W: A big dog celebrates a big birthday this year. Clifford the Big Red Dog, first appeared 50 years ago along with Emily Elizabeth, a little girl who loves him. Today we have Norman Bridwell to talk with NBR's Reporter on his dog's 50th birthday. So, Norman, tell us how it all started.
M: Well, it was 1962, and I was a struggling, not very successful artist in New York. My wife suggested that I try my hand in painting for children's books. So I did ten paintings and took them to publishers. I was turned down everywhere except one publisher where a young woman told me I wasn't very good. So if I want to paint for a book, I need to write one on my own.
    W: So you did?
M: Oh, the woman pointed to a painting I had done—a little girl with a big red dog, and she said maybe that is a story, and I went home and over that weekend I wrote the story—Clifford the Big Red Dog, and I was shocked it was accepted for publication, because I never wrote anything before.
    W: I see. How wonderful!
M: Yes, it was. My wife was also in shock when she did realize it wasn't a dream, but it was just luck.
W: But that luck turned into 90 Clifford books. And it sold 126 million copies in thirteen languages.

W: Today I'm talking to teenage surfer RoB. Rob, welcome. Tell us about how you started surfing.
M: Well, my family have always loved going to our local beach, and my dad became keen on surfing. He wasn't very good, but he really wanted to show me how to do it, and my mum offered to buy me a board, I still wasn't keen, but then I started watching surfing competitions near home, and when I saw the standard of the surfers, I just felt I could do better.
W: Very confident! So do you go surfing all year round now?
M: Yes, even in winter when it's cold! The sea is actually warmer than the land. I just wear the same wetsuit as I do in the summer, although sometimes I do add gloves.
W: And your biggest achievement was surfing an enormous wave!
M: Oh, yeah! That kind of wave only comes along a couple of times a year. I was nervous. The waves were a lot bigger than they look from the beach. People say it hurts if you fall off in those conditions, but I didn't have time to think about that.
W: You're still young. What next?
M: Well, I'm going to miss the next big competition, as I've injured my ankle, but my future's definitely in surfing, so I need to investigate what opportunities there are. There's a course in surfing science you can do at the university here, but I'm not sure that's the right path for me at the moment.
    W: Well, thank you, Rob.

You can bring three guests at one time. And you must be able to present you membership card if a club official asks to see it. Well, here are the changing rooms with showers and lockers for your clothes and things. Obviously, you don't have to leave your clothes in the lockers. Yet we strongly advise you to. It is much safer. First, you should pay 20 pence for the locker. But you get the coin back when you take your things out. And the tennis courts are round here to the left. You can book the courts for 30minutes or an hour. However, you can carry on playing until the next players arrive. We have a club bar which serves food and drink behind the reception. The club bar is open from 9:00 a.m until 11:00 p.m. But all players must leave the courts by 10: 00 p.m. We hope you have a good time here.

