Wednesday Diana went to the post office. There was a letter from Anne.
Dear Diana,
It’s Tuesday night and I’m writing this from Aunt Josephine’s house. Last night I was really lonely in my room without you.
This morning I went to the Academy. There were lots of students. People were doing funny things before the exam. One boy was talking to himself.
Then we went into the exam. Some of the girls looked so relaxed. My heart was beating so quickly. Then we did the English exam. Diana, I felt like I did four years ago when I asked Marilla about staying at Green Gables. In the afternoon we had a history exam. I think I did OK. But Diana, tomorrow we have geometry. I am worried about that.
Yours,
Anne
The exams finished and Anne went home on Friday evening. She was very tired and happy. Diana was waiting.
“It’s wonderful to see you. Did you do well?” asked Diana.
“I think so, except with geometry. I don’t think I passed. It’s so good to be back. Green Gables is the best place in the world,” said Anne.
“When do you get the results?” asked Diana.
“In two weeks. They’ll be in the newspaper. Two weeks of waiting,” said Anne.
“You’ll pass. Don’t worry.”
“I want to pass with a high score or not at all,” said Anne. She seemed angry.
Diana understood that Anne wanted a high score than Gilbert.
Anne and Gilbert were in competition with each other. They saw each other but didn’t speak. It was like they were strangers. Anne secretly wished that she was friends with Gilbert again. But she also wanted to get a higher score than him in the exam. Everyone thought Gilbert was going to get the highest score. She wanted to make Matthew and Marilla proud. Well mostly Matthew.
The results were late. Finally after three weeks of waiting, they arrived. Diana came running to the house with a newspaper.
“Anne, you’ve passed. You and Gilbert. You’ re equal firsts,” said Diana.
Anne took the newspaper. Yes, their names were at the top of a list of two hundred pupils. Wow.
1. Who was Diana?
A. Anne’s mother. B. Anne’s aunt. C. Anne’s friend. D. Anne’s teacher.
2. How long did Anne stay in Aunt Josephine’s house?
A. Two days. B. Three days. C. Four days. D. Five days.
3. Why did Anne write the letter to Diana?
A. To express her thanks to Diana. B. To tell Diana about her exams.
C. To describe her life at Green Gables. D. To complain about her study at the Academy.
4. Which of the following is the right order of what happened in this passage?
a. The results were announced in the newspaper. b. Diana received a letter from Anne.

The Spanish returned from South America with many new types of food, including chocolate, chili and corn.
___4___ Sometimes they used them for different purposes from today. For example, carrots were used not as food but as medicine to protect people from poison or even to make people fall in love. The first tomatoes and pineapples were grown not as food but to make the garden look pretty,
