It has always been thought that when it comes to tornadoes, the most peaceful place is the centre: the eye of the storm. But a photo taken this week in the small Canadian town of Three Hills, Alberta, suggests that there is perhaps no place more peaceful than inside the calm mind of Theunis Wessels.
It all started when Mr Wessels’ wife, Cecilia, was warned by their nine-year-old daughter that he was cutting grass in their yard when a violent tornado appeared in the distance. When her husband refused to come inside, saying it was moving away from them, Mrs Wessels took a photo to show her parents the storm. The photo, which has been shared widely on social media, is a masterclass in calmness.
In it, the sockless Mr Wessels, dressed casually in summer shorts and sunglasses, is seen never being upset by the disastrous column of cloud. “I took the picture just to show my mum and dad in South Africa, ‘Look, there’s a tornado,’ and now everyone is like, Why is your husband cutting the grass?” Cecilia told the Times Colonist.
When asked later about the tornado’s approach to him, Mr Wessels responded, “I was keeping an eye on it,” seeming as cool as his gardening style and attracting more than a little respect. “Alberta, Canada,” wrote one admiring Twitter user, “where men face the elements and do what needs to be done.” A writer for Esquire magazine struck a pensive note: “I can understand Theunis,” Peter Wade admitted, “sometimes when the world is raging outside, the only thing you can do is keep your small area of it.”
24. How is Paragraph one developed?
A. By listing theories. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By making comparisons.
25. Why did Cecilia take the photo?
A. To post it on social media. B. To record her husband’s heroic act.
C. To inform her parents of the tornado. D. To prove what is the most peaceful place.
26. Which may make Mr. Wessels respected?
A. His way of gardening. B. His calmness in the face of a tornado.
C. His bravery in fighting the tornado. D. His rich knowledge about tornado.
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A man ignored a tornado in Canada.
B. There are some features of tornado in Canada.
C. A man survived surprisingly from a tornado.
D. A picture caused heated discussions.
根据第一段“It has always been thought that when it comes to tornadoes, the most peaceful place is the centre: the eye of the storm. But a photo taken this week in the small Canadian town of Three Hills, Alberta, suggests that there is perhaps no place more peaceful than inside the calm mind of Theunis Wessels.”
根据第二段中“It all started when Mr Wessels’ wife, Cecilia, was warned by their nine-year-old daughter that he was cutting grass in their yard when a violent tornado appeared in the distance. When her husband refused to come inside, saying it was moving away from them, Mrs Wessels took a photo to show her parents the storm. ”可知这一切都始于当时Wessels先生的妻子Cecilia,被9岁的女儿警告说爸爸他在院子里割草时,远处出现了猛烈的龙卷风。当她的丈夫拒绝进屋,说它正在远离他们时,Wessels夫人拍了一张照片给父母看风暴。由此可知,Cecilia拍这张照片是为了通知她的父母有龙卷风。故选C。
26. B 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“When asked later about the tornado’s approach to him, Mr Wessels responded, ‘I was keeping an eye on it,’ seeming as cool as his gardening style and attracting more than a little respect.”
27. One day when I was 12,my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem inability to read.
In the library,I found my way into the “Children's Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye.It presented a picture of a beagle.I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning,he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him.I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog.I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title,Amos, the Beagle with a Plan.Unknowingly,I had read the title.Without opening the book,I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush,I started to read about Amos.I read very, very slowly with difficulty.Though pages were turned slowly,I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog,and I was the little boy in the book.At the end of the story,my mind continued the final scene of reunion,on and on,until my own lost dog and I were,in my mind, running together.
My mother's call returned me to the real world.I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book.Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it.Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
I never told my mother about my “miraculous”(奇迹般地)experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.

Many of us would like to spend all of our time helping dogs in need, but it can be hard to carve out that kind of time. Well, one man, Eugene Bostick, decided that when he retired, he would devote the rest of his life to helping homeless dogs feel loved.
Eugene Bostick was fortunate enough to be able to retire at the ripe age of 65 after working his entire life on his farm. His farm was located at the end of a dead end street, and he noticed that people would, unfortunately, abandon their dogs on the farm.
Eugene refused to see these pets suffering, and he quickly picked up these abandoned dogs, giving them food and taking them to the vet’s(兽医诊所) to make sure they were spayed or neutered(阉割).
Eugene’s farm has all kinds of animals, such as horses and goats, so these dogs have plenty of other animals to play with.
Over the last 20 years, Eugene has shown his kindness by taking on these abandoned pets, but he has also seen the chance to offer them a bit of adventure. After spotting a neighbor transporting rocks behind his tractor using barrels, he realized he could do the same for his dogs. Eugene got to work to make his own train, and added some pleasant pillows so his furry friends could travel in comfort. The dogs quickly got on the barrel train, and together, they spent hours traveling around town and through the forests nearby.
After they were spotted around town, one neighbor took a picture of Eugene that went viral, and a GoFundMe page was started that gained plenty of donations. Eugene was amazed by everyone’s generosity, and was happy to see others help these abandoned animals feel loved. Eugene will continue to care for his dogs, and we should all follow his lead!

