    Wuthering Heights
It is the work of Emily Bronte, one of the Bronte sisters, and one of the representative works of English literature in the 19th century. The novel describes the abandoned Gypsy son Heathcliff, who was adopted by the old owner of the villa, went out to become rich because of humiliation(耻辱)and failed love. When he returned, he took revenge on Linton, the landlord who married his girlfriend Catherine, and his children. The whole article is full of a strong spirit of struggle against oppression and happiness, and is always covered with a strange and tense romantic atmosphere. This work has been adapted into film works many times.
    Jane Eyre
It is mainly about an orphan girl, Jane Eyre, who was adopted at her uncle's home when she was a child. Her uncle hated her very much. After her uncle died, she was sent to a church school. A few years later, at about eighteen, she fell in love with Mr. Rochester. And just as they were getting married, she learned that the man had a mad wife, so she left sadly and was saved by three brothers and sisters. She became a teacher in a humble school anonymously. Years later, Jane Eyre, who became wealthy, still missed Mr. Rochester and quietly returned to his manor(庄园), only to find that Mr. Rochester was injured and blind, and the castle was ruined in the fire set by his mad wife. So Jane Eyre returned to Mr. Rochester, who was single then, and they began a happy life.

Through this novel Dickens told a story of the ups and downs of the orphan and expressed his view on life and human nature.
    David Copperfield
Its hero, orphaned as a boy, grows up to discover love and happiness, heartbreak and sorrow amid a cast of eccentrics(古怪的人), innocents, and villains(坏人). Praising Dickens's power of invention, Somerset Maugham wrote: "There were never such people as the Micawbers, Peggotty and Barkis, Traddles, Betsey Trotwood and Mr. Dick, Uriah Heep and his mother. They are fantastic inventions of Dickens's imagination…you can never quite forget them."

    B
When I was a kid I was a bit of a scaredy-cat. The "adventurer" in my family has always been my big brother. Still, I'm always trying to shake up the scaredy-cat inside me. And I've always known how important it is for girls to feel brave. However, girls, at large, experience so much hesitancy and a drop in confidence as they grow up.
One way to stop losing heart is to encourage a sense of adventure in girls before they are teenagers. Such adventures don't have to be big. Research from Angelia Ruskin University shows that even just going for a walk or a run outside leaves people feeling more confident and better about their bodies. After all nature doesn't care how we look. It doesn't care who our friends are or what grades we get. It is a place where we can really be ourselves.
That's why I teamed up with Amy Blackwell, the award-winning illustrator, to create a middle-grade book containing real-life women's adventures from around the world, from 2,000 years ago to today. The Girl Who Rode a Shark and Other Stories of Daring Women has been receiving star reviews in lots of places.
It is all of those amazing women that make the book a hit. While reading, they can trace the ocean-soaring flights of pilot Amelia Earhart, follow Isabella Bird's exploration up the Yangtze River and meet Kimi Werner, the freediving chef who met with a great white shark. That's why kids just can't get enough of those stories. I hope these stories can help so many kids feel confident and excited when they walk into the world.
As for me? While I still feel a little nervous to begin an adventure up a big mountain or across a frozen river, I feel I have more courage than I did as a kid. I now have a lot of role models to help me.
    4. What does the underlined part in the first paragraph probably mean?
    A. The author wants to keep a pet cat.
    B. The author makes effort to overcome her fear.
    C. The author wishes to beat her brother in the game.
    D. The author plans to experience an adventure on her own.
    5. According to Paragraph 2, what may be helpful in increasing girls' confidence?
    A. Playing outdoor sports. B. Having a long-term hobby.
    C. Making friends with strangers. D. Improving their school performance.
    6. What do we know about the stories in the author's book?
    A. They are all travel diaries. B. They are based on true stories.
    C. They teach girls how to succeed. D. They are designed for preschool kids.
    7. Why does the author list some stories from her book?
    A. To express her pride in her career. B. To attract more readers to writing.
    C. To present the trouble of creating her stories. D. To explain the reason for the book's popularity.
B 5. A 6. B 7. D

