“He'll be over in a minute," one of Saul Klein's colleagues says apologetically, glancing towards a row of glass rooms where figures can be seen deep in conversation. One minute turns into two and then five, and then ten. Finally, Klein bounds over, saying, “Right, shall we start?”

Klein is the kind of person you can imagine this happens a lot. Not because he's rude or forgetful or unreliable. In fact, he's not any of those things.

The Johannesburg-born Klein is an entrepreneur(企业家),often spoken about as the brains behind Lovefilm and an early. Employee at Skypebut his CV(履历) goes beyond that.

For now, he says, the majority of his time is taken up with the companies Local Globe has invested in. “I’m involved on some level with all the companies in the portfolio(投资组合).”What that means in practice is that Klein attends regular meetings, and extraordinary meetings “where we meet with the companies”, and labs “when companies are coming up for important events like fundraising”. Oh, and on top of that, he's also part of every company's WhatsApp group-200 groups to be precise.

“Time is nothing to him, so he'll be replying to messages at 5 o'clock in the morning,” one of his assistants says. But Klein, a father of three children aged 12, 11 and 4, says he actually tries to be “quite strict" with his time. “I've always tried not to do business at breakfast or dinner time. I try to be able to take the kids to school in the morning, and normally be at home for bedtime. Obviously as the kids get older, they don't want you around as much, but that's not the case while they're this age," he says.

This routine isn't just limited to mornings and evenings, Klein says. Ever since he started dating his wife, they both have practiced “lifestyle Shabbat”, “It basically, means from a Friday night to a Saturday night, I'm not looking at emails, I'm not answering my phone, and I avoid driving. We've been doing that for almost 20 years at this point. I've always found that to be a great relief.”

24.Why does Saul Klein often let others wait?

    A.He is rather unreliable.      B.He is a little ill-mannered.

C.He has quite a poor memory.     D.He is too busy with his work.

D.Saul Klein loves changing his work very often.

A.Sparing time for his family.    B.Getting enough sleep every day.

C.Keeping all the promises he has made.  D.Working late at night to finish his work.

27.What does Saul Klein's story tell us?

    A. Employees should put their work first.

B.Busy people can also live a balanced life.

C.Entrepreneurs often ignore their loved ones.

D.Some couples are living a very unhealthy life.

    C

There are already a range of wearable sensors that can provide continuous data about aspects of the wearer's body, such as his heart rate, temperature and blood sugar concentration. These devices are available to health-conscious consumers, but their main application is in the field of medicine, as they allow doctors to closely monitor patients' sensitive biological states. Most sensors fit onto the surface of the skin, but newer designs can actually be implanted beneath it. Shaped like thin lengths of thread, these implantable sensors can be put into muscle tissue, using the same straightforward techniques doctors already use to stitch up(缝合) open wounds. The thread-like sensors are also highly flexible, meaning they bend with the patient's movement, instead of limiting it, and can't be forced out of the position where it is fixed.

Some sensors are coated in an electrically conductive material. The flow of electricity along the thread rises or falls depending on various factors. For example, physical pressure can cause the flow of electricity to become controlled. A low power reading can therefore suggest that too much pressure is being placed on the part of the body where the sensor is located. This can be vital in protecting victims of recent skin and tissue damage. The patient can be warned the instant some movement or posture risks tearing the tender new tissue growing over a wound that has yet to heal fully.

Other threads can remove fluid samples into containers outside the body, so that these samples can be used for biochemical analysis. Compared to traditional methods of collecting fluid samples, not only is this new technique much more effective, but it also involves more convenience for the new doctors, not to mention less discomfort for the patient.

28.What's the characteristic of the new sensor mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.They can be positioned inside a patient's body.

B.They are generally used to repair open wounds.

C.They are appealing to consumers as well as doctors.

D.They can beused by ordinary people without a doctor.

29.What happens if a patient is in danger of damaging a part of his or her body?

A.The sensor moves out of position.

    B.The sensor's power reading increases.

C.Less electricity flows through the sensor.

D.Movement in that area is limited by the sensor.

    30. Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined word "tender" in Paragraph 2?

    A.Medical.    B.Delicate.    C.Damaged.    D.Tough.

31.How do the new sensors assist in biochemical analysis?

    A.They measure a person's blood pressure.

B.They introduce key chemicals into the body.

C.They perform chemical tests inside the body.

D.They remove small amounts of fluid for testing.

    D

African penguins bear the unfortunate nickname “jackass penguins” because they communicate through donkey-like calls, but a new study suggests that their jackass language actually follows the same basic linguistic rules as ours.

In a new study, researchers recorded nearly 600 voices from 28 adult male penguins. The scientists knew from previous research that African penguins talked using three types of sound, similar to human syllables. But the researchers wanted to know whether those “syllables” followed two common linguistic rules.

One of those rules, called Zapf’s law, was presented by linguist George Zipf. It states that the more frequently a word is used in any language, the shorter it tends to be (think of words like “the”, “to” and “of” in English) Previous studies have analyzed more than 1,000 world languages for evidence of Zipfs law, and the rule holds up in all of them.

The other rule, known as the Menzerath-Altmann law, says that the longer a word is, the shorter its syllables are, while shorter words are more likely to have longer syllables. A syllable is a word or a part of a word that has only one vowel. For example, “son" has one syllable and “father” has two syllables. According to the law, the word "onomatopoeia “is made up of six very short syllables, while “couch" is made up of one longer one. Earlier studies have shown that non-human primates(灵长类动物)follow both these rules when they communicate with each otherbut what about  jackas penguins? The researchers in the new study found that the songs of the male jackass penguin follow both Zipf's and Menzerath's laws: The shortest calls tended to be the most common,

and the longest phrases were made up of the shortest syllables.

This jackas sturdy provided the first non-primate evidence that these common linguistic patterns apply to other species in the animal kingdom.

32.Howw does Zipf's law explain the words like "big",“or" and “as"?

A.They let people think of shorter words.

B.They are commonly used and thus short.

C.They are frequently replaced by other words.

D.They have only one meaning and are less important.

33.What does the Menzerath-Altman law show?

A.The link between longer words and shorter words.

B.The link between longer syllables and shorter syllables.

    C. The link between a word's pronunciation and its vowels.

D.The link between a word's length and its syllables' length.

34 What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.The limitation of the study.

    B.The importance of the study.

    C.The development of linguistic patterns.

D.The doubt about animals' language abilities.

35.What can be the best title for this text?

A.Humans and animals share similar sounds.

    B. Jackass penguins make three types of sound.

C.Scientists have made a new discovery about syllables.

    D. African penguins' talk follows the same rules as human speech.
