College student Casey Fischer went to her regular coffee shop for a drink. Little did she realize, this coffee break would be far different from any other. It would be an experience that would change her life forever.
Casey noticed a man by himself, who appeared to be picking things up off the ground, but she couldn’t tell exactly what his purpose was until she looked a little closer. To her heartbreak, she realized that he was gathering any dropped change he could find and putting it in his pocket. She decided to bless the homeless stranger with a hot meal that morning. She then invited him to sit at her table for a conversation.
Over the breakfast Casey provided him, the homeless man opened up about his life story and how he ended up where he was. “His name was Chris. He told me a lot about how people are usually very mean to him because he’s homeless, how drugs turned him into the person he hated, he lost his mom to cancer, he never knew his dad and he just wants to be someone his mom would be proud of,” Casey said.
Eventually Casey realized she had to head back to her classes. Chris told her to hold on for just one moment. He then picked up a piece of paper, wrote a short note on it, smiled and gave it to her. After Casey and Chris had said their goodbyes, she opened up the note and was alarmed at what it said. “I wanted to kill myself today. Because of u I now do not. Thank u, beautiful person,” Chris wrote.
Thanks to Casey’s kindness, going out of her way to not just buy a meal for someone in need, but actually sit down with that person and listen, some real change had occurred and one man went from suicidal to hopeful. All it takes is a cup of coffee and small conversation.

A. Out of curiosity. B. Out of sympathy.
C. To make friends with him. D. To stop him from killing himself.

26. Why did Chris tell Casey to hold on for a moment?
A. Because he wanted to pay back the money.
B. Because he wanted to keep in touch with her.
C. Because he wanted to express his thanks to her.
D. Because he wanted to do something in return for her.
27. Which is the best title for the text?
A. An honourable college student B. Lending a hand to the homeless

It seems clear that our working lives have a major influence on our mental health. We spend lots of time working hard, after all. A new study shows that if you’re feeling wretched as a result of your workplace, you’re certainly not alone.
People who work in unfriendly environments—identified by poor management practices, bullying and a failure to consider employees’ mental health—are three times more likely to suffer from depression (抑郁), says a research.
The year-long Australian population study discovered a link between working long hours and depression, and noted that men are more likely than women to become depressed if their workplace doesn’t care about their mental health.
Lead author Dr Amy Zadow said, “The study shows that companies that fail to reward or acknowledge (承认) their employees for hard work and press unreasonable demands on workers are placing their employees at a much greater risk of depression.”
The risks of these kinds of working environments go beyond the individual (个体). If employees are unhappy, mistreated or burnt out, they can’t focus on their tasks and will therefore be less productive. It’s clear that bosses need to care more about workers’ mental health—especially following the great stresses during the COVID-19 outbreak.
“Many of us dislike our work not because it is not proper work for us, but because of the politics we face every day in our work environment. If we can agree some shifts or if we could have a role in somehow changing the politics, we might feel happier,” says psychotherapist (精神治疗医师) Serge Behrens. “Depression affects over 260 million people worldwide and causes many people to take their own lives. Therefore, it is important that companies or organizations provide the employees with a homely and happy working atmosphere.”
28. What does the underlined word “wretched” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Confused. B. Nervous. C. Doubtful. D. Uncomfortable.
29. Which of the following leads to depression according to the study?
A. Failing to be rewarded for hard work. B. Doing a job in the management field.
C. Working together with depressed men. D. Doing a demanding and challenging job.
30. What do Serge Behrens’ words suggest?
A. People should take up proper work.
B. Employees’ work environment should be improved.
C. Each employee should have a role to play in the workplace.
D. More and more employees are enjoying a homely and happy working atmosphere.
31. Who is the text most probably written for?
A. Workers. B. Researchers. C. Employers. D. Doctors.
D
With nearly 40 plays and over 150 sonnets to his credit, William Shakespeare is considered one of the world’s greatest writers. But should Shakespeare get the credit? That is the question that some historians and scholars have posed since the mid-19th century.
Some people believe that Shakespeare didn’t write the plays that bear his name. Shakespeare’s critics (评论家) include several famous people, such as Orson Welles, Sigmund Freud, Mark Twain and Charlie Chaplin.
Historical documents of Shakespeare’s life are quite hard to find. Despite searches by historians over the years, no one has ever found any handwritten notes by Shakespeare.
Shakespeare was born in 1564 as a commoner (平民) who was educated at a free school. With such a humble (卑微的) background and without an advanced education, some people believe Shakespeare couldn’t have written so well about complex political and legal matters.
The first time it was suggested that Shakespeare might not be the author of his works was in 1848. Over the last century, over 70 other people have been suggested as the. “true” author of Shakespeare’s works, including Francis Bacon and Christopher Marlowe. However, the favorite candidate (候选人) as the “true” Shakespeare has been Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl (伯爵) of Oxford. His position as the Earl of Oxford would have given him the necessary knowledge of life in the English court that some people believe the “real” Shakespeare must have had.
William Shakespeare’s supporters, however, point out that some of Shakespeare’s most famous works were published after Edward de Vere’s death in 1604. They also note that Shakespeare’s name is on all of his works. And some writers at that time wrote reviews of his works and mentioned him by name as one of the best writers of his era.
Without a breakthrough discovery of historical documentation, the Shakespeare authorship debate will likely continue into the future. No matter which side of the debate you fall on, you can still enjoy the many fantastic works of Shakespeare...whoever he may be!
32. What makes some people believe others wrote Shakespeare’s plays?
A. Shakespeare was too busy to write so many works.
B. Shakespeare did not receive a very good education.
C. There are few historical documents of Shakespeare’s life.
D. Some of the plays were published before Shakespeare was born.
33. Who was believed to be the most likely author of Shakespeare’s works?
A. Orson Welles. B. Christopher Marlowe. C. Sigmund Freud. D. Edward de Vere.
34. What evidence is there that Shakespeare wrote his own plays?
A. There is the name of Shakespeare on these plays.
B. Shakespeare was well-known for these plays in his lifetime.
C. Shakespeare had a good knowledge of life in the English court.
D. Lots of famous people at the time spoke highly of Shakespeare’s plays.
35. What’s the author’s attitude towards the argument?
A. He firmly believes that Shakespeare wrote his own plays.
B. He thinks that the plays were not written by Shakespeare.
C. He is uncertain whether Shakespeare wrote his own plays.
D. He cares about who really wrote Shakespeare’s plays.

