When man and nature try to co-exist, man usually wins out. But that wasn't the case in a small town in southern India when a native Robin recently chose to build her nest in an extremely inconvenient location.
The village of Potthakudi contains only 120 homes and has a total of 35 streetlights. Unfortunately ,the misguided mama bird had decided to set up housekeeping in the town's main lighting switchboard (配电板).
The nest and its inhabitants were first discovered by Karuppu Raja, the man tasked with turning on the streetlights each evening. A lifelong bird lover, Raja posted his find to local social media to warn the citizens of his discovery and ask for their cooperation in taking a hands-off approach to the unexpected guests.
“Switching off the lights is the only solution because the bird will fly once it realizes there is a human touch or contact near its nest,” Raja wrote on WhatsApp. "We should save the bird and its babies at any cost.”
While some initially voiced concerns that lack of nighttime illumination (照明)would be inconvenient ,Raja was eventually able to persuade his fellow villagers that any sacrifice would be worth it in the long run. "I explained that so many birds have died out and we should not let Indian Robin go the same way,“ Raja recalled.
So, rather than ousted the bird, the villagers agreed to observe a blackout (断电)until the baby birds were old enough to fly away. The town spent a total of 45 days and nights in the dark, even disconnecting the switchboard from the power source to keep the mom and her chicks safe.
After mama Robin and her babies finally took off, the blackout was lifted, but the village’s extraordinary protection efforts for the sake of one lone bird and her babies didn't go unnoticed.
A bird in the hand may be worth two in the bush, but a bird in the switchboard has earned Potthakudi a reputation for kindness that's likely to light up smiles for quite some time to come.
4. What can we know about Karuppu Raja?
A. He does his job carelessly. B. He loves birds all the time.

7. What can we infer from the text?
A. Man will conquer nature.

In a time when many people around the globe are in lockdown (封锁)and unable to attend the gym, home exercising is becoming important. Fears of piling on the pounds are forcing many to find novel ways to move the body. You don't need to pump iron or have expensive equipment like rowing and cycling machines to help you stay fit.
Exercising is not just important for your body, but also your mind. A study by Dr. Andrea Dunn at the Cooper Research Institute in Dallas, Texas found patients who did daily 35-minute walks per week experienced a 47% reduction in their depression (抑有R) levels.
Cardiovascular (心血管的)exercise, often simply called cardio, is designed to keep your heart rates up, which in turn will strengthen your heart and improve your general fitness. Many of us are turning to activities like skipping with an old rope, or watching one of the many “fitness experts” who produce exercise videos online.
Walking is another great activity to help you increase your blood circulation. There are many affordable pedometers which can be worn like a watch and used to track your steps, heart rates and sleeping patterns. You don't even have to step outside, with many people simply doing some power walking or running round their gardens or up and down their hallways.
Practicing yoga or Tai Chi can help to increase our body flexibility, which in turn can lower joint pain and help to protect us from injury. Finally, strength and resistance training can be done at home by simply lifting bags of rice or boxes instead of heavy weights in the gym.
There are many ways to help us stay active, and indeed these exercise habits can be carried over in our lives long after lockdown is lifted. For those of us who complain about our busy lives stopping us from hitting the gym, ten minutes a day with a rope or a bag of rice may not only help our fitness, but our mental health too.
8. What may encourage us to find new ways to exercise according to Paragraph 1 ?
A. Living a boring life.
B. Gaining weight.
C. Being mentally ill.
D. Losing connection.
9. Which is the most suitable for maintaining the heart rate?
A. Rope skipping. B. Pumping iron.
C. Power walking. D. Lifting bags.
10. What are the possible benefits of yoga and Tai Chi?
A. Losing weight quickly.
B. Making our bodies stay flexible.
C. Letting us recover from injury slowly.
D. Reducing your depression levels efficiently.
11. What's the best title of the text?
A. How to Exercise at Home B. What to Do in Lockdown
C. Different Ways to Keep Healthy D. The Importance of Staying Fit

Sweden and its Nordic neighbors have some of the highest literacy rates (识字率)in the world. The Swedes view equal access to knowledge as important to an individual's future success. This is true regardless of economic background and, clearly, geographic location.
Sweden has a floating library - the bokbaten - that brings thousands of books to people on dozens of remote islands in the Stockholm archipelago twice a year. Every spring and fall since 1953, the Stockholm Library Service rents a boat for a week, loads it with books, and charts a course for about 23 inhabited (有人居住的)islands.
When the boat pulls in, people climb aboard to return books they borrowed during the last visit and check out the library’s newest offerings. The boat carries about 3 ,000 books, and people can put in requests ahead of time. The three or four volunteer librarians who take turns working on the ship say that, as you might expect, the latest best-sellers are in high demand. There are picture books for children, popular thrillers, texts about history and science, cookbooks, and audiobooks, etc.
In addition to a library boat, Sweden also has library buses that bring books to people in rural communities. They also develop temporary (临时的)libraries in places such as stores and social gathering spots. The boat starts as a service for fishermen and island workers but expands to serve people who prefer to read hard copies of books over e-books or audiobooks. Since island people can order copies in advance, boxes of books are piled up in the boat waiting to be delivered.
The book boat is of great positive value for children and adults because they can in this way take part in the modern public library. The book boat has an important function as good public relations for the library, s services and has the effect of promoting reading not only in the archipelago but elsewhere.
Even in a nation of book lovers, the future of the floating library remains uncertain. If the Regional Library cuts funding for the boat, the bokbaten will be no more.
12. What is the key to a person's future success according to the Swedes?
A. Equal access to knowledge.
B. Economic background.
C. Geographic location.
D. Personal effort.
13. What can we know about the book boat?
A. It has a promising future.
B. It is run by several official librarians.
C. It brings books to people many times a year.
D. It is popular among people of remote islands.
14. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the book boat?
A. Its positive role.
B. Its uncertain future.
C. Its great effect on kids.
D. Its difference from public libraries.
15. In which section of a newspaper can we probably read the text?
A. Travel. B. Lifestyle. C. Business. D. Art.

When he was 18, Omar Brooks left home in Canonsburg to join the army. His training took him to Fort Stewart in Georgia, where every morning after getting up at 6 :30, the soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division sang "Dogface Soldier" -- a World War II song. "I'm just a dogface soldier, with a rifle (步枪)on my shoulder, and I eat raw meat for breakfast every day …”
The 3rd Division was among the first wave of ground forces to attack Iraq from Kuwait, and Brooks was the first from his army to drive across the border in a vehicle armed with eight missiles and a 50-caliber machine gun. He survived, but he lost friends and struggled with post-traumatic (创伤 后的)stress disorder after leaving the service in 2003.
He struggled for 15 years to fill the hole in his soul left by his military service. Then, two years ago, this dogface soldier started working with Bridge to Home Animal Rescue in Eighty Four, Washington County. Fostering (代养)dogs and finding them homes have helped Brooks, now 40 and a state corrections officer, to remove the suffering of daily life.
“ Without sounding like a man with a soft heart, there is something to be said about puppy kisses and seeing unconditional love in a time where people need to see more unconditional love,“ he said.
Brooks, his wife, Nicole Malesic, and daughters Zaida, 5, and Waverly, 2, have fostered 16 dogs over the past two years. They play with dogs together. They walk and bath them. They frequently make videos and do photo shoots of the animals to encourage adopters (收养者)on social media. "People are looking to enrich their homes," he said. “People are getting dogs or cats or different companions (陪伴)for their homes because we are dealing with a difficult time.” 注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