About 20 years ago, I moved to Woodland Hills to take a job in a small hospital's emergency department. No one wanted to work on New Year's Eve, so the shift went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job.
At 9 p.m., the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend New Year with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.
The following year I got New Year's Eve duty again. At 9 p.m. sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr. Lee and said, "You probably don't remember me, but last New Year Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me." He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.
The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr. and Mrs. Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 p.m., the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild. Mr. Lee, his family and I spent 13 New Year's Eves together. In the later years the staff all knew about the story and would work to give me time with him in the break room, where we spent a half-hour each New Year's Eve.
The last year I saw him, he brought me a gift. I carefully opened the package and found a crystal (水晶) bell inside. It was engraved (镌刻) with a single word: Friendship. Now, my family, friends and I ring that bell every New Year's Eve at exactly 9 p.m. and offer our best wishes to the man who we won't forget.
24.Why was working on New Year's Eve considered as "a thankless job"?
A.Most patients were seriously ill. B.Patients refused to express thanks.
C.Doctors had nothing to do on that day. D.Doctors couldn't get praise for the hard job.
25.How was Mr. Lee when the author left the hospital the next morning?
A.He was really angry with her. B.He was still in a state of danger.
C.He got ready to leave the hospital. D.He recovered from his heart attack.
26.According to the passage, the author formed a habit of _________.

Forrest Gump(1992)
Forrest Gump(Tom Hanks) is a simple man with a low IQ but good intentions. This movie follows the fictional story in which the simple man makes his way through some of the more turbulent(动荡的)times from the 1960s through 1980s. This film took home six Oscars, inspired a "Weird Al" song, and proves that a big heart is the most important thing.

Realizing how much he means to others, he rushes back home and all sorts of happy, inspirational, Christmassy things happen.
Dead Poet's Society(1990)
John Keating(Robin Williams)is a high school English literature teacher at a famous all﹣male boarding school who gets into trouble with the school administration after encouraging his students to challenge authority and think for themselves. It is certainly inspirational, if not also frustratingly.
A Beautiful Mind(2001)
This movie tells the story of John Nash(Russell Crowe), a professor at Princeton, a US university, who revolutionized the field of game theory and fell into madness as a result of paranoid schizophrenia(精神分裂症). When Tom was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when Tom reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood friends. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working—at any age—is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
24.What do we know about Tom?
A.He received little love from his family. B.He had few childhood friends
C.He enjoyed his career and marriage. D.He was envied by others in his childhood.
25.Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by_______________.
A.recording the boys’ effort in school B.comparing different sets of scores
C.evaluating the men’s mental health D.measuring the men’s problem solving ability
26.What does the underlined word “sharp” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Clear and definite B.Quick to react
C.Having a thin edge D.Sudden and rapid
27.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Competent adults know more about love than work.
B.Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.
C.Love brings more joy to people than work does.
D.Independence is the key to one’s success.
答案:24.C; 25.B; 26.A; 27.B
He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. C. He enjoyed his career and marriage.(他喜欢他的职业和婚姻)符合以上说法,故选C项。
Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.(在Vaillant的指导下,研究人员将男性的心理健康得分与他们的少年活动得分进行比较。
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. A. Clear and definite(清晰明确的)符合以上说法,故选A项。
Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. B. Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.(心理健康对于成年的精彩生活是必不可少的)符合以上推测,故选B项。