Wondering how to help your children with homework—or how to get them to do it without a struggle? Here’s how.
Don’t do the homework for your child. Most teachers use homework to find out what the child knows. 36 Instead, they do want parents to make sure homework is completed and review any mistakes to see what can be learned from them.
Set up a good space to work. 37 But keep in mind that each child may work differently; some will do their work at the kitchen table and others at their desks in their rooms.
38 “You should find the ways your child likes to study. For example, some kids will learn spelling words by writing them out, others by closing their eyes and picturing them and saying them aloud," advises teacher Susan Becker. “The sound environment is also important,” adds Susan. “Some kids may want to listen to music—they are helped by being in the middle of sound. 39 So switch off the TV and the iPod when your child does homework. And the computer, too, unless it’s being used for research.”
Keep in mind that it’s their homework, not yours, but stay close by in case you are needed. It is recommended that a parent should be reading nearby while the child is studying because then you both are doing your educational work together.
40 If your child needs extra help or truly doesn’t understand something, let the teacher know. Write on the homework, “done with parental help”, or write a separate note.
A. Find out how your child studies best.
B. However, others need absolute quiet.
C. They do not want parents to do their children’s homework.
D. All children need the same thing: a clean, well-lit location.
E. It is important for parents to be active in their kids’ education.
F. Make sure your child can always ask a question and get an answer.
G. Inform the teacher if you have given your child a lot of homework help.

第二节 书面表达
One possible version:
Dear Lucas,
Glad to know that you and your parents are coming to our city for a visit this Christmas holiday. To make your stay here safe and comfortable, I’d like to give you some advice.
Unlike the warm and wet climate in Britain, it is freezing cold here in winter. So you’re recommended to take some heavy clothes with you. Secondly, watch out for passing vehicles while in China, as cars go on the right here, contrary to that in Britain. The good news is that we Chinese are warm and friendly, so you needn’t worry too much about Chinese customs. Just do as the Chinese while in China.
Looking forward to seeing you here.
Yours,
Li Hua

64. but/yet 考查连词。前一分句与后一分句之间意义上是转折关系,故用连词but/yet连接。
65. based 考查非谓语动词。be based on是习惯搭配,意思是“根据……;以……为基础”;这里用的是其过去分词短语作状语。
66. warmth 考查词性转换。空格中所填单词在句中作介词like的宾语,需用warm的名词形式。
67. ones 考查代词。这里ones指poems。
68. that/which 考查定语从句。关系代词that/which指代先行词art project,引导定语从句,并在从句中作主语。

