We prmised we wuld prtect the frest in return and restre the bidiversity. ”
    Grups f wmen patrl the frest at least twice a day. As they walk amng the trees, they blw their whistles and bang wden sticks against tree trunks. “We beat ur sticks and patrl in grups f 10, ” Biswal said. “We spread ut inside the frest and blw whistles. Anyne with the intentin t harm the lcal bidiversity will flee n hearing ur whistle and the banging f ur sticks n tree trunks. ”
    In 2001, ver 70 wmen frm Gundalba came tgether t frm the Wmen’s Frest Prtectin Cmmittee. Apart frm their daily patrls, they als apprached neighbring villages that als depend n the frest fr firewd abut setting up a system fr sustainability (可持续性). Fr example, every village is allwed t gather firewd frm the frest n a set day f the mnth, usually a few days after anther settlement has finished the gathering prcess.
    Over the years, they have caught several peple cutting trees illegally in the frest. Asked if they have ever been afraid f patrlling the large frest they said n. “The frest is an extensin f ur hme, ” Biswal said. “Wn’t it hurt t see yur children suffer? This is hw a mther feels and we are ding smething that cmes t us naturally. ”
    Thanks t the wmen’s effrts, the frest gradually came back t life. Birds started nesting in trees again and the animals returned.
