My mther was diagnsed with Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆症)last summer. Suddenly, it was difficult fr me t accept that the rles were nw reversed---my mther became my child, and I became her mther. I became impatient, argued with her, nce I even yelled at her. Gradually, I was used t this kind f life. Nw I am able t deal with her and the situatin better. I have learned a lt f life lessns frm the experience.
My mther reacts very sensitively t my feelings. That is typical f Alzheimer’s patients. When I visit her, feeling hectic and tense, she reacts immediately, takes n my md, and becmes nervus and negative. But when I cheerful and attentive, she is happy. This has taught me t pay mre attentin t my wn feelings when I am with ther peple.
I always thught I was very tlerant, but in reality, my tlerance ran ut as sn as smene turned away frm what I cnsidered “right”. With my mther I can nw really be tlerant. Thrugh her illness she has develped a childlike tactlessness. Eating ut in restaurants, fr example, is a bit embarrassing when she shuts at the waiter that the fd is s bad r talks abut peple at the next table in a lud vice. Of curse I make sure that my mther desn’t ffend anyne, but I’ve stpped cmplaining abut thers and have becme mre tlerant.
I have als learned that everything has special value. When my mther gt sick I didn’t want t burden my tw daughters with it. They are yung and have enugh ging n with their educatin, and starting their careers. I felt that it was simply my jb as my mther’s daughter. The mst wnderful discvery I’ve made thrugh my mther’s disease may be that my children nt nly ffer t help me when they sense that I’m feeling verwhelmed, but that they take care f my mther n their wn initiative. They visit her ften, play cards with her, and lk at pht albums tgether with her. It shws me that it’s all wrth it.