70. will come 考查动词时态。由时间状语“in the next two years”可知,这里说的是对将来的展望,故用一般将来时。

Did you study flowers in college or something?
W: No, my family has a large garden at home, and it is sort of a family hobby.
Text 2
W: That’s serious sunburn you’ve got during the holiday, Sam.
M: I know. We had a lot of fun in the water and played beach volleyball.
Text 3
W: Hello?
M: Hi, this is Jane speaking. I’ve something to tell you.
W: It is dinner time now. I’ll call you back in half an hour, Okay?
Text 4
M: Let me get you a chair.
W: Thank you, but I’ve just asked the waiter to get me one.
M: Allow me to get you a drink, then.
W: Thank you again, but look, Tom’s bringing me one now.

M: Hello, Alice. My wife and I have just come back from Paris. Here is a gift for you.
W: That’s very kind of you. Come on in and have a cup of tea, please. We bought some wonderful Japanese tea during our Christmas trip there.
M: Great! Tea is my favorite drink, you know.
Text 6
W: Hello, Susana speaking.
M: Hi, it’s John. I’m glad you are there. It’s about our meeting on Monday morning. I’m afraid I can’t make it now.
W: What happened?
M: My boss asked me to go to an important talk. I cannot be absent from it.
W: That’s OK, but we need to find another date.
M: That’s why I called. I could manage on the following day. How about you?
W: I won’t be available until Wednesday afternoon. Is that fine with you?
M: Yes.
Text 7
M: Hi. My sister and I are here for a vacation and we’d like to rent a car.
W: All right. Is that for a week?
M: No. It’ll be for ten days altogether.
W: Okay. I have a nice large car available.
M: Well, there are just two of us, so we don’t need such a big car.
W: I see. Just you and your sister. Will both of you be driving?
M: No, just me. She doesn’t have a license.
W: Okay. I think I have a nice, new, medium-sized car that just came in. How’s that?
M: Sounds great.
W: And where will you drop it off when you finish? In our company?
M: Well, I’ll drop it off behind Green Hotel near the airport, if that’s okay.
W: That’s fine.
Text 8
W: Hi, John.
M: Hi, honey. Good news! All my work here will be finished by Thursday.
W: Oh, that’s wonderful. I miss you so much.
M: Me too. I’ll get home on Friday.
W: I just can’t wait to see you. And the kids will be very excited. What time exactly?
M: 3:50 in the afternoon. Can you come and meet me at the airport?
W: Oh, it’s too bad. I’ll be in the parent-teacher meeting at that time.
M: Don’t worry. Let me call my brother Jim and see if he’ll be free.
W: You don’t have to. My sister Helen is here on vacation and she can pick you up.
M: That will be fine.
W: I’ll be home around 5. And we can have a big family dinner together.
M: Fantastic! See you Friday then.
W: See you and have a nice trip.
Text 9
M: Stop, your driving license, please.
W: Here! Listen to me, officer. It wasn’t my fault. It was that dog.
M: What dog? I didn’t notice any dog.
W: It’s true, sir. There was a dog in the street. If there weren’t for the dog, I wouldn’t have almost hit you.
M: How fast were you going?
W: Well, about 40 mph or less. I was driving very slowly.
M: 40 mph? Don’t you know the speed limit here is 30 mph? All right. That’ll be one hundred dollars.
W: Wait! What do you mean by saying “one hundred dollars”?
M: You’ll be fined one hundred dollars. Speeding and driving after drinking. You can’t fool me with that smell from your mouth.

Hello. Welcome to the programme. Have you ever imagined sitting in a car that can drive all by itself? Actually, with the rapid development of modern science and technology, the self-driving car is becoming a reality on busy streets.
Starting in the 1970s, scientists in Germany, the US and other developed countries began the research into self-driving cars. In 1992, China successfully developed its first driverless car.
The first driverless car made by Google came out in 2009. According to a report by Google, the world-famous search engine, its driverless cars have travelled more than 700,000 miles on roads so far. There are cameras on the top of the car, which allow the computer in the car to draw a 3D map of the surroundings. In addition, Google says that its self- driving cars can discover hundreds of separate objects at the same time. As a result, there will be far fewer traffic accidents caused by careless driving.
However, self-driving cars are much too expensive right now. Scientists across the world are doing their best to bring down the costs.