    C
On average, we each eat more than 20 kilograms of fish per year. Worldwide, between 1961 and 2016, fish consumption increased faster than meat consumption, and grew twice as fast as the human population. All of these fishy dinners have reduced marine fish stocks to a point where a third of global fish stocks are now classed as "overfished". Fishing also has negative impacts on non-food species in the ecosystem, and pollutes the waters with fishing waste. Temporary fishing bans may help, but what if we banned fishing altogether?
One thing is for sure: the ocean would hopefully become a better place for marine species. Recent years have seen plastic products much less used as the public has woken up to the effects of marine plastics. But few people realize the contribution that fishing makes. Pieces of abandoned fishing tools account for about 10 percent of all marine litter, and according to a 2018 study, 86 percent of the big pieces of plastics floating in the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch". Without fishing, we'd also wipe out emission from fishing boats. One 2014 study claimed that fishing industry was actually highly fuel-consuming, like lobsters, with some boats using 20,000 liters of fuel to catch a single ton.
However, what we must not forget is that our planet is highly dependent on fishing in various ways. Around the world,40 million people earn their living directly from catching wild fish, while another 19 million are employed in relevant industries. A total ban on fishing would make it hard for them to put food in their families' mouths. Moreover, seafood is a major source of protein across Southeast Asia and islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. So while in Europe or the US people could eat more meat or soy products to make up for lost protein, there could be food shortage in communities with little land-based farming.
Though not a realistic choice, a total fishing ban is an interesting thought experiment, which may throw light on how man can get along with marine species. After all, the damage fishing does to the entire ecosystem and the pollution it brings about are becoming so enormous that it's time we did something to change it.
    8. Why would the ocean become a better place if we banned fishing altogether?
    A. Because there would be less pollution to the ocean.
    B. Because the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" would disappear.
    C. Because lobster fishing boats would consume less fuel.
    D. Because people would realize the effects of using plastics.
    9. What could happen to humans if fishing were completely banned?
    A. Some would suffer from a lack of food.
    B. Some would change their diet and eat less meat.
    C. Some communities would start developing land-based farming.
    D. Some workers would have to find jobs in fishing-relevant industries.
    10. What is the author's attitude towards a total fishing ban?
    A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Concerned.
    11. What can be the best title for the passage?
    A. The Urgent Need of a Total Fishing Ban. B. The Harmful Effects of Fishing industry.
    C. A Newly Launched Policy on Fishing Industry. D. An Assumption of a Complete Fishing Ban.
A 9. A 10. B 11. D

    D
A new type of rechargeable battery can rapidly produce charges in large quantities even at-70° Celsius, a temperature where the typical lithium-ion(锂离子) batteries that power many of today's devices don't work. Batteries that bear such extremely cold conditions could help build electronics that function in some of the coldest places on Earth or on other planets.
Inside lithium-ion batteries, ions flow between positive and negative electrodes(电极), where the ions are fixed and then set free to travel back through a substance called an electrolyte(电解质) to the other end. As the temperature drops, the ions move slowly through the electrolyte. The cold also makes it hard for lons to get rid of the electrolyte material that sticks onto them. As they cross the battery, ions must cast the matter to fit into the electrode material, explains a battery researcher at Fudan University. At-40℃, conventional lithium-ion batteries deliver about 12 percent of the charge they do at room temperature; at-70℃, they don't work at all.
The new battery contains a special kind of electrolyte that allows ions to flow easily between electrodes even in the bitter cold. The researchers also fitted their battery with electrodes made of organic compounds(有机化合物) rather than the typical transition-metal-rich materials. lons can flow freely in this organic material without having to get rid of the electrolyte material attached to them. So these organic electrodes catch and release ions more easily than electrodes in normal batteries, even at low temperatures, Dong says.
Because the ions flow better and connect more readily with the electrodes at low temperatures, the new battery keeps about 70 percent of its room-temperature charging capacity even at-70℃. Still, battery cells in the new design pack less energy per gram than standard lithium-ion batteries, says Shirley Meng, a material scientist in California. She would like to see whether a more energy-dense(能量密度高的) version of the battery can be built.
    12. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that the new battery___________.
A is applied to most of the electronics B. can work longer than lithium-ion batteries
    C. will replace lithium-ion batteries in the future D. makes using electronics possible in extreme cold
    13. Why is temperature the key factor for lithium-ion batteries to work well?
    A. Because it's hard for ions to fit into electrodes at low temperatures.
    B. Because electrolytes can't conduct electricity in the cold.
    C. Because electrodes are unstable in too hot temperatures.
    D. Because lons don't move at low temperatures.
    14. What's the advantage of electrodes made of organic compounds?
    A. Containing more ions. B. Making ions more active.
    C. Making the battery rechargeable. D. Casting more electrolyte materials.
    15. More efforts will be made towards improving the new battery so that it can ___________.
    A. have a longer life B. carry more energy C. charge more quickly D. be easier to get
D 13. A 14. B 15. B
根据第一段中的“Batteries that bear such extremely cold conditions could help build electronics that function in some of the coldest places on Earth or on other planets.”(能够承受如此极端寒冷条件的电池可以帮助在地球上最冷的地方或其他行星上建立电子设备。)
根据第二段“Inside lithium-ion batteries, ions flow between positive and negative electrodes(电极), where the ions are fixed and then set free to travel back through a substance called an electrolyte(电解质) to the other end. As the temperature drops, the ions move slowly through the electrolyte. The cold also makes it hard for lons to get rid of the electrolyte material that sticks onto them. As they cross the battery, ions must cast the matter to fit into the electrode material, explains a battery researcher at Fudan University. At-40℃, conventional lithium-ion batteries deliver about 12 percent of the charge they do at room temperature; at-70℃, they don't work at all.”(在锂离子电池内部,离子在正极和负极之间流动,离子在正极和负极之间被固定,然后通过一种叫做电解质的物质回流到另一端。 故选A。
根据第三段中的“The researchers also fitted their battery with electrodes made of organic compounds(有机化合物) rather than the typical transition-metal-rich materials. Ions can flow freely in this organic material without having to get rid of the electrolyte material attached to them. So these organic electrodes catch and release ions more easily than electrodes in normal batteries, even at low temperatures, Dong says.”(研究人员还给他们的电池安装了由有机化合物制成的电极,而不是典型的富含过渡金属的材料。
根据最后一段中的“Still, battery cells in the new design pack less energy per gram than standard lithium-ion batteries, says Shirley Meng, a material scientist in California. She would like to see whether a more energy-dense(能量密度高的) version of the battery can be built.”(加利福尼亚材料科学家Shirley Meng说,尽管如此,新设计的电池每克电量比标准锂离子电池要少。

