五、阅读单选
A reader wrote in a letter to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends, but how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends. Start by looking around your classroom. Think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation(欣赏)to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with, act friendly, and say “Hi, can I play, too?” or just join in.
If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up(搭配)friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before she left: You can introduce her to your new friends!

15 years ago, my parents bought a small house in the countryside, which they used for holidays. After I was born they started to go to the holiday house more. We used to drive 3 hours to get to the peace and quiet of our lovely house every Friday evening.
During the week my parents worked in London. My two brothers and I went to expensive private schools and we were all very busy. We hardly saw each other. We had several babysitters(临时保姆)as my parents had to work long hours. The only time we could be together was the weekend, and that was my happiest time. Howerver, every Sunday morning was torture because we had to leave the house then. We all hated the idea of leaving our village friends and the beautiful countryside.
Last year my dad had had enough. He sold our big house near London and my parents gave up their jobs and long working hours. They bought a smaller car. We are now living in our holiday house—two adults, three kids and a dog. My parents got jobs that allow them to work from home. We never have babysitter.
The best change for me is that now I go with my brothers to a small local school. After school we get on our bikes and ride around to see friends. My life is just so different. We feel calm and happy. We have fewer things but for me it seems like we have so much more. I am so glad we have changed our way of life.
43.How did the writer’s family use to go to the holiday house?
A.By bus. B.By bike. C.By train. D.By car.

B.The writer goes to a private school.
C.There are more things in their house.
D.The writer’s parents work from home.
San Diego Zoo has been a lovely home for giant(巨大)pandas since two of the black-and-white bears came to visit in 1987. This week, there was snow in San Diego—well, at least for a lucky group of giant pandas.
Over 15 tons of snow was blown into the San Diego Zoo’s panda area on Tuesday morning to give the endangered bears a chance to play. They would experience the snow just like living in their natural habitat(栖息地).
The snow day was a first for Xiao Liwu, whose name means “Little Gift”. He was the sixth baby panda born to Bai Yun. Xiao Liwu was jumping on her mom, playing with her and getting used to being thrown in the snow by her mom. Jennifer Becerra, a keeper of San Diego Zoo, said, “He was really enjoying the snow and running around. I’ve never seen him so excited.”
All the San Diego Zoo’s giant pandas are from China, as part of a long—term captive breeding(人工繁育) program. Four of Xiao Liwu’s brothers have already been moved from California to China.
Today, there are 44 giant pandas living in zoos outside of China, which is the bears’ only natural home. As just 1,600 pandas are thought to be left in the wild, researchers insist(强调)that captive breeding is an important way to study and protect the endangered pandas. Not only because of the habitat loss(减少)from human activities and low reproductive rates(繁殖率), giant pandas’ survival(幸存)is also affected(影响)by climate change—a study showed that global(全球)warming could kill much of the bears’ main food, bamboo, over the next century.
47.What does the underlined word “climate” mean in Chinese?

48.Which of the following might NOT put giant pandas in danger?

B.Captive breeding is the most useful way to protect giant pandas.
C.China is the only natural home of giant pandas.
D.Xiao Liwu’s brothers now all live in China.
50.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Giant pandas in San Diego Zoo.
B.Some endangered bears around the world.
C.The purpose of the captive breeding program.
D.Some bad results of human activities.
六、补全短文5选5
American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.
51. Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know.” Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “Why did you say?” However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. 52. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
53. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.”
There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” 54. But the British often say “Have you a storybook?”
All these differences can be confusing(易混淆的)if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. 55. Many people in Canada speak French.
A.Many expressions are also different in the two countries.
B.First of all, they sound very different.
