Just approximately 50 years ago, needing money to support family—my novels weren’t bestsellers—I had the idea of taking the longest train trip imaginable and writing a travel book about it.
The trip would be improvisational—no credit card, no idea where I’d be staying, nor any idea of how long this trip would take. Never had I written a travel book, though I’d read many of them. My favorites were those giving a vivid and detailed description of a difficult and unpleasant experience, with ups and downs. But I hoped my trip wouldn’t be that, despite the fact that it was obviously an adventure.
I set off with one small bag containing clothes, a map of Asia, and some travelers’ cheques, I made it to Mashhad, travelled by bus through Afghanistan and rode the rails again. Sometimes threatened, now and then tired, occasionally laying up with food poisoning, I had a narrow escape—all of these vivid details for my story.
I came across an Indian in Afghanistan who said I should pay a visit to him in Kanpur, and he gave me his address: “I live in Railway Bazaar,” as a consequence of which I had my title early on The Great Railway Bazaar on my return in 1974, appearing the following year to go viral and sell well—and it’s still in print, in many languages. A few years later, an idea flooding into my mind, I took a similar trip, mostly by train, from my home in Boston to Patagonia, and wrote about it in The Old Patagonian Express.
That’s the past. Nothing is the same now. All such trips are unique and unrepeatable t’s not just that the steam trains of Asia are gone. Much of the peace and order is gone. Who’d risk an Iranian train now or take a bus through Afghanistan? All travel books are out of fashion, but they preserve something of the past that would otherwise be lost.
24. What does the underlined word “improvisational” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Impressive. B. Unprepared. C. Interesting. D. Unforgettable.
25. Which word can best describe the author’s trip?
A. Exhausting. B. Adventurous. C. Frightening. D. Frustrating.
26. What gave the author inspiration for the title The Great Railway Bazaar?
A. The Indian friend he met. B. The train rides he experienced.
C. The details for his narrative. D. The idea of taking a similar trip
27. What did the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. His travel books are outdated.
B. Journey by train is not popular.
C. His travel books conserve what may be lost.
D. He is unwilling to take the train or bus to travel.
C
Based on large language models, the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT can offer everything from answers to basic general knowledge questions, to writing essays and poems in natural English. Ask ChatGPT to write about the history of the French Revolution or Battles of Hastings, and it will provide a perfect essay in less than a second. It’s such a powerful tool openly accessible to any student for free. However, AI-based plagiarism(抄袭)or so called“AIgiarism”is fast taking off across student populations internationally, ringing alarm bells in schools and universities around the world.
The developers Open AI have since decided to prevent the misuse of its technology. The company is developing a system, water marks, for identifying those who cheat by submitting essays written by ChatGPT. By using the system which changes certain works into a recognizable pattern, the machine written text could be identified by anyone looking for the signs. These changes would not be noticeable to the reader. The researchers say that by setting up this kind of security system, it could prevent the technology from being misused for whatever reason. Such measures will also prevent an over dependence on the tool, which still has a long way to go before improving its accuracy, due to the fact that it collects the information from all over the internet. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement that it would be a mistake to depend on it for anything important at this stage.
Schools also in turn have tried to take matters into their own hands, with many across Europe and the US updating their policies to warn of punishments for those who are caught using the program improperly. Other schools have limited internet network access to ChatGPT on campus Examiners have the sense to identify essays written by ChatGPT by a lack of emotion or personal experiences in them. This ability is a human advantage AI will struggle to copy.
28. Why does the author mention French Revolution and Battles of Hastings?
A. To explain what they are. B. To show the power of ChatGPT.
C. To introduce what AIgiarism is. D. To make a comparison between them.
29. What can we learn about the system mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. The readers are clear about the system’s function
B. The readers are confident about ChatGPT’s future
C. It will probably prevent an over dependence on ChatGPT
D. It has successfully recognized essays written by ChatGPT.
30. What message does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph try to convey?
A. AI is able to match humans. B. AI is struggling to survive now.
C. AI has an advantage over humans. D. AI can’t copy everything from humans.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. ChatGPT—a powerful tool B. ChatGPT is forbidden in schools
C. OpenAI is developing a new system D. Actions against the misuse of ChatGPT
D
On one October morning in 2021, Mark A. Michaels was observing a tree in a forest when he spotted a bird flying below the branches about 50 yards away. Based on the bird’s size and long neck, Michaels first assumed he was looking at a duck. But then he noticed it occasionally folding its wings during flight, something he says that ducks don’t do—but woodpeckers do. “Ivory-bill!” he recalls shouting, now certain that the bird was an ivory-billed woodpecker(象牙喙啄木鸟), a species that hasn’t been identified in the wild since 1944.
Despite his certainty, not everyone agrees this woodpecker remains in the wild. In September 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) claimed that the ivory-billed woodpecker, along with 22 other species, is extinct. However, the data supporting the idea are debated. Debatable evidence presented at a meeting in January 2022 convinced USFWS that disagreement among scientists as to the ivory-billed woodpecker’s existence was considerable enough. As a result, on July 6, the agency issued a pause of extinction.
