I’d gone snowboarding with my brother, but what we lacked was skill, so we made up for it in enthusiasm(热情). That day, fresh snow falling, we were in high spirits, I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, thinking I would soon catch him up.
I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance and then ran into a large tree.
It was like hitting a wall. I knew immediately that my back was broken and quickly realized the situation was serious. Nobody would be coming past. There was no phone signal. It was snowing and cold. If I waited, I would probably be saved in the end. But the chance of freezing(冻)to death before that happened was too high for me to risk staying put.
I tried to stand but fell down with great pain. I managed to get the board off from my feet and moved it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and used the board to slowly slide my body down the tree-lined slope(斜坡)。
It took about two hours before a skier found me. The rescue team came, with my brother arriving shortly afterwards.
A helicopter took me to hospital. I had broken one of my backbones, so I had an operation. The lasting pain was unbearable, but it wasn’t as bad as seeing the pain and worry I put my family through.
The recovering road was difficult, but I was lucky. Gradually, I was able to walk, then swim, and then cycle and run. I haven’t been back to the slopes yet, but it might happen someday. Anyway, enthusiasm remains forever.
    24. What led to the accident that happened to the writer?
    A. Losing his balance when speeding up.
    B. Suffering from the cold weather.

    D. Seeing nobody coming past.

    25. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. I was unable to move with coldness.
    B. I couldn’t stand the great pain in my back.
    C. Staying there waiting, I would die of coldness.
    D. If I stayed there waiting, I would be probably saved.
    26. How did the writer feel about his parents’ worry over him?
    A. Eager B. Sorry C. Confused D. Relaxed
    27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. He will recover fully without any difficulty.
    B. He will develop interest in other sports.
    C. He will avoid going snowboarding again.
    D. He will stay enthusiastic about snowboarding.
    C
Most people have map apps on their phones that can show their location and guide them to where they want to go. But how do these apps know your location at any time or place? They find you by using satellite navigation(satnav)systems(卫星导航系统).
A satnav system uses groups of satellites to find the user’s location. This location information is then sent to a receiver, such as a smartphone.
The first satnav system was the Global Positioning System(GPS),which belongs to the United States. First used in 1964, the system is the world’s leading satnav system. But China’s satnav system, Beidou, has overtaken(超过)GPS in size, Japan’s Nikkei Asian Review reported.
China sent Beidou’s first navigation satellite into space in 2000. China also became the third country to build a satnav system after the US and Russia, People’s Daily reported. As of right now, over 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East are using the Beidou system.
With its world-leading technology, Beidou is leading Chinese citizens to a better life by playing important roles in different areas, according to Xinhua News Agency.
For example, as of April, over 6.2 million vehicles(车辆)in China were using Beidou for navigation, according to a report on the Beidou system’s building and development.
At the newly-built Beijing Daxing International Airport, Beidou has been used to keep track of(追踪)loading and unloading vehicles indoors and outdoors. When the airport fully opens, each baggage cart will have Beidou navigation equipment to help passengers get their luggage faster.
28.What do map apps depend on to find a user’s location?
    A.satellites B.computers C.receivers D.smartphones
29.Which country built the world’s second satnav system?
    A.The US. B.Japan. C.China. D.Russia.
30.What do we know about the Beidou system?
A.Its first group of satellites was sent into space in 2001.
B.It offers services to other countries.
C.The number of satellites it uses is the same as GPS.
D.It has become the world’s best satnav system.
31.What do the last two paragraphs tell us?
A.Why most vehicles are using the Beidou system.
B.How Beidou will improve service quality at airports.
C.How the Beidou system is being used.
D.Who will be interested in using Beidou.

The earliest newspapers started in ancient Rome. They were handwritten news sheets. The first printed newspapers appeared in China during the Tang dynasty, which were printed from carved wooden blocks. Modern papers first appeared in Venice, Italy in the middle of the 14th century. The newspapers of today, with advertising and a mixture of political, economic, and social news and comments, were started in Britain in the mid-18th century.
The main function of newspapers is to report news. Many newspapers also provide special information to readers, such as weather reports and television timetables. They also provide comments on politics, economics, arts and culture. Almost all newspapers depend on advertising to make money. Nearly six out of ten adults in the United States and Canada read a newspaper every day. Seven out of ten read a paper each weekend. Readers search newspapers for detailed background information and analysis. This is what television and radio news reports seldom offer. Newspapers tell readers what happened, and they also help readers understand what caused an event and how it will affect the world around them.
The workers at large newspaper companies work under a lot of stress to bring news to readers as soon as possible. Reporters, photographers, artists, and editors collect articles in just a few hours. Page designers select articles, photos, advertisements, and eye-catching headlines to make the pages, and then rush their work to the printer. Printing workers may work overnight around printing presses to churn out more than 60,000 copies per hour.
32.Modern newspapers were first made in ________.
    A.China B.Ancient Rome C.Italy D.Britain
33.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
    A. Jobs related to newspapers.

D.The fast speed of newspaper production.
34.We can infer everything from the passage EXCEPT that ________.
    A.few newspapers have no advertising
B.many adults in America read newspapers every day
C.people can read about different issues in newspapers
D.newspapers will become less popular as TV develops
35.The phrase “churn out” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
    A.press B.produce C.publish D.sell

We can all have a bad night of sleep and that’s perfectly normal, but how could we try to improve both the quantity and the quality of our sleep? 36 .
Let’s start with regularity. 37 . Regularity is king, and it will actually help your sleep, whether it’s the weekday or the weekend or even if you have had a bad night of sleep. Many of us use an alarm to wake up but very few of us use a to-bed alarm, and that’s something that can be helpful.
38 . It turns out that your brain and your body need to drop their temperature by about 1°C in order to begin sleep and then to stay asleep. And this is the reason why you will always find it easier to fall asleep in a room that it is too cold than too hot.
The third tip is darkness. We need darkness especially in the evening to produce a hormone called melatonin(褪黑素). In the last hour before going to bed, try to stay away from all of those computer screens and phones. 39 . You’d actually be quite surprised at how sleepy that can make you feel.
The final tip is to walk it out. Don’t stay in bed awake for long periods of time. And the general rule is that if you have woken up and you can’t get back to sleep after 25 minutes, 40 . And you can go and do something else. Only return to bed when you are sleepy. And in that way, gradually, your brain will relearn that relation that your bed is this place of sound and continuous sleep.
    A. Next, keep the room cool.
    B. Turn off the lights in your room.
    C. Here are four tips for better sleep.
    D. the recommendation is to get out of bed.
    E. Visit your doctor if you have a sleep problem.
    F. Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time.
    G. It doesn’t matter whether you get up or fall asleep again.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible. “Why are you in such a hurry, my early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 points. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently. “The second word: contribution.” Mr. White said. “ So easy.” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “ Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “ This is my happiest moment.” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he said in a low voice. He had spelled it wrong. “ What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “ I expect my classmates to think I am a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example of telling a lie.”
Looking at the red sign “ 100 percent ” which was written at his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

    作文
    Dear Jack,
I’m writing to you from China. I arrived home safe and sound the day before yesterday. Thinking of the two-week wonderful time I spent in Canada. I just can’t help thinking of the help you gave me. It was very kind of you to offer me lots of useful advice on how to improve my English and make friends with other campers. Also, I learned a lot about Canadian culture by working with you. I’ll always remember this memorable trip as well as your kindness. I hope we’ll keep in touch forever.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’t get 100 percent on the test. I missed a word.” He stood up, handing his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. “ I spelled contribution with ‘s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’.” Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “ Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter. “ He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from Mr. White and expressed his thanks to him. Meanwhile, he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.
