A tip to the library was like a great journey to a different county. To get there, we had to walk a mile. But our weekly journeys to the library were a piece of perfection. I had around me at one time all the people I loved best—my father and mother and brothers and sister—and all the things I loved best—quiet, space, and books.
I read a lot of books about science: not the spaceships my brothers preferred, but the birds and bees—literally. I brought home a book of birds and searched the trees for anything other than robins. I went through a phase of loving books with practical science experiments and used up a whole bottle of white vinegar by pouring it on the sides of our apartment building to prove that it was constructed of limestone.
One Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section, I saw a title: Little Women, by Lousia May Alcott. I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home.
So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs. I read and read and read Little Women until it was time to walk home, and, except for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating. I did not put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in the wake of Alcott’s story. It was about girls, for one thing, girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo. I had found someone who thought and felt the way I did.

A. She was totally transformed.
B. It made her sleepless and tasteless.
C. She was heartbroken.
D. It kept her absorbed.

Chinese astronauts conducted a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth to millions of students on Thursday afternoon, as they orbited in the Tiangong space station. All members of the Shenzhou XII mission crew, Zhai Zhigang, Ye Guangfu and Wang Yaping, the only woman on the mission, greeted students, teachers and other participants when the lecture started at 3:54 pm. They showed viewers how they live and work inside the space station, which currently consists of a core module, a spacecraft and two robotic cargo spaceships.
The astronauts displayed their exercise equipment and a specially designed space suit, and conducted demonstrations on physical phenomena in microgravity, such as “disappearing buoyancy” and a “water ball”. Ye, who is on his first spaceflight, showed how he rotated his body in the weightless environment. The astronauts also answered questions from students during the lecture.
Tens of millions of primary and middle school students across China watched the hourlong televised event. A total of 1,420 invited students were present at “ground class venues”, with some taking part in video chats with the crew members during the lecture.
It was the first lecture of the Tiangong Class, or Heavenly Palace Class, China’s first extraterrestrial (地球外的) lecture series to popularize space science.
More lectures will be held based on the country’s manned spaceflights and will also be presented by Chinese astronauts, the manned space agency said.

You’re often served by young people at restaurants. But Forget Me Not Cafe in Shanghai is different.
The cafe has eight elderly employees with cognitive impairments (认知障碍) who take turns working with other waiters to help customers. They often provide basic services for guests, such as pouring water, serving and taking orders.
“The guests are also very tolerant of us, because sometimes we make mistakes,” said Zhu Caiping, one of the elderly employees at the cafe. Sometimes, they are also invited to take part in welfare activities organized by volunteers, such as baking, dancing and learning English.
“These activities are essential for me. They reactivate my brain,” the 73-year-old said. “What old people like us worry about most is that our brain stagnates (停滞) due to being inactive.”
Because of memory loss, Zhu writes down all the information she wants to remember on sticky notes, such as the names of the volunteers and the teacher as well as English words. “But I really became happy and confident because of being here,” she said.
In addition to the job opportunities for the elderly, information about cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease is posted on a board outside the restaurant to help people recognize symptoms and seek treatment as soon as possible.

A 58-year-old woman from Jiangsu province, whose husband brings her to the restaurant, is an example. “When she came here for the first time, she barely said a word and was indifferent. I told her that she must communicate and gave her homework every time with rewards,” Zhu said. The woman has since come to the restaurant every Friday, and after several months, her condition has improved.
“She started to comment that the food was ‘delicious’ and speak with others. Moreover, she began to hug me every time,” Zhu said.
Inspired by their kindness, many young people like to come and enjoy the warm atmosphere of the shop.

I’m coming to the end of my first semester in Italy, and I couldn’t be happier. I have met some incredible people, seen some beautiful places and also learned how to cook pasta properly. 36 However, there are definitely some things that I’ve had to remind myself along the way.
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
I’m very much a perfectionist. Sometimes, this can be a good thing, but in this case, it makes you too stressed. The more frustrated you become when you don’t pick something up right away, the less you absorb. 37 Improvement is gradual, and you won’t notice that you’ve improved for a while.
38
Even if you haven’t mastered an Italian accent, or don’t know a particular word, everyone will appreciate it if you just try. Sometimes, saying an English word with a slightly more Italian accent turns everyone will appreciate it if you just try. Sometimes, saying an English word with a slightly more Italian accent turns out to be right. In any case, people will understand.
Confidence comes with time.
Such a huge part of learning to speak another language is being confident enough to actually say what you’re thinking out loud. 39 And after a while you realize that you’ve stopped being nervous at all.
It’s OK to feel overwhelmed at times.
There are definitely moments when I think I can’t keep up—especially if there is more than one conversation happening simultaneously or if someone takes me by surprise. Needless to say, one of the first phrases I picked up here was how to ask someone to repeat themselves. 40
A. People appreciate effort.
B. Accent is no more important than try.
C. Adopt the European way and relax a little.
D. Big thanks to my friends for being unbelievably patient.
E. Also, I would like to think that my Italian has improved.
F. Perfectionism is like a double-edged sword—it cuts both ways.
G. It’s OK to be nervous to say things you aren’t 100 percent sure about.