The ongoing case highlights some of the challenges researchers face in determining whether a species has actually gone extinct. According to guidelines issued by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), an organization that tracks species’ protection statuses, a species is extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died. “But researchers typically don’t know when or if that last death has occurred,” says H. Resit Akcakaya, an ecologist at Stony Brook University.
Moreover, there are costs to making the wrong call about a species’ existence in the wild, he adds. Continuing to regard an actually extinct species as endangered can lead to undervalued extinction rates, and confuse the bigger protection picture, as well as misdirect financial resources away from protecting endangered species to searching for ones that no longer exist. On the other hand, declaring something extinct when it really isn’t can lead to further harm on a struggling species.
32. What convinced Mark that the bird was an ivory-billed woodpecker?
A. Its unique way of flight. B. Its special living conditions.
C. Its similar appearance to ducks. D. Its disappearance from the wild.
33. Why did the USFWS issue a pause of extinction?
A. USFWS is heatedly debating with the public.
B. The ivory-billed woodpecker has a high status
C. Mark is certain about his discovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker.
D. Disagreement about the ivory-billed woodpecker’s existence is huge.
34. Which of the following may H. Resit Akcakaya agree with?
A. IUCN’s guidelines are practical and reasonable.
B. Researchers should track species’ conservation statuses.
C. The last death of an ivory-billed woodpecker has occurred.
D. It’s difficult to determine whether a species is extinct or not.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Determining a species’s existence will cost lots of money.
B. Numerous pictures of endangered species have been taken
C. Determining a species’s existence without mistakes is important.
D. Financial resources are removed from protecting endangered species.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Envy is a natural human emotion, and we writers suffer from it constantly. But if we allow it, our envy will eat us up inside and turn something we once loved (writing) into something we hate now. 36 . Here are some practical and effective steps you can follow.
Remind yourself why you write.
I write because it’s a main aspect of who I am. It satisfies me in a way nothing else does. Although I’m glad to cash whatever checks publishers send me, this is not my purpose. 37 . As long as I remember why I write, I don’t feel envious of others.
Keep a positive comment file.
I’ve long kept a blurb(简介)file where I list positive comments reviewers have made about my work. I use these blurbs when it comes time to promote my work. I also read over them when I need to remind myself that I’m a pretty good writer. I take screenshots(截屏)of positive things people say about my work on social media. 38
39
You know what happens when you don’t see people posting about their writing successes all the time? You know nothing about them. And if you know nothing about them, you can’t be envious of them, can you? So sometimes leaving the social media alone might help you reduce the chance of being envious. Living your life in the real not the virtual world can remind you that your writing career is about you, not about anyone else.
Not focus on writing only.
You should bear in mind that there are more things to your life than your writing career. Hopefully you have friends and family who love you. Spend some time with them. Do you have any hobbies that don’t involve writing, something you do it simply because it’s fun and relaxing? Do that for a while. Take a break for a few days and don’t feel guilty about it. 40
A. Cut down on social media.
B. Pay no attention to others successes.
C. Using blurbs make me feel satisfied and relieved.
D. And I look at them when I need an emotional lift as well.
E. I write not for such financial reward, but for emotional reward.
F. Therefore, how can we learn to live with it and minimize its effects?
G. Recharging yourself mentally and emotionally in turn benefits your writing.

Planting in My School
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift—tennis rackets(网球拍)and balls, which was exciting, for we had never played tennis. However, there was no tennis court in the small town where we lived. One Saturday morning my brother excitedly suggested playing tennis against the school building. I agreed immediately, not realizing what a lesson we would learn.
When we reached the school ground, no one was around. We began hitting our balls against the school building. We took turns hitting the ball back and forth, soon becoming pretty good at it and hitting higher and faster. Suddenly, something unthinkable happened—the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows. We looked around and no one was in sight except an old man sitting on a porch halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked my brother what to do. He looked around again. After confirming no one saw us, except that old man but he probably didn’t know who we were anyway, he suggested leaving secretly. “But should we tell Dad and Mum?” I asked again. A flash of worry came across his face. He was confused too. Carefully considering whether we should tell what had happened, we finally decided to pick up the rest of our balls and headed for home quietly.
Our mother was always in tune with her children. “What happened?” She asked as soon as she saw us. Looking into her eagle eyes, we had to admit what we had done. Hearing that, my mother screamed, “Oh, my goodness!” but soon calmly asked us to tell it to Dad. The moment Dad walked in the house, we both hurried to him and poured out our story. His response was typical. “Well, next Monday, I will call the school doorkeeper and see what we need to do. You will probably have to pay for the window.” We had two terribly worrying days to wait until our Dad got home from work on Monday.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
Dad stepped into the house, looking quite tired and serious.
