A road is a bridge between two places. The Silk Road has been a bridge between East and West for more than 2,000 years.
But did you know that the Silk Road is not a single route? It is actually a series of trade and culture transmission( 传送)routes. It started to take shape during the Western Han Dynasty. The trade route started from the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province and ended in Eastern Europe near today's Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. The Silk Road was about 6,500 kilometers long. It went across one-fourth of the planet. The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. In addition to silk, jade, tea and iron also went west to Rome. From the West came glass, gems, and foods like carrots and sesame.
The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. In addition to trade, knowledge about science, arts and literature, as well as craftsmanship and technology, was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other. Today, various historical sites along the Silk Road are popular travel destinations, such as the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an and Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Gansu. A new train line, the New Orient Express, is running from Beijing across the Silk Road.

Why do you feel encouraged when your teacher gives you a smile? How do you know your mother is angry when she frowns? In both cases, the person is telling us something not with words, but with facial expressions.
Facial expressions are one or more movements on a person’s face, such as frowning, raising one’s eyebrows, and nose and lip movements. They express people’s feelings.
Scientists at Oxford University have shown that humans have 80 muscles on their faces. These muscles can create more than 7,000 facial expressions. However, there are five main kinds of facial expressions that are common in all cultures: happiness, sadness, surprise, fear and anger. Facial expressions are very important to communication. One study at UCLA, in the US, showed that in most conversations, over 93 percent of the communicating is done without speaking.
If people can read facial expressions, they may be better at knowing what other people are feeling, so they can understand them better. Someone who does not enjoy a certain type of food usually will make a face when they see or taste it. A frown means worry or anger. Raised eyebrows and open eyes show surprise.
However, there are some taboos for reading people’s facial expressions. For example, it is not a good idea to stare at someone for a long time while you are reading his or her facial expressions. They may think you are rude.
26. Which of the following is TRUE according to the story?
A. No facial expressions are the same in different cultures.
B. Our face muscles can create 80 facial expressions.
C. Reading facial expressions can help people understand each other.
D. You can stare at someone while reading his or her facial expressions.
27. When someone feels surprised, he or she may________.
A. make a face B. frown
C. give you a smile D. raise the eyebrows and open the eyes

A. types of facial expressions B. how facial expressions are created

A teacher stood on the top of a ladder truck It was five stories high. She held an egg that was attached ( 系 ) to several balloons and was about to drop it. The students below fixed their eyes on her and held their breath. Would the egg survive the drop?
Welcome to Kelly Coombe’s science class at Marsh Junior High in Chico, California. Coombe organized this activity to help students better understand the laws of physics.
She divided the 34 students into 17 teams of two people each. Each team designed a structure that would prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from 50 feet (15.25 meters) high.
The students used different materials to protect the eggs. The typical materials included cotton balls, drinking straws (吸管), cardboard, socks, and balloons.
Josh Addington and Bowen Jiang thought of a creative idea. They built a pyramid out of drinking straws and put the egg into a “capsule (胶囊)” on the top of the pyramid. Then they tied a helium-filled balloon (氢气球) to the top to keep the device moving in the right direction, and put a water balloon at the bottom to allow the device to lightly land on the ground.
“Our egg survived!” Jiang proudly told The Enterprise Record. But not all of the eggs were so lucky. As Coombe dropped the eggs, some of them fell like stones and smashed on the ground. About half of the eggs survived.
Coombe said the project was a “great way for kids to get excited about science”.
29. What was the purpose of the egg-dropping activity?
A. To protect an egg from breaking when dropped. B. To design stronger houses.
C. To help students understand the laws of physics. D. To break lots of eggs at the same time.

If you have ever talked to doctors in the hospitals, you may find that many of them are quite serious and speak in a range of terms that may be difficult to understand. But Zhang Wenhong, the leader of the Shanghai team of experts in the treatment of novel coronavirus pneumonia, is one of the exceptions. He caught the public’s attention for his recent frank and funny speech.
Zhang’s words first went viral ( 走 红 ) on the internet after he said in late January that he had dispatched ( 派 遣 ) doctors and nurses who are members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to frontline hospitals to treat coronavirus cases.
“When becoming CPC members, we vowed (发誓) that we would always prioritize (优先考虑) people’s interests ... in the face of difficulties,” Zhang said. “This is the moment we live up to the pledge (誓言). All CPC members must rush to the frontline. No bargaining.”
Such a hardcore declaration of his attitude won widespread applause among internet users.
“A person’s morals are witnessed most in a critical situation. Nothing could win more recognition from the people than the down-to-earth behavior of the CPC members,” said Yang Haiyan, a 32-year-old Shanghai resident.
One month later, when Zhang advised local residents to reduce the risk of spreading the virus by staying at home, he said in Shanghai dialect: “If you don’t stop seeing friends, you will see them again in the ICU.”
Though chased by the media, Zhang described himself as a medical worker who must speak out now, but will return to keeping a low profile after the outbreak ends.
“ I spoke because of the fear among the public, owing to limited knowledge of the contagion (传染病),” said Zhang on Feb 26. “However, once the curtain of this coronavirus incident falls, it may be hard to find me. I’ll just hide myself in a corner, studying complicated patient cases and doing some reading, silently.”
32. What has made Zhang Wenhong so popular online?
A. The way he treats his patients. B. His honest and humorous speech.
C. His pledge to fight against the virus. D. His broad knowledge of the novel coronavirus.

VII. 任务型阅读

Forgot your password or your ID? Well, you'll never forget your face. Using your face as your ID is quick and convenient. You could take the subway or board a flight with just your face alone. This is how facial recognition(人脸识别)works. It has also been used to catch criminals. Taylor Swift even used the technology to identify stalkers (识别跟踪者) at her concerts.
In China, facial recognition systems have been used in many areas. In Zhengzhou, people can now get on the subway by using facial recognition technology. They just need to link their online payment systems to the subway's smartphone app. Students at Peking University can pass through the school's gate by scanning their faces.
However many citizens are worried about the collection and use of this information by governments and companies. “I feel uncomfortable because I don't know how the company is using my facial details or whether they will be leaked (泄漏),”Feng Yi, a tourism company employee, said. Leaks are a problem because there is a long history of companies failing to protect user data. When someone steals your personal information, you can change your bank card and password, but can you change your face when your facial information is stolen?
