    A

Snow leopards (豹) are so hard to photograph that scientists arent even sure how many of these endangered animals still live in the wild.

The Snow Leopard Conservancy (SLC) set up 20 cameras in Russia in 2010 to learn more about the big cats. After a full six months, they had exactly zero picture! Thats when the organization understood they needed help. And the only people who could help them in finding the leopards were the very people from whom they wanted to protect the animals — local hunters (猎人).

Hunting snow leopards is against the law in Russia, but in the terrible climate of Siberia, the few people living there had to turn to poaching (盗猎) to feed their families.

In 2013, Russian naturalist Sergei Spitsyn approached Mergen Markov, a local hunter, and told him his project. Markov agreed to set up the camera where he knew he would find leopards, and it worked.

Markov, once a poacher, works full time for the conservationists now and has 10 cameras monitoring leopards. “I visit each camera once a month. I have known this whole region since I was a child,” he said proudly.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) began working with other local villagers in 2015. The village would be paid 40,000 rubles at the end of the year if the image of a snow leopard is caught. WWF also rents horses from the villagers so that they do not need to make money by poaching anymore. “Today there are far fewer leopard poachers but leopards still get caught in traps set for other animals, so I have to stay watchful,” said Markov.

Changing guns for cameras has made a big difference in the lives of these former poachers, the village, and the Russian snow leopards. The number of snow leopards has been rising and their population is expected to recover to normal levels within 10 years.

1.Why was no picture of snow leopards taken in six months?

A.SLCs 20 cameras failed to work properly.

B.The number of snow leopards in the wild was too small.

C.The local poachers destroyed these cameras on purpose.

D.The researchers knew little about the animals living habits.

2.What did Sergei Spitsyn persuade Markov to do?

    A.Find the poachers.

    B.Repair cameras in the forest.

    C.Catch more leopards.

    D.Work for SLC.

根据第四段内容以及下文 “Markov, once a poacher, works full time for the conservationists now and has 10 cameras monitoring leopards.”

3.Why did the WWF begin working with local villagers?

A.To get some pictures of snow leopards.

B.To help villagers make a living.

C.To prevent villagers from hunting animals.

D.To rent their horses at a low price.

根据倒数第二段中的“The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) began working with other local villagers in 2015. The village would be paid 40,000 rubles at the end of the year if the image of a snow leopard is caught.”

4.How can we describe the WWFs cooperation with the villagers?

    A.Practice makes perfect.

    B.Curiosity kills the cat.

C.Kill two birds with one stone.

    D.Old habits die hard.

    B

Over the past halfcentury, North America has lost more than a quarter of its entire bird population, or around 3 billion birds.

“We saw this great net loss across the entire bird community,” says Ken Rosenberg, a scientist in Ithaca, N.Y. “But we also knew that other bird populations were increasing. And what we didnt know is whether there was a net change.”

“Common birds with decreasing populations include darkeyed juncos and redwinged blackbirds,” says Rosenberg. “Grassland birds have suffered a 53% decrease, and more than a third of the shorebird population has been lost. Bird populations that have increased include raptors (猛禽), like the bald eagle, and waterfowl.”

“The numbers of ducks and geese are larger than theyve ever been, and thats not an accident,” says Rosenberg. Its because hunters who mainly want to see healthy waterfowl populations for sportful hunting have raised their voices.

“People are doing a wonderful effort to try and understand our bird populations with a lot of uncertainty, but the actual systems that we have in place to try and answer really tough questions like this are really far short of what we need,” Ted Simons in North Carolina State University says.

“In all, the conclusions werent necessarily surprising,” says Kristen Ruegg, a biologist at Colorado State University. There have been hints (暗示) that the loss was this large from all kinds of sources over the past few years. But in most cases, these were speciesspecific records of local extinctions or models of projected losses, resulting from things like climate change. This really sort of wakes people up to the idea that this is happening.