Around the time I turned 40, I went to see a therapist, a man who knew me well. I tended to call him once or twice a year on an as-needed basis. I had reached the point of being able to sort through most problems on my own. But life had—as it occasionally does—grown suddenly complicated.
I had been trying with no success to have a second child. We had made an abrupt move from New York City to rural Connecticut in the wake of September 11. My mother had recently died. I was still shrinking from a difficult and frightening year. I found myself questioning everything entirely: “Does any of this make sense?”
“Everything about you makes sense,” said my therapist.
I found these words enormously comforting as they always are from him. I so badly wanted the narrative of my life to make sense. Two brief failed marriages—one at 18 the other at 28? Makes sense. My uneasy relationship to faith and doubt, having been raised in a strict, religious home? Makes sense. The emptiness I continued to feel at the early loss of my father? Makes sense. My impossibly anxious relationship with my mother? Make sense.
My husband, a screenwriter, is often asked to adapt biographies for film, and the struggle, he often says, is that lives have first acts, but they don’t have third acts(until they’re over) and second acts are just one damned thing after another. So how to understand the narratives of our lives? How to trust that everything about us makes sense?
Lately I’ve been wondering if perhaps the answer to this is not to even attempt to smooth things out. Sure life’s road is nothing if not filled with unexpected surprises, both happy and not-so-happy ones.
    21. What made the author begin to question everything?
    A. Her old age. B. The therapist’s intervention.
    C. Complicated life. D. Breakdowns in her life.
    22. How does the author make her point convincing?
    A. By giving examples. B. By making a comparison.
    C. By using data. D. By presenting findings.
    23. What of the following statements does the writer agree with?
    A. Every dog has its day. B. Enjoy your life while you can.
    C. Life is made up of sobs and smiles. D. One careless move may lose the whole game.
D 22. A 23. C
I had been trying with no success to have a second child. We had made an abrupt move from New York City to rural Connecticut in the wake of September 11. My mother had recently died. B
More than four decades ago British scientist Robert Edwards first witnessed the miracle of human life growing inside a test tube at his Cambridge lab. Since that ground-breaking moment, more than four million babies have been born through IVF(试管受精)and yesterday his great contribution to science was finally recognized as he was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine.
It was a scientific breakthrough that transformed the lives of millions of couples. They said: "His achievements have made it possible to treat infertility, a disease which makes human unable to have a baby. This condition has been afflicting a large percentage of mankind including more than 10% of all couples worldwide."
Louise Brown, the world's first test tube baby, made international headlines when she was born in Oldham, Gtr Manchester, in 1978 to parents Lesley and John who had been fruitlessly trying for a baby since 1969.
Ivf-in-vitro fertilization is the process whereby egg cells are fertilized outside the body before being implanted in the womb. After a cycle of IVF, the probability of a couple with infertility problems having a baby is one in five—the same as healthy couples who conceive naturally.
Prof. Edwards, who has five daughters and 11 grandchildren, began his research at Cambridge University in 1963, after receiving his PhD in 1955. He once said: "The most important thing in life is having a child. Nothing is more special than a child." With the help of fellow scientist Patrick Steptoe, Prof. Edwards founded the Bourn Hall clinic in Cambridgeshire, which now treats more than 900 women a year. Each year, more than 30,000 women in Britain now undergo IVF and 11,000 babies are born as a result of the treatment.
But his work attracted widespread criticism from some scientists and the Catholic Church who said it was "unethical and immoral".
Prof. Edwards was too ill to give interviews yesterday but a statement released by his family said he was "thrilled and delighted".
    24. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. More than forty million babies have been born through IVF so far.
    B. More than 50 percent of all couples have the infertility problems.
    C. Edwards felt sympathy for the couple without children.
    D. Mrs. Brown had the baby Louise in a natural way.
    25. The underlined word “afflicting" in paragraph 2 most probably means?
    A. Developing. B. Troubling.
    C. Improving. D. Supporting.
    26. It can be inferred from the passage that________.
    A. 20 percent of the couples with infertility problems can have a child through IVF.
    B. Louise Brown attracted attention throughout the world directly she was born in 1969.
    C. IVF has been invented by Edwards recently.
    D. Professor Edward's work was critisized for financial reasons.
C 25. B 26. A
根据第五段第二句Edwards提到:“The most important thing in life is having a child. Nothing is more special than a child. ”(人生最重要的事情就是有一个孩子。没有什么比孩子更特别了。),可知我们能从这篇文章中学到爱德华兹对这对没有孩子的夫妇表示同情。故选C。
    【25题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段第二三句They said: “His achievements have made it possible to treat infertility, a disease which makes human unable to have a baby. This condition has been afflicting a large percentage of mankind including more than 10% of all couples worldwide.”( 他们说:“他的成就使治疗不孕症成为可能。不孕症是一种使人类无法生育的疾病。这种疾病一直afflicting很大一部分人类,包括全世界超过10%的夫妇。”),结合文中提到的infertility(不孕症)和下文中提到的a large percentage of mankind(很大一部分人类)可知,不孕症使很多人很痛苦。划线词最可能意为B选项(使苦恼,使烦恼)。故选B。
    【26题详解】
推理判断题。从第四段最后一句 “After a cycle of IVF, the probability of a couple with infertility problems having a baby is one in five—the same as healthy couples who conceive naturally. ”(经过一个周期的体外受精后,不孕夫妇生孩子的概率是正常夫妇自然受孕的五分之一。)可知,从这篇文章可以推断出A选项(20%的不孕夫妇可以通过试管婴儿生育。)正确。故选A。
    C
Time spent alone during the pandemicled to positive effects on well-being across all ages, new research has found.
The study of more than 2,000 teenagers and adults found that most people experienced benefits from solitude during the early days of the global Covid-19 pandemic. All age groups experienced positive as well as negative effects of being alone. However, the researchers found that descriptions of solitude included more positive effects than negative. On average, well-being scores when participants were alone were 5 out of 7 across all ages, including adolescents aged 13—16.
Some study participants talked about worsening mood or well-being, but most described their experiences of solitude in terms of feeling skilled and feeling self-reliant. 43% of all respondents mentioned that solitude involved activities and experiences of spending time on skills-building and activities, and that was consistent across all ages. Meanwhile, self-connection and reliance on self was a major feature particularly for adults, who mentioned it twice as often as teenage participants.
Dr Netta Weinstein, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Reading said, “The conventional wisdom is that adolescents on the whole found that the pandemic was a negative experience, but we see in our study how components of solitude can be positive. Over those first few months of the pandemic here in the UK, we see that working adults were actually the most likely to mention aspects of worsening well-being and mood, but even those are not as commonly mentioned as more positive experiences of solitude.”
The researchers noted that the findings were taken from one phase of the Covid-19 pandemic during the summer of 2020, and recommended that follow-up data looks at experiences of solitude during challenging periods such as this one, and also more commonplace periods where daily solitude may look and feel different.
    27. What did participants think of solitude?
    A. It was time consuming. B. It involved too much activities.
    C. It mostly decreased well-being. D. It made them more independent.
    28. What information is mainly conveyed in paragraph 4?
    A. Solitude is still beneficial to life despite some negative aspects.
    B. The pandemic led to negative experiences on the whole.
    C. The working adults complained of the decreasing well-being.
D Adolescents in the study always disliked staying alone.
    29. What do the researchers expect of the following-up study?
    A. It’ll be different. B. It’ll be challenging.
C It’ll get more periods involved. D. It’ll focus on data on the pandemic.
    30. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. The Joys of Solitude B. More Solitude, Better Welling-being
    C. Welling-being across All Ages D. More Staying Alone, Less Enjoyment
D 28. A 29. C 30. B
根据第三段中“Some study participants talked about worsening mood or well-being, but most described their experiences of solitude in terms of feeling skilled and feeling self-reliant.(一些研究参与者谈到了恶化的情绪或“幸福感”,但大多数人在描述他们的孤独经历时,都提到了技能和自力更生的感觉)”可知,参与者认为孤独使他们更独立。
根据第四段“Dr Netta Weinstein, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Reading said, “The conventional wisdom is that adolescents on the whole found that the pandemic was a negative experience, but we see in our study how components of solitude can be positive. Over those first few months of the pandemic here in the UK, we see that working adults were actually the most likely to mention aspects of worsening well-being and mood, but even those are not as commonly mentioned as more positive experiences of solitude.”(雷丁大学心理学副教授Netta Weinstein博士说:“传统观点认为,青少年总体上发现这种流行病是一种消极的经历,但我们在研究中看到,独处的成分可以是积极的。在英国大流行的最初几个月里,我们看到,工作的成年人实际上最有可能提到幸福感和情绪恶化的方面,但即使是这些方面,也不像更积极的孤独体验那样经常被提及。”)”可知,第4段主要传达的信息是尽管有一些消极的方面,独处对生活仍然是有益的。故选A。

