Traffic lights are red, yellow and green. They are very important signals(信号).Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic.Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.
The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks(轨道).The color red was used to mean “stop” because it warned people of danger.A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance.Train drivers could see the red “stop” light ahead and had enough time to slow down and stop their trains.A green light was used to mean “take care” and a white light meant “go”.
However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train drivers thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant “go”.So the signals were swapped. The “go” light was changed to green and the “take care” light was changed to white.
During these times, people traveled by train or in carts pulled by horses.Years later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and many people were hurt crossing the roads.Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely.

What time does your school start?Do you wish you could get up later every morning? You are not alone if your answer is “yes”.In the US,many middle school students have the same wish.
In America, many schools start before 7:30 a.m.But that may change soon.A new law has been passed in California.According to the law, middle schools should not start before 8:00 a.m.The government hopes school children will have longer time in bed.
Many scientific studies show that teenagers are more active in the afternoon and in the evening.Simply telling them to go to bed earlier doesn’t work well. Most of them don’t get enough sleep because of bad sleeping habits and early school starting time. They need more sleep in the morning.Scientists suggest middle schools should start at 8:00 a.m.or later.Students can get well ready to learn and they won’t fall asleep in class.________The change can help improve students’ grades.
While scientists are happy with the new law, many parents disagree with it.They won’t be able to send their children to school before they go to work. They also fear that later school starting time will lead to later ending time.As a result, their children will have less time to take part in after-school activities.

47.C
48.C 解析 根据“Can you imagine if after many falls...”和“and doesn’t let the baby continue to try?”
49.A
50.A 解析 句意:我回到实验室,开始(研究)5 UP……start with从…… 着手;come up with提出,想出;look forward to期待;be willing to愿意。
51.A 解析 finally最后;first首先;luckily幸运的是;second第二,其次。
give out分发;give up放弃;give away 赠送,泄露;give in屈服。

One possible version
Everyone has a person he wants to say thank-you to in his deep heart.I am very grateful to my mother.
My mother is a primary school teacher who graduated from a normal university. She is a devoted mother as well as a kind and patient teacher. She takes good care of me every day, especially this year when I am in Junior Three. She often cooks delicious food for me and helps me clean up my room.
What’s more, she even accompanies me deep into the night every time I am doing my homework. Most important of all, whenever I get upset or lose heart, she will encourage me until I have been cheered up.She always says,“As long as you work hard, you will definitely succeed.”
Now I try my best to study and spend almost all my time on my lessons in order to get into a good high school next year. This is the best way for me to thank my mother.
