Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to the idea that they have a "sixth sense" for disasters, experts said on Thursday.
Sri Lanka wildlife officials have said the waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a 'sixth sense'. They know when things are happening," H.D. Ratnayake, director of Sri Lanka's Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday.
The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km(2 miles)inland at Yala National Park in the southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants. "There has been a lot of evidence(证据)about dogs barking or birds migrating(迁徙)before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proved." said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo. "There have been no specific studies because you can't really test it in a lab or field setting," he said. Other authorities agreed with this conclusion.
“Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain signs, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters," said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators(掠食动物), The idea of an animal "sixth sense" is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lanka's damaged coast is likely to add to.

A. Many people died but wild animals survived. B. The "six sense" of wild animals developed

Making my way slowly along the cliff (悬崖) face, I gazed (注视) at the great appearance of each temple I passed. As I entered the first cave and looked up at the feitian—an imagined flying god in Buddhist art, I wondered how many hundreds of thousands of others, from near and far, have looked at the same great paintings and statues.
Sometime between the 4th and 14th century, Mogao was an important Buddhist center connecting East Asia and South Asia. Hundreds of caves were carved into a cliff face running along the Daquan River. Located on the ancient Silk Road, one of the great trade routes in ancient times, it created an environment of artistic and cultural exchange between the different cultures.
My personal adventure to Dunhuang had taken me, by way of train and bus, from Xining in Qinghai Province to Lanzhou in Gansu Province, and through the Jiayu Pass. From there, I continued on through Yumen Pass, also known as the Jade Gate, and crossed the Gobi Desert to find this small and sleepy desert town, and to see these caves for myself.
As I explored the temples,I was amazed by the vividness (生动性) of the paintings and statues. It was almost as though they were painted or carved the day before. I had discovered the reason why people travel.
There are more than 2,000 coloured statues that were carved 1,500 years ago. More than 1,400statues are well-protected so they can still be appreciated. During the thousand years of artistic activity, the style of the wall paintings and statues changed. The early caves show greater Indian and Western influences, while during the Tang Dynasty the influences of Chinese painting styles became noticeable.
Today, the Mogao Caves stand out from the desert like a shinning pearl on the Silk Road.
6. What do we know about Mogao?
A. It was a Buddhist center in West Asia. B. It can be easily reached by train and bus.
C. It has carved caves on Daquan Mountains. D. It was the meeting point for different cultures.
7. Which is the writer's travelling route (路线) according to paragraph 3?
A. B.
C. D.
8. What made the writer amazed?
A. The well-protected temples. B. The large number of tourists.
C. The preserved coloured statues. D. Some paintings made not long ago.
9. Which of the following best describes the wall paintings and statues?
A. Highly developed. B. Plain. C. Culturally mixed. D. Noticeable.
10. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Style Changes Over Years B. The Pearl of the Silk Road
C. Influential Western Culture D. My Views on Dunhuang

In a world on fire and underwater, scientists have announced some good news: Several important tuna(金枪鱼)species have stepped back from the edge of extinction.
Two bluefin tuna species, a yellowfin, and an albacore are no longer seriously endangered or have moved off the leading international list of endangered species entirely.
The unexpectedly fast recovery speaks to the success of efforts over the past decade to end overfishing. But tuna are not the only species scientists are thinking carefully at the 2021 World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France, which is organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Researchers warn that many other sea species continued to be imperiled. For example, more than a third of the world's sharks are still threatened with extinction due to overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change.
“I think the good news is that sustainable (可持续的) fishing industry are possible,” says Beth Polidoro, a biologist at Arizona State University. “We can eat fish without reducing the population to the point where it is on the road to dying out or extinction." At the same time, she warns that the recovery should not encourage us to catch as many fish as we want. “We need to keep doing what's working." Polidoro adds.
The IUCN, which determines the world's most endangered species on its Red List of Threatened Species, also announced at the meeting that some animals are moving in the other direction, onto the Red List. Like the Komodo dragon, an lizard (蜥蜴), it is at particular risk from climate change.
Of course, the work of protection is never over, and it will require close and continuous attention to make sure neither tuna nor Komodo dragons return to the edge of dying out. But for now, people can celebrate a few wins for the animal world.
11. What is the good news about tuna?
A. They have been removed from the list of endangered species.
B. The fishing of tuna has been put to an end completely.
C. The population of some tuna species has recovered
D. The number of some tuna species increases slowly
12. What does the underlined word "imperiled" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Dangerous. B. Sustainable. C. Disappointing. D. Endangered
13. What can we learn from Beth Polidoro's words?
A. We can fish tuna as much as we want. B. Protecting tuna is a long way to go.
C. We shouldn't encourage tuna fishing. D. The population of tuna will reduce.
14. Why does the writer mention "the Komodo dragon" in paragraph 5?
A. To introduce a topic. B. To make a comparison. C. To explain an idea. D. To give an example.
15. What is the writer's attitude towards the recovery of the tuna species?
A. Positive. B. Concerned. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.

【66题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Learn to Exist in Harmony with Nature
Every time I think about Zhaxi's words “We’re not trying to save the animals. Actually, we’re trying to save ourselves.”, the image of Tibetan antelopes appears in my mind. For them, the 1980s and 1990s were bad times. The population dropped by more than 50 percent. There were two causes of this serious situation. For one thing, hunters were shooting antelopes to make profits. For another, as new roads and railways were built, their habitats were becoming smaller. To save this species from extinction, national nature reserves were established to provide shelter for antelopes. Besides, bridges and gates were added to help them move safely across different habitats. In my opinion, when harming wildlife like antelopes, we are destroying ourselves, because we are also part of nature and cannot survive on our own. Only when we live in harmony with nature can we save ourselves.