People of all ages and nationalities are opening Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts to connect with friends, celebrities, and those who share similar interests as them. ___31___ Small businesses and corporations are also using it to develop closer relationships with their fans and attract new customers.
___32___ For starters, it can be an effective way to conduct market research. In the past, companies often spent millions on studies to determine what their customers wanted. However, they often had difficulties locating people who were interested in their products or services. Nowadays social media has simplified this process as many customers will follow or like the companies they purchase products from. Furthermore, online advertising campaigns through social media allow companies to specifically target people who like similar products as the ones they are selling.
___33___ It allows fans and customers to leave comments about companies, their products, or their services. In turn, these companies can evaluate this feedback and respond in a way that shows they truly care.
However, companies shouldn't jump into social media without a carefully-planned strategy, as this can cause more harm than good. A common mistake is putting new hires or outside consultants in charge of social media accounts. ___34___ Another mistake is using conservative, corporate language in posts and updates. On social media, people are looking for personalities they can connect with, so companies shouldn't shy away from using humor or being colorful. Finally, social media accounts should always provide value and other share-worthy content to fans, for that is the primary reason they became followers. ___35___
    A. Social media has swept across the globe.
    B. Social media isn't just for individuals though.
    C. One company called Zippos does this extremely well.
    D. The person controlling these accounts must be knowledgeable.
    E. There are many ways that organizations can benefit from social media.
    F. Social media also gives companies greater control over their brand image.
    G. Only by following these tips, organizations can take their businesses to the next level.
B 32. E 33. F 34. D 35. G

