Joseph Beer noticed dozens of dirty street signs while out on his daily walks with his mom Lisa.

The 15-year-old, who has autism(自闭症), soon decided he wanted to clean up the streets. With the help of Dad, he fixed a trailer to the back of his bike, and started riding around the streets near his house. The youth has cleaned street signs that have been left almost unreadable.

Joseph's efforts have not gone unnoticed by the people of Chatteris and surrounding towns-particularly a driving instructor who got in touch to thank him for uncovering hidden road signs. One kind neighbor, who Joseph's family did not even know, was so impressed by his clean-up of the town, that she set up a Go Fund Me page to reward him. The fundraising campaign, which has now ended, raised almost1, 000 in donations.

Joseph's mom Lisa says that her son has been working really hard almost every day. "I'm absolutely blown away with everything he's done. He comes back absolutely dirty, and still carrying the bucket of water, which by the end of the day has turned black from all the cleaning he's done. Then he'll take a bath and get ready to do it all again the next day."

He started sharing photos on his Facebook, too, and reports, "I've found it really satisfying to look at the 'before' and 'after' pictures, and see the obvious improvements I've made to my hometown."

His mother says he's got an "incredible heart", and now he wants to share the money that was raised for him. Joseph is donating to the local food bank, "for families who are struggling to feed themselves at the moment".

    27. Where is this text most likely from?

When the conversation turns to clean, renewable energy, the talk almost always is about sun and wind. No one ever brings up another natural power source-snow. Unbelievable as it may sound, falling snow carries an electrical charge. Scientists have known this for decades, but until recently they couldn't figure out how to turn it into electricity.

Two UCLA scientists have invented a device that uses silicone(硅胶)to catch the electrical charge from snow and create electricity. Their tool is small, thin and flexible, inexpensive, and needs no batteries. "We have a great source of energy ready to be collected," said Maher El-Kady, a researcher in chemistry at UCLA and co-inventor of the device. "And we can do that using materials that are already produced in mass quantities."

To be sure, their invention is still a "proof of concept" experiment for now, since its power output remains low. But the researchers believe its potential could be limitless. "There is room for development and further improvements by revisiting the device structure and operating method," El-Kady said.

Snow builds up a charge on its surface because of the way water molecules(分子)order themselves as they turn into snowflakes. He said, "We thought, 'Why not bring another material with the opposite charge to get these electrons(电子)to create electricity?' After trying a countless number of materials, we found that silicone produces more charge with snow than any other material."

The scientists see numerous future uses. It could power a wearable tool that tracks the performance of cold-weather athletes. The device could also be included into solar panels, kicking in extra power during snowstorms.

They predicted that one of its most important applications will be its eventual use as in a miniaturized(微缩的)weather station that could monitor snow in real time, providing data about snowfall rate, accumulation, wind direction and speed. "Every time snow hits the surface of the device, it produces electricity," El-Kady said.

"Technically, we made a weather station, but one that is self-powered," he added. "Unlike conventional weather stations that are huge in size and often rely on batteries for power, our device can work endlessly."

    28. Why does the author mention sun and wind in paragraph 1?

    A. To make comparisons.        B. To introduce the topic.

    C. To support the argument.      D. To provide examples.

    29. What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 1 probably refer to?

    A. How to turn snow into electricity.           B. There is a lot of clean energy in nature.

    C. Snow might be next clean energy source.     D. We should find other natural power sources.

    30. What does paragraph 5 mainly focus on?

    A. The features of the device.        B. The applications of the device.

    C. The limitations of the device.      D. The working principle of the device.

    31. What can we know about the miniaturized weather station?

    A. It is already in use.                  B. It relies on battery for power.

    C. It is small in size and self-powered.     D. It is similar to conventional weather stations.

    D

Humans have explored space beyond Earth's atmosphere for over half a century. When astronauts explore the vast area of outer space, they need to wear high-tech spacesuits to protect them from the dangerous conditions of the universe.

A spacesuit is made up of nearly a half dozen different components(部件)and can have up to 16 layers, according to NASA. From start to finish, it can take up to four hours for an astronaut to dress up, said Cathleen Lewis, leader of international space programs. Before going on a spacewalk, astronauts must check each piece of equipment and make sure they have enough important supplies, such as oxygen and water.

The astronauts on the Artemis missions, NASA's next program to send the first woman and the first person of color to the moon, will wear the latest spacesuit, known as xEMU. One of its main components is the cooling garment, said Richard Rhodes, leader of xEMU pressure garment development at NASA. The garment is made of tubes that circulate water around the astronaut, regulating body temperature and removing extra heat as they complete their work. Each spacesuit has a portable life-support component, which includes a water tank for the cooling garment, carbon dioxide removal system and more.

The original spacesuits used during the Apollo missions were less flexible than the ones today. Fortunately, spacesuits have come a long way since then and have a more flexible structure. On the outside of a spacesuit, there are colored stripes(条纹)unique to each suit. This is how astronauts can tell who is in each suit when out in space, Lewis said. This tried-and-true system will be used for the Artemis spacesuits.

Rhodes said the biggest challenge for the Artemis suits is making sure they are upgraded for lunar exploration. The suits need to be "light enough to support the lunar mission and strong enough to protect the astronaut while working in the very hazardous lunar environment,"  he said.

    32. What is the special feature of xEMU?

    A. It is less flexible.           B. It can not wear easily.

    C. It can protect astronauts.     D. It has a special cooling garment.

    33. What are colored stripes on the outside of a spacesuit used for?

    A. To test a new system.                  B. To show the astronaut's nationality.

    C. To distinguish who is in the spacesuit.     D. To indicate which country made the spacesuit.

    34. What does the underlined word "hazardous" in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A. Cold.     B. Dangerous.      C. Noisy.     D. Unstable.

    35. What's the best title of the text?

    A. Brave Astronauts in NASA

    B. The Development of Spacesuits

    C. Spacesuits Make Space Exploration Possible

    D. NASA Designs New Spacesuits for Next Mission

    第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

As the saying goes, "Your attitude determines your altitude." The type of attitude you approach life with will significantly impact the level of success you will or will not have.   36

    Attitude of Positivity

Positivity has a direct relationship with possibilities. People who are negative tend to have a fixed mindset, and are closed off to all of the possibility that exists in life.   37   On the contrary, when someone has a positive outlook and attitude, they are much more likely to have a growth mindset and are open to the abundance that exists within the world.

    Attitude of Gratitude

Some people grow up not seeing any models of success in their immediate environment. They are also fed limiting stories, from those closest to them, about their inability to ever be able to create a great life for themselves.   38   And those limiting stories may puts them into a state of negativity. If you're not careful, comparison will take your life apart. That's why an attitude of gratitude is so important. It takes you out of focusing on what you don't have. It helps you to focus on all that you do have.

    Attitude of Greatness

39   Because of the need to survive experienced by our ancestors, our minds naturally have a bent towards the negative. Although we don't have to worry about a saber tooth tiger jumping out of a bush anymore, our brains are still wired that way. So we have to consciously choose to be positive.

Your attitude is of great importance. Don't try to fight against that truth.   40

    A. Don't let negative mindset disturb you.

    B. You can't expect luck always favors you.

    C. Negativity and a victim mindset go hand in hand.

    D. Accept it, and allow it to guide you on a daily basis.

    E. You are supposed to choose to have a good attitude.

    F. So, they grow up with a fixed mindset about their potential.

    G. Let's look at a few must-have attitudes that you need in your life.