Isaac Newton is one of the greatest geniuses in history, though in his younger years, nobody would have guessed that he would grow up to become one of the world’s most brilliant minds.
He was born prematurely (早产) and quite small. He hated his step family. He went to a school that did not teach mathematics, and then later he was removed. His mother was widowed twice. She urged him to become a farmer, and he hated that too. He was a working student in college, doing odd jobs to pay for his education. And he graduated from Cambridge without honors.
He didn’t look outstanding at all, and neither was his story. But his mind saw more complex, and fascinating stories in the concepts of mathematics and physics. His plain life did not bother him at all.
Though he went through his Cambridge years with barely any honors, the inside of his study was found to have some of the most groundbreaking discoveries in physics and mathematics. He went on to discover many of his famous theories, including the generalized binomial theorem, power series, and infinite sums. He also observed the way light is refracted ( 折 射 ) by lenses and developed his own Newtonian telescope. Through his discovery of the Laws of Universal Gravitation and Laws of Motion, the field of physics was forever transformed.
If there was anything constant about the life of Isaac Newton, it wasn’t merely that his brain was large, but that it was continuously filled with wonder. Isaac Newton’s life was brilliant, not because of his wondrous adventures, but because he saw wonder in everything- from the minute details of mathematical philosophy, to how the world works. Truly, there is nothing boring or ordinary about a mind that seeks adventure in all things.
24. Which word can describe Issac Newton as a young man?
A Ordinary. B. Diligent. C. Happy. D. Intelligent.
25. What can we infer about Issac Newton from the third paragraph?
A. His life experience was extraordinary. B. He had a gift for math and physics.
C. He was good at making up stories. D. He didn’t care about his grades at school.
26. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 5?
A. Newton’s life was full of adventures. B. Nothing Is impossible to a willing heart.
C. A brain good at discovery is never boring. D. Newton had a brain larger than any other’s.
27. What can be the best title of this text?
A. The Achievements of Isaac Newton B. The Brilliant Life of Isaac Newton
C. Interest Is the Best Secret of Success D. Hard Work Makes up for Lack of Intelligence
A 25. B 26. C 27. B

Free time:
Once you are done with all your classes and activities, it’s time to relax.
Bedtime:
In most boarding schools, the lights go out around 10: 30 pm.
Being nervous just before you go to a boarding school is completely normal and understandable. Hopefully, being aware of the usual routine you’ll be following can help you. Once you are there, you will also see how exciting life in a boarding school in England can be.

由文章最后一句“Hopefully, being aware of the usual routine you’ll be following can help you. Once you are there, you will also see how exciting life in a boarding school in England can be. ”希望了解你将遵循的日常程序能对你有所帮助。一旦你到了那里,你也会看到在英国寄宿学校的生活是多么令人兴奋”以及“ Early Morning, Lessons, Lunch, Activities/ Sports, Prep, Free time, Bedtime”的具体内容判断出本文的主要目的是是向准备留学英国的学生介绍英国寄宿学校的日常安排。故选A项。
B
I need help! I have to fix a leaking pipe in my bathroom but I'm not sure where to begin. I know I lack the necessary DIY skills, but luckily there are numerous books and online videos that will hopefully give me the information I need. Publications that help us to help ourselves are nothing new, but the range of them is increasing with advice being given far beyond practical tasks around the house.
Bookshops these days are full of titles which claim to boost your self-confidence, your wealth, your love life or your career. Some claim to improve your life within seven days! It's big business and it's thought that the self-help industry is worth $10bn in the US alone.
The first self-help book called 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' was published in 1936, and has since sold 30 million copies and is still popular now. It includes guidance on how to make people like you and how to make your life happier. It might seem strange to think that we need a book to tell us how to live our lives but self-help books remain a go to remedy for those of us looking for enlightenment.
There are, of course, trends in what we need help with. Emma Marshall, who works at British bookshop Waterstones, says “at the moment we're in the tidying up, getting rid of things trend... I think the trend right now is about slowing down in your life." It seems there is always something we need help with, and reading about it can be very therapeutic - it makes us feel good, even if we don't do anything about it.
Of course, the internet has become the place to go to for salvation. We've got used to searching for solutions online, and now these solutions even include how to fix or improve our lives. Interestingly, psychologist Caroline Beaton, says people called 'millennials' are self-critical — they are aware of their own faults — which also means they're more likely to spend time and money on self-help. There's also a theory that the self-help industry does well during a recession — people are perhaps even more likely to reach for self-help to improve their situation.
Whatever the reason for the continued interest in self-help, it's good to know help is at hand when we need it. The alternative to finding a happier life is just to come to terms with yourself as you are -I know, I read about it in a book! Do you believe in self-help books?
24. Where else can you get self-help advice apart from books?
A. From teachers B. From friends C. From the Internet D. From parents
25. What do you know about self-books?
A.They may offer you some keys to success.
B.They hasn't gained great popularity.
C.All of us enjoy them very much.
D.They can certainly improve your life within seven days.
26. Why do millennials spend more money on self-help books according to Caroline Beaton?
A.They are stuck in a recession.
B.They realize they are not perfect.
C.They are more likely to have access to books.
D.They haven't got used to searching for solutions online.
27. What can we infer from the passage?
A.People don't have interest in self-help books.
B.Accepting yourself as you are makes you happier.
C.The self-help industry makes little difference during a recession.
D.The current trend in self-help books is about rushing around and taking things easier.
根据文章第一段第二句 but luckily there are numerous books and online videos that will hopefully give me the information I need.

