    A

When you set foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don't see anyone I know” or “please don't talk to me” may run through your mind. I've also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is talk with someone, especially someone new.

Why do we go out of our way to avoid people? Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time? Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new is really a trouble?

Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days browsing Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don't have the courage to actually do in reality.

Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it when they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Above all else, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.

Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don't actually believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.

But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, and make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—a smile is worth a lot.

1.What do we learn about the author?

    A.He likes to be alone.

    B.He feels stressed out lately.

C.He's active in attending social events.

D.He's afraid of talking to others at times.

2.What's the problem of Generation Y in the author's eyes?

A.They rely on the Internet to socialize.

B.They are less confident in themselves.

    C.They have difficulty in communicating.

D.They are unwilling to make new friends.

3.Why do many young people avoid meeting new people?

    A.They think it troublesome.

B.They are busy with their study.

C.They fear to disappoint their old friends.

D.They want to take time to do meaningful work.

4.Why does the author write the text?

A.To tell about the importance of friends.

B.To give tips on how to meet new people.

C.To encourage people to meet new people.

D.To introduce the disadvantages of Generation Y.

    B

Raegan Byrd tries to complete her homework every night. But the high school student in Hartford, Connecticut, has to use her mobile phone to search for the necessary information because she does not have an Internet connection at home.

In May, the US Department of Education (ED) published its findings that the number of homes without access to the Internet has been getting smaller, but 14 percent of homes in city areas and 18 percent of homes in the countryside still do not have Internet connections.

In some states, the problem is much more serious. For example, in the countryside of northern Mississippi, a third of the 294 homes in Maben do not have computers. And close to half have no access to the Internet whether they can pay for it or not.

Sharon Stidham, a mother in Maben, has to take her four boys to the school library at East Webster High School. Her husband works there, so the children can use the Internet for their schoolwork. A signal tower can be seen through the trees from their home, but they could not put aside any money for the Internet.

Research results from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) have shown that students with the Internet at home get much better scores in reading, math and science than the ones without.

Some teachers call this problem “the homework divide”. Jessica Rosenworcel, an NCES member, said, “The so-called homework divide is the cruelest part of the digital age and it is hurting the poor students and creating a big obstacle to their dreams.”

Local communities(社区) have started to help. They made lists of restaurants and other businesses with Wi-Fi places where children are welcome to come and do their homework. And many public libraries have also planned to provide free access for the students next year.

5.What has ED found out in its survey?

A.Students with the Internet at home are doing better at school.

B.Compared with city areas, 4% more homes in the countryside don't have Internet access.

C.About 33% of the students in Mississippi do not have the Internet at home.

D.An increasing number of students do not have access to the Internet at home.

6.Why does Sharon Stidham take her sons to the library in the East Webster High School?

A.Her husband is a teacher in the library.

B.She does not want to pay for the Internet at home.

C.She wants her sons to study in a better environment.

D.Her sons have to use the Internet to do their schoolwork.

7.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “obstacle” in Paragraph 6?

    A.Block. B.Help.

    C.Goal. D.Chance.

8.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.Local communities are called on to take actions.

B.Libraries have opened their doors to the students.

C.Restaurants have volunteered to take in the children.

D.Help is coming from the public and the local communities.

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia (百科全书), is the largest encyclopedia ever. An encyclopedia is a collection of informative articles about various things. Encyclopedias used to be printed as books. 1

“Wiki” is an Internet term that means “a website that can be edited by the public”. It comes from “wikiwiki”, a Hawaiian word for “quick”. Two Americans, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, created Wikipedia in 2001. 2 It has about 6 million articles in 300 languages and is visited by billions of people each day, who want to find information just about anything—science, math, languages, art, culture, and company histories. There are articles on sports stars, too, and even long-forgotten soap operas from the 1970s.

3 Except for a small number of pages, anyone can edit articles, anonymously (匿名地) or with a user account, and registered users can create their own articles. Editing is unpaid, although Wikipedia does employ a small staff. Wikipedia is freely available to anyone with an Internet connection. Its founders hoped that the model would make use of humanity's collective knowledge.

4 Many Wikipedia pages contain errors, although the organization has a content review system that works to fix this problem. Several studies have concluded that Wikipedia is as accurate as most print encyclopedias. Indeed, a 2005 report in the journal Nature found it to be only slightly less reliable than Encyclopedia Britannica.

5 It does not rely on advertising. Instead, all of its funds (资金) come from donations. Perhaps more importantly, the number of its volunteer editors is shrinking.

Despite these difficulties, Jimmy Wales says he will still stick to his dream. He has big plans for the future. He wants Wikipedia available in all of the world's languages.

    A.Today, Wikipedia faces many challenges.

B.Wikipedia employs an open editing model.

C.It allows users to get information within seconds.

D.It is now the fifth-most visited website on the Internet.

E.Most of its editors are volunteers.

F.Now, they are mostly found online.

G.However, some people doubt the accuracy of Wikipedia's content.

Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don't actually believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble.

Holding a conversation with someone new是主语,agreeing...being...是由and连接的两个并列的宾语部分;that引导定语从句,修饰先行词things;they want you to be是省略了关系词的定语从句,修饰先行词someone,you think在此处是插入语。

14 percent of homes in city areas and 18 percent of homes in the countryside still do not have Internet connections可知,农村家庭没有网络连接的百分比比城市家庭要多出4%,故选B项。

Her husband works there, so the children can use the Internet for their schoolwork.

The so-called homework divide is the cruelest part of the digital age and it is hurting the poor students and creating a big obstacle to their dreams.

Local communities have started to help. And many public libraries have also planned to provide free access for the students next year.
