The majority of humans are able to recognize about 1 million different colors. But some people can't recognize this many because of something called colorblindness. If someone is colorblind, that means they can't see as many colors as others, or, in rare cases, can't see any colors at all.
There are three cone-shaped cells at the back of our eyes that allow us to see colors. These cells absorb light waves and send a message to the brain, where the image is processed.
If something is wrong with these cone-shaped cells, this can result in colorblindness.
Thankfully, special color-correcting glasses have already been made to help fix some types of colorblindness. Now, according to new research published in Optics Letters, scientists have brought this solution one step further.
Sharon Karepov and Tal Ellenbogen, engineers from Tel Aviv University in Israel, have found a way to apply this technology to contact lenses (隐形眼镜). This is good news for the millions of people worldwide who suffer from colorblindness.
One of the most common types of colorblindness is red-green colorblindness. People who have this specific type of visual disadvantage have difficulty telling apart the colors red and green. “Problems with distinguishing red from green interrupt simple daily routines such as deciding whether a banana is ripe,” Karepov explained.
Karepov also stressed the importance of applying this finding to create special contact lenses instead of relying on color-correcting glasses.
“Glasses based on this correction concept are commercially available. However, they are significantly heavier than contact lenses.” Karepov continued. “Our contact lenses create a customized, simple and durable way to correct these disadvantages.”
This new research is groundbreaking. In addition to offering those who are colorblind another option, it may lead to solution to other visual impairments.
24. What can cause colorblindness according to the text?
A. Only one type of cone-shaped cell exists in the eyes.
B. Cone-shaped cells cannot process images received.
C. The brain fails to absorb light waves.
D. Cone-shaped cells in the eyes don't work properly.
25.What is the advantage of the special contact lenses over the color-correcting glasses?
A. They are easiet to make and use. B.They are much cheaper and durable.
C. They are much lighter and simpler. D. They can help correct colorblindness.
26. Why is Sharon Karepov and Tal Ellenbogen's finding groundbreaking?
A. It has led to a cure for colorblindness.
B. It has found causes of visual impairments.
C. It could help solve other visual impairments.
D. It has helped to develop glasses to fix visual impairments.
C
For many white-collar workers around the world, the recent pandemic has meant having to. work from home.Their usual office location has been out of bounds. This means different working practices, which have advantages and disadvantages for employees. But the big question is, “Will they ever see their offices again? ”
Home working has made people realize what tasks they can perform at home, rather than enduring a commute to the office to do the same thing. It has given them more time with the family; they've been sleeping better and have saved money by not travelling or buying lunches on the go. And recent research suggests the majority of people working from home are just as productive.
For some people, this could be a permanent arrangement. In the UK, fifty of the biggest employers questioned by BBC, have said they have no plans to return all staff to the office full-time in the near future. Of course, one main reason is that firms couldn't see a way of accommodating large numbers of staff while social distancing regulations were still in place. But BBC also heard from some smaller businesses who are deciding to abandon their offices altogether.
Other bigger companies are also looking at winding up offices to save money as many jobs can be performed remotely. Peter Cheese, head of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, told BBC: “We're at a moment of real change in the world of work, driven by big existential crises.”
But this isn't great news for everyone. Some employees can feel isolated at home, and there's less opportunity to network or learn from other people, especially if they're a new recruit. Also, city centers may suffer most from a change in working habits. Shops and cafes rely on the footfall of office workers, and without them, they face closure. The future is still uncertain, which is why it may be too early to say where our desks will be permanently located. But the office of the future may be your home.
27.What's the good news for companies allowing home working?
A. They don't pay as many salaries as before.
B. They don't have to pay rent for offices.
C.Their employees spend more time with family.
D.Most of their employees work just as productively.
28. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Half employers will not return all staff to the office full-time.
B. Large numbers of staff will lose their job.
C. Some employees won't see their offices again.
D. Firms couldn't deal with social distancing regulations.
29.What attitude does the author hold to the office change?
A.Objective. B.Indifferent. C.Positive. D.Negative.
30. What does the underlined phrase “winding up” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.moving B.transforming C.sharing D.shutting

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Having an older brother comes with plenty of benefits. Big brothers tend to look out for their younger counterparts. Despite the occasional rocky moment here and there , many siblings(兄弟姐妹)enjoy life-long close relationships. 31 It reveals that children with older brothers take longer when it comes to developing language skills.
The study, conducted by a group of researchers in Paris, France, builds upon previous research that having older siblings is associated with poor development of language skills. 32 Only children with an older brother have these linguistic difficulties.
One would assume that children with older brothers would grow up around more conversation on a daily basis, thus speeding up their language development. 33 Researchers studied more than 1,000 children from birth to the age of five-and-a-half years old. Each child's language skills were tested at ages 2, 3, and 5.5, using tests specially designed to measure numerous aspects of language development such as vocabulary and verbal reasoning.
What the research team discovered was significant: children with an older brother had, on average, a two-month delay in their language development compared to studied children with an older sister. 34 One is that older sisters tend to talk more often than older brothers, which would compensate for parents potentially being less present than they were for their first child. The other is that older sisters usually compete with their siblings less than older brothers for their parents' attention.
Up to now, the study's authors say they can't say for certain why children with older brothers have a harder time developing language skills. 35
A. However,a new study finds an interesting disadvantage.
B.No one knows exactly the reason why children with brother8 speak later.
C. But younger children are often ignored by older brothers for some reason.
D.As far as explaining this phenomenon, researchers have proposed two assumptions.
E.Now,researchers say they have refined those findings to come to a more specific conclusion.
F.In the future they would like to investigate if culture or location contributes to this phenomenon.
G.Yet researchers say such children actually take longer than their older brothers to begin developing these skills.

The sound of the helicopter became louder. Hope and Makenna, both 11 years old, were ready. They sprang into action as soon as they heard the helicopter in their Roseville, California, neighborhood.
They heard from the helicopter loudspeaker that the police were seeking volunteers to help search for Belford. She is 97 years old with dementia (痴呆) who had wandered away on September 30 from her residential care center. They needed to find Belford before nightfall, and it was already about 4 pm.
Hope and Makenna, who were hanging out after school in a park near their homes, decided to grab their bikes to help as well. So did Hope's brother, Kashton, and his friend,Logan, both 10 years old.The four of them rode up and down the surrounding streets for more than an hour, joining dozens of other community volunteers who were looking for the woman.Hope's father, Daniel, texted her a photo of Belford so they would be able to identify the woman.
After breaking briefly for dinner, the kids jumped back on their bicycles and did another search in their community. They scanned parking lots and playgrounds. They looked behind bushes and even checked their primary school.
Then,at 6:30 pm just before dusk.Hope saw her: a small and thin elderly woman with pale gray hair in a red button-down shirt and white pants slowly approaching a street corner. If Belford had kept walking, she would have soon ended up on one of the busiest streets in Roseville.
“Look! There she is!”Hope shouted immediately.
