    Starting out & Understanding ideas

    A

I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it.Mother sat writing letters.Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be a most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother.“But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry.I knew she loved me; she showed in action. But as a young girl, I wanted to have hearttoheart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us.I was “too emotional (易动感情的)”.But she lived “on the surface (表面)”.

As years passed and I had my own family.I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family.I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace — it seemed that nothing happened.I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to Mother.I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

But the present of her desk told me, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work.I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a onepaper letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter.

“In any way you choose, Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.”

    1.The passage shows that        .

A.Mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter

B.Mother was too serious about her daughter in words

C.Mother wrote to her daughter in careful words

D.Mother wrote to her daughter in careless words

I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a onepaper letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter. 故选A。

2.The underlined word “gulf” in the fourth paragraph means        .

A.deep understanding between the old and the young

B.different ideas between mother and daughter

C.free talks between mother and daughter

D.part of the sea going far in land

由第四段中画线词后的I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”.But she lived “on the surface (表面)”.

3.What did Mother do with her daughter's letter asking for forgiveness?

A.She had never received the letter.

B.For years, she often talked about the letter.

C.She didn't forgive her daughter at all in all her life.

D.She read the letter again and again before she died.

I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a onepaper letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter.

4.What's the best title for the passage?

    A.My Letter to Mother

    B.Mother and Children

    C.My Mother's Desk

    D.Talks between Mother and Me

I've loved my mother's desk以及文章倒数第二段的But the present of her desk told me ... that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work.

    B

One day when I was 5, my mother scolded (责骂) me for not finishing my rice and I got angry.I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. When angrily opening the screen door with my foot, I kicked back about a 12inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no remorse, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.

Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have scolded my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it.They never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a breach (裂缝) in the defense against unwanted insects.

For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would constantly make me think about my mistake. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it.For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing (嗡嗡) in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot.I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all.My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver.Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me.Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.

5.When the author damaged the door, his parents         .

    A.gave him a spanking

    B.left the door unrepaired

C.scolded him for what he had done

D.told him how expensive it was

6.The underlined word “remorse” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “        ”.

    A.regret        B.hurt

    C.feel   D.notice

When angrily opening the screen door with my foot, I kicked back about a 12inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. 故选A。

7.The experience may cause the author         .

A.to hide his anger away from others

B.not to go against his parents' will

C.to have a better control of himself

D.not to make mistakes in the future

8.What is the main idea of this text?

A.Adults should ignore their children's bad behavior.

B.Parents are the best teachers of their children.

C.What is the best way to become a more patient person.

D.Silent punishment may have a better effect on educating people.

    C

My sixyearold granddaughter stared at me as if she was seeing me for the first time.“Grandma, you are an antique (古董),” she said.“You are old.Antiques are old.You are my antique.”

I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there.I took out the Webster's Dictionary and read the definition to Jenny.I explained, “An antique is not only old, it's an object existing since or belonging to earlier times ...a work of art ...a piece of furniture.Antiques are treasured,” I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary.“They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. In order to qualify as an antique, the object has to be at least 100 years old.”

    “I'm only 67,” I reminded Jenny.

We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me.There was a desk that was handed down from Rone aunt to another and finally to our family.“It's very old,” I told Jenny.“I try to keep it polished and I show it off whenever I can.You do that with antiques.”

There was a picture on the wall bought at a garage sale.It was dated 1867.“Now that's an antique,” I said with pride.“Over 100 years old.” Of course it was marked up and scratched (刮坏) and not in very good condition.“Sometimes age does that,” I told Jenny.“But the marks are good marks. They show living, or being around. That's something to display with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become.” I believed this was important for my own selfworth.

Our tour of antiques continued. There was a vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time.I was not certain where it came from but I didn't buy it new.One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They'd been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They'd lasted through years and years. They could have been thrown away, or ignored, or destroyed, or lost. But instead, they survived.

For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful.“I don't have any antiques but you,” she said. Then her face brightened,“Could I take you to school for show and tell?”

“Only if I fit into your backpack,” I answered. And then Jenny's antique lifted her up and embraced her in a hug that would last through the years.

9.Why did Grandma read the definition of “antique” to Jenny?

A.To change Jenny's shallow understanding of antiques.

B.To list all the important characteristics of antiques.

C.To express her disappointment at being called “antique”.

D.To tell Jenny the importance of protecting antiques.

I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there.I took out the Webster's Dictionary and read the definition to Jenny. 故选A。

10.Which of the following information did grandma express to Jenny?

A.The desk reminded her of her dear relatives.

B.The marks on the picture showed its age and value.

C.There was usually a sad story behind each antique.

D.She planned to buy a new vase to replace the old one.

11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Jenny had a strong desire for grandma's love.

B.Jenny was too young to know grandma's humor.

C.Grandma had a deep longlasting love for Jenny.

D.Grandma was too old to lift Jenny up.

12.What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Grandma's Antique

    B.A Story of Antiques

    C.A Tour of Antiques

    D.Jenny's Antique

How to Be a Good Listener

Being a good listener can help you see the world through the eyes of others. It enriches your understanding and expands your capacity for empathy (同情).Good listening skills can provide you with a deeper level of understanding about someone's situation.  1

Place yourself in other people's shoes. It's easy to only consider the impact of the other person's “telling” on you.But you must open out and look at the problems from the other person's view.  2

Avoid comparing the person's experiences to your own.You may think that the best thing you can do to really listen is to compare the person's experiences to your own.But this type of thinking actually makes the person feel like you're not really listening at all.  3   That means that you're focusing more on yourself than on the person's situation.

4   Some people think that, when they're listening, they should find a quick and easy solution to the person's problem.According to the research, it is totally wrong to do so.Instead focus on absorbing (理解) everything the person is saying to you.Only after that can you really try to help.

Know what not to do.Knowing what to avoid when you're trying to be a good listener can be almost as helpful as knowing what to do.If you want the speaker to take you seriously you'd better not interrupt in the middle of a point.  5   Make eye contact with the person so that the person realizes that you are interested and are listening.

    A.Don't try to help immediately.

    B.Avoid saying “I” or “me” a lot.

C.Try to solve the person's problem quickly.

D.Don't try to change the subject, even if it's a little uncomfortable.

E.If so, you would see your way through the problems much faster.

F.Therefore you had better listen to what the person is saying carefully.

G.If you want to know how to be a good listener, read on to get started!