Interestingly, psychologist Caroline Beaton, says people called 'millennials' are self-critical – they are aware of their own faults – which also means they're more likely to spend time and money on self-help.
The alternative to finding a happier life is just to come to terms with yourself as you are…,找到更幸福生活的一种办法就是忍受并接受现在的你。

Thomas Edison, inventor of such items as the phonograph(留声机) and the world's first practical light bulb, is known around the world. But another lesser-known figure is owed his share of credit —Edison's competitor, Nikola Tesla. It took the work of both men to make possible a world that runs on electric power; however, their names were not always shared.
Edison, a self-made American inventor, built his name as a successful businessman.Tesla, a well-educated Serbian immigrant, was a tireless thinker. In 1882, Tesla got a job in the Paris branch of Continental Edison Company. Soon, his obvious skill won him a position at the Edison Machine Works in the United States, where the goal was to bring electricity to all of New York City. But Edison and Tesla had different ideas about how to make that goal a reality.
Edison worked mainly with direct current (DC) power. Although DC would prove useful in the decades to come, it was only effective at the time for powering things that were about a mile or less from the power source. However, alternating current (AC) power—supported by Tesla allowed electricity to be carried over long distances through power lines.
Soon the battle between the two was on. Edison proposed that several small DC-based power plants could be constructed to power different parts of a city, but this was impractical. Desperate to succeed, Edison attempted to show that DC power “was safe”—he even electrocuted(电死) an elephant to show the “dangers” of AC.In the end, however, it was practical, inexpensive AC that won the battle. By 1896, even Edison's own company had adopted AC.
Tesla succeeded, but Edison, whose self-branded companies won him over a thousand patents, is the more well-known of the two. Regardless, each inventor had a big hand in shaping the way we live.

C.He invented many things with Edison. D.He was admired by Edison for his invention.
26.What's a big difference between AC and DC power?
A.DC power moves more quickly. B.AC power ranges over larger areas.
C.AC power is much safer and cheaper. D.DC power can be widely used in more fields.
27.What's the best title for the text?
A.Edison vs. Tesla: the war of the currents

C.DC vs AC: the theory behind the two concepts
D.Nikola Tesla: a name that should be remembered
答案:24.C 25.B 26.B 27.A
根据文章第一句“Thomas Edison, inventor of such items as the phonograph(留声机) and the world's first practical light bulb, is known around the world.(留声机等物品和世界上第一个实用的灯泡的发明者托马斯·爱迪生世界闻名。)”可知,爱迪生因多种发明而闻名世界,结合划线词后一句“It took the work of both men to make possible a world that runs on electric power(这两个人的努力使一个以电力为动力的世界成为可能)”可知,尼古拉·特斯拉也为电力的发明做出了贡献,由此可推知,划线词所在句“But another lesser-known figure is owed his share of credit—Edison's competitor, Nikola Tesla.”
根据第二段中“In 1882, Tesla got a job in the Paris branch of Continental Edison Company. Soon, his obvious skill won him a position at the Edison Machine Works in the United States(1882年,特斯拉在大陆爱迪生公司的巴黎分公司找到了一份工作,很快,他娴熟的技术为他赢得了在美国爱迪生机器工厂的职位)”可知,尼古拉·特斯拉起初在爱迪生公司工作。故选B项。
26.
根据第三段最后两句“Although DC would prove useful in the decades to come, it was only effective at the time for powering things that were about a mile or less from the power source. However, alternating current (AC) power—supported by Tesla allowed electricity to be carried over long distances through power lines.(尽管在接下来的几十年里,直流电源被证明是有用的,但它只是在距离电源一英里或更少的地方才有效。然而,由特斯拉支持的交流电使电力可以通过电力线进行长距离传输。)”可知,交流电和直流电的巨大差异是交流电传输范围更大。故选B项。
27.
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第四段中“Soon the battle between the two was on.(很快两人之间的斗争开始了)”可知,本文主要讲述了爱迪生和特斯拉之间的“电流之战”。故选A项。