根据后文“Small businesses and corporations are also using it to develop closer relationships with their fans and attract new customers.(小企业和公司也在利用它与粉丝建立更密切的关系,吸引新客户。)”
根据下文“For starters, it can be an effective way to conduct market research.(首先,这可能是进行市场研究的有效方式。)”以及“Furthermore, online advertising campaigns through social media allow companies to specifically target people who like similar products as the ones they are selling.(此外,通过社交媒体开展的在线广告活动允许公司专门针对那些喜欢与他们销售的产品类似的产品的人。)”
根据空后“It allows fans and customers to leave comments about companies, their products, or their services.(它允许粉丝和客户对公司、产品或服务发表评论。)”
根据上文“A common mistake is putting new hires or outside consultants in charge of social media accounts. (一个常见的错误是让新员工或外部顾问负责社交媒体账户。)”可知,让新员工或外部顾问负责社交媒体账户事错误的,所以要说明他们不能很好的处理问题。D项“控制这些账户的人必须知识渊博。”符合语境,说明学识渊博的人正好弥补了新员工所带来的不足,符合语境。故选D。
    【35题详解】
根据段首句“However, companies shouldn't jump into social media without a carefully-planned strategy, as this can cause more harm than good.

65-year-old Mr. Fairfax had retired from teaching. He was very interested in adventure. This time he made an adventure on a sparsely(稀少的)populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked(艰苦跋涉)more than half a mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.
Eyes fixed on the horizon in expectation of another rabbit, Mr. Fairfax stepped on the thin snow on a canal. Suddenly, it collapsed(坍塌)and dropped him four feet to the bottom.
Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Mr. Fairfax was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hit first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun, unloaded it and used it as a crutch(拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the canal but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Mr. Fairfax told himself that if he didn't get himself out of that canal, he wasn't going to have a very good night.
Mr. Fairfax walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. He immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p.m., and it was nearing 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.
Mr. Fairfax focused on crawling to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, hopping was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.

Paragraph 2: However, gleams(微光)of daylight remained—Mr. Fairfax saw the sixth car.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para.1
Mr. Fairfax's dogs had been playing in the field and eventually came up to him. The two dogs surrounded his body to warm him while barking wildly. Mr. Fairfax finally struggled to the fence near the road with the help of the dogs. Despite his exhaustion and painful leg, he still tried to wave down a driver for fear that he might lose consciousness at any time. He waved wildly and shouted loudly, but in vain. When the fifth car passed without stopping, his heart sank in despair.
    Para. 2
However, gleams(微光)of daylight remained-Mr. Fairfax saw the sixth car. Mustering up all his strength and courage, he waved wildly again. Fortunately, this time the car stopped and the driver rolled down the window to ask him what was wrong. After realizing Mr. Fairfax's situation, the driver jumped off, assisting him onto the back seat with his two lovely dogs. With tears welling up in his eyes, Mr. Fairfax expressed his gratitude in a week voice. Finally, he got rescued and cured. From then on, whenever he was confronted with a terrible situation, he would encourage himself with the accident.