If You've Got an Interview,Get Your Etiquette (礼仪) Right
INTERVIEWING for a job is like going battle. You need to be prepared. Just being polite may not be enough. ___16___ Here, 21st Century identifies the traps and shows you how to deal with them.
___17___ Even though your interviewer should already have one, they may still ask for a copy to test your preparedness.
Avoid arriving too early. Of course, it's not good to be late, but if you arrive too early you could give the impression that you cannot follow directions. Also, your early arrival could upset the interviewer's schedule, if he or she still has things to accomplish before meeting with you. ___18___ . You can spend time in a cafe or a shopping mall if your taxi or bus gets you there too early.
Hold your tongue in the waiting room. ___19___ Doing so could cause you to lose focus. Also, remember that your behaviour and conversation may be monitored by office staff. So, if another interviewee tries to talk with you, smile and ask for a few minutes to yourself.
When you accept a cup of water or tea, be careful that you do not spill it—on yourself or the floor. ___20___ Otherwise, you could accidentally spill the drink and cause yourself to feel embarrassed.
And, finally, after you get back home, it's important to take time to write a short letter or e-mail expressing thanks. Keep it brief. Do not ask about the interviewer's impression of you, or about your chances of getting hired. This might make you sound like a pushy (有企图心的) person!

故填a。
故填to create。

We went to New York a few years ago and I had a wonderful time living there. I made many good friends both in the neighbourhood and at school. Then one night, Dad told me, "We're moving back to L.A. You'll go first, and then your mom and I will follow."
It was hard for me to adapt to the new school. I didn't like this school, a high school with some strange rules that I had never heard of. I had no friends there and struggled a lot with study. Besides, I disliked living in the house of my aunt. Luckily, my parents returned and we moved into a small apartment.
However, living with them didn't make my school life much better. They were busy unpacking and managing to adapt to the new environment and their work. They even didn't know what I was experiencing at school, I felt lonely and helpless. "Come on, darling. This move has been difficult for all of us." Mom encouraged me. However, her words didn't help at all.
Then one Friday night, my mom said to me delightedly, "I'm taking you to your grandma's house tomorrow. She has said you're welcome to spend this weekend with her. "But I wasn't happy about this idea. I had never seen my grandma since I was 5. What was I going to do there with her? The next morning, my mom drove me to my grandma's house in the country.
On the long ride, my mom kept reminding me to help grandma do housework and listen to her suggestions. But I just thought, "Grandma isn't anything like me. She can't possibly understand what I am going through. What good suggestions or encouragement can she offer?"
After arriving, my mom left for work. "Hi, Barbie," Grandma said excitedly." Come in. I've got many fun things planned." I just entered the room and said all I wanted was to watch TV.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
Then I walked forward, wanting to turn on the TV.

Paragraph 1:
Then I walked forward, wanting to turn on the TV. 【But she stopped me. She had some plans for me. Firstly, I’d help do some housework, including doing the laundry and walking the dog. It was really fun to do these things on a warm day with a gentle breeze. At noon, she taught me how to make traditional meals. We talked a lot while making meals and I felt the long-lost warmth. I started pouring out my trouble at school. I told her that I felt lonely because I had no friends at school.】
    Paragraph 2:
After hearing that, Grandma told me a story of her to encourage me to adapt to my new life. 【She made me understand I could handle my problem in such ways as showing others friendliness. And she made me realize my parents were always there supporting me. At 17:00, Mom arrived to pick me up. After saying goodbye to Grandma, I got into the car. I went back to school on Monday morning with a positive attitude. Before long, I made friends and improved my study. I was so grateful to Grandma for her wonderful suggestions.】
