For example, people might look at what others have, like expensive clothes or nice cars, and wish they could have the same. But the things that money can buy cannot bring happiness to a person for long. ① But is that really true? Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. ② Instead, it's giving money to others that makes people happy. ③ It could be buying a present for a friend or a family member. ④ It could be buying a homeless person food to eat. It could be giving money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel? Whether it is a small or large amount of money, people feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too. This idea of connecting your happiness to the happiness of others is described as ubuntu in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa who asked some kids to race to a nearby tree. The first child to touch the tree would get a sweet treat. Surprisingly, all the children held hands and ran together. They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they had done this. Luckily the traffic lights turned green as she was to cross the road, so she made it. When the bus passed the golden arches(拱形门) of McDonald's, they reminded her of a hamburger. She hadn't had breakfast that morning because the fruit salad on the blue dish didn't look delicious at all. However, Amber remembered that she was still on a diet. So now she was really in a black mood. You may have noticed that several colors were used in the above story so as to help describe Amber's morning. In fact, colors influence your life more than you can ever imagine. Take language for example: You may describe a sick person as being "a bit green". To describe a depressed(沮丧的) person, you say that the person is "feeling blue". In short, colors do add interest to daily conversations. Besides, colors can be used in many parts of your daily life. Have you ever thought about why many school buses and taxis are painted yellow, and stop signs red? Since yellow is the most eye-catching color, it can catch people's attention, especially in heavy traffic. As for red, it is the color which usually shows warning; as a result, some traffic signs use this color. For the same reason, hot-water taps are usually marked red. The colors of a dining environment possibly decide how much you eat. Most fast-food restaurants are often decorated in bright colors such as red, yellow, orange, and white for the purpose of increasing people's appetite(胃口).This is because bright colors are natural colors found in many foods, and, therefore, able to raise people's spirits. Blue, in comparison with bright colors,is said to lower people's appetite because few foods are blue in nature. For those who are on a diet, blue dishes and bowls might help! "Morning, Amber! What happened? You look a bit green," said Violet, Amber's best friend. "Nothing...just feeling...blue," said Amber. "Hey! Come to my place tonight. Do you know what I just bought? A wii! It's red-hot(最新的)." Amber was tickled pink(高兴极了) to have the chance to play with the wii and said, "Sounds great!"1.According to the passage, if you are on a diet, might help. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power — you'd stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time — you did it! Now, the next step — walking. You'd seen others do it. It didn't look that hard — just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong — more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again and again, you understood how to walk. If people found you walking, they cheered, "Oh, look at what the kid is doing." This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child — how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering? You couldn't wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself. So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.根据短文内容回答下列问题1.What is the first step in learning to walk?(不超过15个词) 2.When did you understand how to walk?(不超过15个词) 3.What should you do if you want to succeed in doing something?(不超过15个词)四、单元话题写作初三学生 Sandy 面临中考,面对父母和老师的期望以及每天堆成山的作业感到非常苦恼,昨天因为看了一小时的电视跟妈妈吵架,最后摔门而去。 Dear Sandy,I'm really glad that you can share your problems and feelings with me.Here is my advice.