Elise Zipkin, a quantitative ecologist at Michigan State University, says the loss can be a big problem. “Just because a species hasnt gone extinct (灭绝) or isnt even necessarily close to extinction, it might still be in trouble,” she says. “We need to be thinking about conservation (保护) efforts for that.”

5.Which of the following becomes more than before?

    A.Darkeyed juncos.       B.The bald eagle.

    C.Grassland birds.   D.The shorebirds.

根据第三段中的“ Grassland birds have suffered a 53% decrease, and more than a third of the shorebird population has been lost. Bird populations that have increased include raptors (猛禽), like the bald eagle, and waterfowl.”

6.Why do duck and goose populations increase?

    A.To hunt for fun.

    B.To provide rich foods.

    C.To escape net loss.

    D.To keep people healthy.

根据第四段中的“Its because hunters who mainly want to see healthy waterfowl populations for sportful hunting have raised their voices.” 故选A项。

7.What can we infer from Elises words in the last paragraph?

A.Bird loss can be a big problem.

B.Climate change causes part of bird loss.

    C.Protecting birds is quite necessary.

D.What is happening is worth considering.

8.How does the author support the subject of the text?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By showing ideas.

    C.By explaining numbers.

    D.By providing research results.

Will there be an outbreak of bird flu that threatens humans? Many experts disagree on when or whether a human pandemic (大流行病) will occur, but do say there is a chance that the virus could mutate(变异), leading to widespread infection.  1  Heres what you need to know to help keep yourself healthy.

Stock up on food, water and household supplies. If there is a bird flu pandemic, youll want to minimize your chance of catching it by staying indoors; you might even be required to stay home if the government asks that people remain in quarantine (隔离期). Youd better stock up today on at least 2week worth of essentials such as water, food, emergency and medical supplies.  2

Have an outbreak plan. It may feel odd or uncomfortable to talk to family members and loved ones about the worstcase pandemic scenario. But if that scenario strikes, youll all be much better off if you have a plan decided on and ready.  3                 Figure out how you would care for them and what your first response and responsibilities would be; this is an especially important conversation to have with those with special care needs.

4 Things like keeping a balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient rest can help keep you healthy in an outbreak and also keep you from catching the common cold. Particularly in a flu outbreak situation, it will be important to wash our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Be diligent about covering coughs and sneezes with tissues.

Moreover, know your essential health information such as blood type, allergies, and past or current medical conditions. Make a list of that essential information for all the members of your family.  5  And do make sure everyone in your household knows where to find it.

A.Work out regularly to stay slim.

B.Pick up the habits of healthy behavior.

C.It is wise to keep it somewhere safe and visible.

D.Its important to ask yourself these questions before a pandemic occurs.

E.Talk with your friends and family about how youd respond to an epidemic.

F.In that case, the best thing you can do right now is to prepare for that possibility.

G.That will help you get through an extended time at home if an outbreak happens.

1.选F 根据空前的“Many experts disagree on when or whether a human pandemic (大流行病) will occur, but do say there is a chance that the virus could mutate (变异), leading to widespread infection.”和空后的“Heres what you need to know to help keep yourself healthy.” 该选项中的that possibility指的是前一句中的“there is a chance that the virus could mutate (变异), leading to widespread infection”。故选F项。

Youd better stock up today on at least 2week worth of essentials such as water, food, emergency and medical supplies可知,G项(如果流感爆发,这将帮助你在家度过较长的时间)能够承接上文。

3.选E 根据空前“But if that scenario strikes, youll all be much better off if you have a plan decided on and ready”和空后“Figure out how you would care for them and what your first response and responsibilities would be; this is an especially important conversation to have with those with special care needs.”

Things like keeping a balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient rest can help keep you healthy in an outbreak and also keep you from catching the common cold.

5.选C 根据空前“Make a list of that essential information for all the members of your family.”和空后“And do make sure everyone in your household knows where to find it.”