Burning charcoal releases greenhouse 47 such as carbon dioxide, which leads to climate change.
Vinisha, a student from Tamil Nadu, India, had the idea of crating a renewable energy source to 48 charcoal.

第Ⅱ卷
第二节(共10小题:每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
As the world sees more and more extreme weather patterns, it is becoming 56 (increase) difficult to ignore the effects of climate change. It is now a common topic of discussion and has even found 57 (it) way into the books we read. Because of this, a genre called climate fiction, or cli-fi, has found new life.
The term “cli-fi” was first used in 2007 by US climate activist and writer Dan Bloom. He wanted to make “climate fiction” more fascinating. According to Bloom, the term really gained 58 (popular) when Canadian writer Margaret Atwood used it in a tweet, 59 (introduce) it to her half-a-million followers.
As the name suggests, climate fiction refers to stories with the 60 (center) theme of climate change or global warming. These kinds of books can help us imagine 61 the world might be like in the future because of major climate change events.
In 2015, cli-fi author Sarah Holding wrote for The Guardian that cli-fi “ 62 (reconnect) young readers with their environment”, 63 helps them appreciable it more, “especially when today, a large amount of their time is spent in the virtual word”. Cli-fi has also helped to inspire students to pursue science majors, 64 some universities even offering courses specifically focusing on climate fiction.
As Atwood wrote in her dystopian cli-fi novel MaddAddam, “People need such stories, because 65 dark, a darkness with voices in it is better than a silent void.”

The whole class burst out laughing as John rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were too big in size. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
John murmured, “Sorry, teacher,” and quickly stepped to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. John’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by John’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the pajama top and green sandals.
John lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. Although John was adorable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Harry, who sat next to John, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, John did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Harry decided to walk over to John’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. John must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Harry let himself in. He called John’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Harry peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, John was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played perfectly, so much so that it sounded like a recording. Harry left quietly.

Should we click for friends?
Nowadays, the arrival of the digital age brings people increasing ease in accessibility, enabling us to make friends online more easily. However, whether we should click for friends is gradually coming into focus.
On one hand, the Internet provides us with a platform where we can easily get acquainted with people who share our interests. Besides, social media tools make us aware of what our friends are up to and maintain friendship. On the other hand, making friends online might expose us to the risk of being cheated and privacy being leaked.
We cannot throw the baby out with the bathwater. Just be careful when acquiring friends, both in virtuality and reality.
第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
Paragraph 1 (评分建议:写出计划,如:Harry说服同学让John表演)
When Teacher’s Day came around, Harry had a plan. It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had to contribute an item. Harry convinced the class to let John perform. Short of ideas, the class agreed. When the invitation approached John, he jumped at it. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school’s clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin.
Paragraph 2(评分建议:写John的精彩表现使同学惊叹并改变看法。)
When he started to play, the audience fell silent. Jaws dropped. Everyone was stricken dumb with amazement and also carried away by the beautiful notes flowing from the strings. There were no more judgments on John’s dressing or behavior, but the entertainment by his remarkable performance. As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. John became a sensation and had many fans in his final year of school though he still arrives to class wearing an inside-out shirt or mismatched shoes.

M: Well, interest rates are low and it’s a very good time to get a mortgage (抵押贷款).
W: We’d probably need a 20% down payment. Where are we going to get 24,000 dollars?
M: We’d have to sell our house, of course.
W: Our house is only valued at 75,000.
M: Yes, but we only owe about 30,000 on the mortgage. If we sold it, we would have 45,000 dollars to use.
W: Maybe we should just take a look at it first.
Text 9
M: We have just moved into a house.
W: Congratulations!
M: Thank you, and we want to buy a new television.
W: What kind of television do you want to buy?
M: A color TV, of course, but I’m not sure about the size. Maybe we should buy a big one. If we buy a smaller one, we might have to change it in a few years for a bigger one. That would be a waste of money. What is your opinion?
W: In my opinion, I don’t think it’s necessary to buy a very big one.
M: Any reason?
W: Yes. If your sitting room isn’t big enough, you put in a very big television, that will be bad for your eyes, but a smaller size TV can also pick up good programs.
M: Um, that’s quite true. I’ll think about it.
W: You’d better make a quick decision because the price may go up now.
Text 10
M: Good evening, class. Before we begin tonight’s lesson, I want to remind you about next Thursday’s mid-term. Remember to review chapters one through eight in the book. You will be responsible for knowing all of the information in the chapters plus all of the other topics we have discussed in class. Last week, we talked about the importance of using note cards and visual aids to prepare your speeches. Tonight I’ll tell you the details that could help you with your speech delivery. Please take careful notes. The first and perhaps the most important thing of good speech delivery is eye contact. It is extremely important, especially in the English-speaking world, to make eye contact with all your audience. This may be very difficult for you if you come from a culture where making direct eye contact is a sign of disrespect. But, you really need to practice this skill until you are comfortable looking directly at all of your audience members when you are speaking to them. Please note that you need to look at the entire audience. Please don’t direct your attention to just one person or one side of the room, and don’t stare into the eyes of anyone for a long time.
