Passage (B)
The sun appears t experience far fewer changes in brightness and intensity than ther stars like it. Researchers reprted last week n their examinatin f 369 stars. They cmpared each ne t the sun in terms f surface temperature, size and rtatin. They fund that n average, the ther stars had five times mre brightness variability than ur sun.
The lead authr was Tim Reinhld, an astrnmer with the Max Planck Institute fr Slar System Research in Germany. He tld the Reuters news agency that the variability in brightness results frm dark spts n the surface f the star mving in and ut f view.
“A direct measure f slar activity is the number f sunspts n the surface,” Reinhld said. “Finding such stars with very similar parameters as ur sun but being five times mre variable was surprising.”
The sun —made up mainly f hydrgen and helium—is an average-sized star that frmed mre than 4.5 billin years ag. It stretches abut 1.4 millin kilmeters acrss and has a surface temperature f 5,500 degrees Celsius.
The researchers cmpared scientific data n the similar stars t histrical recrds f the sun’s activity. The recrds included abut 400 years f bservatinal data n sunspts. The researchers als studied abut 9,000 years f data based n chemical element variants in tree rings and ice buildup tied t slar activity. These recrds shw the sun has nt been much mre active than it is nw.
The researchers said increased magnetic activity related t sunspts can lead t electrmagnetic events that effect Earth. Fr example, large releases f plasma—a cllectin f charged particles—frm uter areas f the sun’s atmsphere culd cause prblems fr satellites and ther cmmunicatins equipment.
The discvery may be gd news fr life n Earth A much mre active sun might have had mre majr effects n Earth’s gelgy and ancient climate. “A ‘t active’ star wuld definitively change the cnditins fr life n the planet, s living with a quite bring star is nt the wrst ptin,” Reinhld said.

7. lnger 由than the ther tw drawers可知, 此处应填比较级形式。