If you were to throw, say, a banana peel out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it’s part of a fruit — right? Actually, no. A banana peel can take up to two years to be naturally processed, and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of discarded banana peels. An orange peel and a cigarette butt has a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana peel, but tin cans last up to 100 years; and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer, we can’t merely measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short length of biodegrading time, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is discarded in the UK every day.
It’s not a cheap habit either: to keep our streets clean annually costs UK taxpayers £500 million, and when you include our green spaces, that goes up to £1 billion. So, it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping you could face a £20,000 fine or even jail time and, if you disposed of something dangerous, the court could give you five years to serve. Regardless of how severe these punishments might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2,000 were found guilty out of 825,000, so we still have some way to go in making sure people obey the rules.
24. What does the underlined word “discarded” in para1 mean?
A. Harmless. B. Processed. C. Thrown. D. Long-lasting.
25. Which of the following has the longest biodegrading term?
A. Glass bottles. B. Tin cans. C. Cigarette butts. D. Banana peels.
26. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The severity of rubbish can be measured by its lifetime.
B. Quite a few people were found guilty of illegally littering.
C. Every year UK taxpayers spend £500 million keeping streets free of dirt.
D. Cigarette-related litter and peels can be ignored for their fairly short lifetime.
27. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To inform readers of different biodegrading terms.
B. To call for people not to litter illegally.
C. To encourage people to use fewer plastic bags.
D. To stress the importance of good behavior.
CACB

The Benefits
Experts have found that there are clear health benefits of drinking tea. Research has led to the discovery that chemicals found in tea can help prevent cell damage. And there is clear evidence that drinking three to four cups of tea a day will reduce the chances of heart attacks and certain cancers. Other health benefits include bone strengthening and protection against bad teeth."Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water," said one doctor.
Re-hydration
There was also some interesting information on the qualities of tea. The research dispels the fear that tea is dehydrating(脱水). “Everyone assumes that caffeine-containing drinks such as tea dehydrate”, a leading expert explained. “But even if you had a really strong cup of tea, you would still have a gain of fluid. In terms of fluid intake,we recommend 1.5 to 2 litres per day,and that can include tea. Tea is not dehydrating. It's a healthy drink.”.
The Negative Side
There was only one bit of bad news about tea.Research suggests that tea can affect the body's ability to absorb iron from food. This means that people at risk of anaemia(贫血)should avoid drinking tea around mealtimes.
Tea Jokes
Why was the teacher angry with the Teapot? Because he was "naughtea". What did the teapot wear to bed?
A"nightea".

答案:21.D 22. C 23. D
第21题 D 根据题目定位至茶的功效两个板块,在“Benefits”部分中我们可得知, “three or four cups of tea a day will reduce the chances of heart attacks and certain cancers.” “Other health benefits include bone strengthening and protection against bad teeth.”
B
I am proud to be a member of two cultures. Even though I am only ten years old, I have lived in two countries and in two cultures. I have lived in both Mexico and the United States.
I was born in the state of Michoacán. I was born in a small town called Quinceo. Life there was simple and peaceful. There was a small market where we would go on Sundays. There was a corral where we would go and watch rodeos. After school, my friends and I would go for a swim in a creek. My mom did not work; she stayed at home taking care of our family. Life in Quinceo was nice, but money was sometimes not enough to support us.
In 1996, the day came when my dad decided to bring us to the United States. Leaving my town was hard, but it was important that my family stay together. When I left Mexico, I had a lot of special friends and nice teachers.
When I first came to the United States, I started at a new school in Chicago. I found care and company at the school, among Hispanic people, my friends, and my teacher. She helped me all the time.
My education now is different from the one in Mexico. Here, I am studying in two languages. I feel very happy because I am able to communicate in two languages. In my case, speaking Spanish is an indication of my Mexican heritage. Speaking English is a symbol of my triumph and the struggles that I have as an immigrant in this country. Now that I have been here three years, I am proud to offer my help and support to people who need it.
I urge those who come from Mexico and other countries to learn English and to continue speaking their native language, too. It will help them reach out to others.
24.What does the writer think of Mexico?

25.Why did the family move to the US?
A.Because they were in need of more money.

D.Because the author could have new friends.
26.Which of the following statements about the author is WRONG?
A.She wants to be a teacher and support people.
B.She enjoyed company of friends at the new school.
