A single Clark's Nutcracker may stre upwards f 30,000 seeds each year, and there may be as many as 1,000 separate strage sites. In the winter, they will get the seeds back fr fd.

Transprting habitats r even the materials fr habitats that astrnauts can safely live in during a lunar missin r an extended stay n Mars will be expensive. And they will likely take up a lt f space t shuttle them frm ne planet t anther, when ther valuable resurces may be needed.
One f the prjects at NASA's Ames Research Center in Califrnia fcuses n myc-architecture. This wuld allw fr mre rganic habitats grwn frm fungi(真菌)and the threads that cmprise their architecture, knwn as mycelia(菌丝).
"Right nw, traditinal habitat designs fr Mars are like a turtle—carrying ur hmes with us n ur backs—a reliable plan, but with huge energy csts," said Lynn Rthschild, the principal investigatr n the early-stage prject. "Instead, we can emply mycelia t grw these habitats urselves when we get there."
Astrnauts culd bring a habitat made frm lightweight materials filled with fungi. Once the habitat was placed n the surface, all the astrnauts wuld need t d is t get the fungi t grw by adding water. The habitat wuld prtect humans while als prtecting the lunar r Martian surface because the fungi wuld be cntained within the structure. The mycelia will be genetically altered s they can't exist if separated frm the habitat, preventing the surface f Mars frm becming plluted.
Fungi feed ff rganic material. Underneath, mycelia act like rts that actively build the fungi. In this example f synthetic(合成的)bilgy, they can actually be used t create a different kind f detailed structure like the literal building blcks f a habitat.
Mars wn't just be a harsh envirnment fr humans, but the fungi as well. The fungi will need cyanbacteria(兰细菌)t survive, which use slar energy t turn dixide and water int xygen and fd. T supprt that, the prject team has designed habitat with runded rf. On the utside will be a layer f frzen water ice, which can serve as a barrier between the astrnauts and radiatin. The frzen layer can als prvide water fr the secnd layer cmprised f cyanbacteria, which will turn it int xygen fr the astrnauts. The final layer will be made f mycelia, which can gather nutrients frm the cyanbacteria layer.

    A.It is expensive and strng.
    B.It is ecnmical and ec-friendly.
C.It lks like a turtle in the distance.

(2)What can be learned abut mycelia?
A.They survive easily utside a habitat.
B.They grw faster n Mars than n Earth.
C.They cntribute t the verall structure f fungi.
D.They have been widely used in architecture.

(3)What is special abut the layers in a habitat?
A.The secnd layer is made f mycelia.
B.The utside layer is cvered with fungi.
C.The final layer turns water int xygen.
D.The frzen layer helps hld back radiatin.

(4)What is the authr's purpse in writing this text?
A.T reprt a space research prject.
B.T shw sme new challenges in space.
C.T suggest reliable habitat t astrnauts.
D.T discuss the pssibility f mving t Mars.
