  Google announced an artificial intelligence (AI) system that showed an amazing ability to discover lung cancer in early testing and even outperformed radiologists.
  The tech giant applied the system to 42,000 patient CT scans (扫描) taken during a National Institutes of Health clinical trial and managed to outperform six radiologists in determining whether patients had cancer, according to a study published in Nature Medicine.
  The AI system is able to detect 5 percent more cancers and cut false positives — that is, when a tumor (肿块) is found but actually it turns out to be completely harmless — by 11 percent by reviewing a single scan, the study says.
  "These people have a technology that will improve the accuracy (准确性) of screening greatly," Dr. Otis Brawley, a professor at Johns Hopkins University who was not involved in the study, told STAT.
  Brawley told the medical news organizations that he was generally doubtful about lung cancer screening, but he stressed that the performance of Google's AI system in reducing false positives was an important step forward. "It's going to prevent more bad things from happening to people who are being screened," added Brawley.
  Artificial intelligence has long been suggested as a way to improve screenings and allow doctors to find out a series of tumors with far more accuracy.
  However, Google's system will need to receive stricter testing before it could be put into medical practice. Since the study was limited to patients who had already been treated, it is not known whether the system would lead to better effects when used on new patients.
