In dreaming up the prgramme Tennis and Literacy fr Yuth, as a mther, I had hped t share tw f my passins, tennis and reading, with children. Thrughut the year, I had advertised fr participants at lcal elementary schls and recruited(招收) vlunteers at lcal high schls. With the help f kind peple, I applied fr mney. I was even able t secure a site fr the prgramme.
But n the first day f camp, in spite f my careful planning, things did nt g the way I had hped. Hectr and Adrian exchanged blws with their racquets(球拍). Hectr struggled t his feet mments later, cvering a bldy nse with ne hand. Gergie and Eduard threw balls at each ther. Then during reading time, I raced frm jyless child t demanding child, unable t cnvince even ne t pen a bk. They wuld rather be watching Nickelden at hme, Eli tld me, than “learning stupid tennis and reading bring bks.”
I dragged myself hme that afternn. That evening, I called my vlunteers tgether fr a meeting, and redesigned the entire curriculum. We created a gdfellw system, where each vlunteer paired with a camper t help him r her during reading time. T emphasize praise and prgress, we established weekly prize ceremnies, presenting awards fr mst imprved reading, tennis and behavir.
Then Mylea shut the bk and asked me, “Can I take this t read it t my mm tnight?” Peering up at her eager face, I culdn't help myself. I jumped t my feet and wrapped her in a hug, lifting her right ff the grund. “It's all yurs!” I said.
Smehw, in the midst f the chas and the schedule changes and the meetings, these children, in bad md during reading time, untuched bks in their laps, began t find jy in reading a stry.

Why humans make and appreciate music is an evlutinary(进化的) mystery. Recently, David Schruth and his clleagues have a new explanatin. They say the rts f human music can date back t the branches f trees mre than 50 millin years ag, when the first primates(灵长类) appeared. Early primates mved arund frest by leaping(跳跃) frm branch t branch, a very dangerus way t travel that relies n hand and eye wrking tgether and cntrl ver muscles.
Schruth argues that a primate that calls in a musical way is advertising that it has fine cntrl ver its vcal(声音的) muscles. This might have cnvinced ther primates that the caller als had fine cntrl ver its bdy. His anther research shws the species that leap the mst tend t have mre cmplicated calls, which the team jkingly named as “prtmusical”.
Hagen, a wrldwide famus scientist in this field, cmmented n the research:“Sme peple wuld nt include what we see in primates and sngbirds as music. But I d see a cntinuity between human music and primate vcalizatins.”
Hagen desn't think human music has a single, simple explanatin. He argues that human ancestrs riginally used musiclike vcalizatins in tw ways: grups vcalized tgether t send a signal f strength and unity t scare utsiders away, and mthers used vcalizatins t cmmunicate with babies. Als anther idea: humans used music t strengthen scial bnds.
All these ideas might be cmpatible,__says Hagen. Prtmusic culd have evlved in primates bth t attract cmpanins and fr territrial signaling. Later, as early humans began cperating in large numbers, prtmusic might have been repurpsed s it culd attract rather than frighten utsiders, while als strengthening scial bnds within grups.
( )28. What is Schruth's finding?
A. Primates have the mst cmplex calls.
B. Human ancestrs leap arund trees skillfully.
C. Frequent mvements sharpen early human calls.
D. Cmplicated vcalizatins result frm mre leaps.
( )29. What's Hagen's attitude t Schruth's research?
A. Negative. B. Skeptical. C. Supprtive. D. Cautius.
( )30. Which wrd can replace the underlined wrd in the last paragraph?
A. Clever. B. Reasnable. C. Misleading. D. Cntradictry.
( )31. What's the best title f the text?

Mst parents can remember the artful mix f excitement and anxiety accmpanying the chice f their baby's name—it will fllw the child his r her entire life. But the effect culd be even mre significant. In research recently published in the JurnalfPersnalityandScialPsychlgy, ur research team shws that the steretype(模式思维) that a given sciety has f a first name can influence the way peple lk.
In eight studies, we fund that participants shwn IDstyle phts f peple they'd never met were able t recgnize the first name f the described persn well abve the chance level. In ther wrds, there is smething abut an Emily that... just lks like an Emily.
If an Emily really des lk like an Emily, even a cmputer shuld be able t guess her true name. The cmputer was even able t prduce a “heat map” fr each name, a face with the features that “betray” a persn carrying that name shwn in red r range clrs. Hw shuld we understand this effect? Until nw, scial psychlgists knew that ur facial appearance influences the extent t which thers perceive us as attractive, intelligent, trustwrthy r warm. These studies shw that thers' perceptins f ur first name are reflected in ur faces.
Interestingly, the facename effect ccurs even if we can nly see the hair f a persn. Our hair is pssibly the part f ur face that we cntrl with the mst ease. The fact that this alne can prduce the facename effect further illustrates the suspected selffulfilling mechanism behind it.
Tgether, the eight studies suggest that we wear ur scial belnging n ur face, and that we actively shape ur features t be recgnized by ur reference grup. Chsing baby names remains exciting. Whatever the first name yu give t yur child, he r she will end up wearing it.
( )32. What was the participants' assignment?
A. T pick ut IDstyle phts they'd never met.
B. T match strangers' phts with their names.
C. T find ut Emily frm varius ID phts.
D. T perceive Emily's character.
( )33. Hw is the “heat map” frmed?
A. By drawing a map fr each name.
B. By srting ut different faces in a map.
C. By shwing a persn's face in different clrs.
D. By highlighting certain features in warm clrs.
( )34. What is the facename effect?
A. Peple wear their character n their faces.
B. Hairstyle accunts fr a large part in appearance.
C. A fixed idea f first names determines ne's lk.
D. Scial belnging is irrelevant t ur facial features.
( )35. Which f the fllwing shws the structure f the whle text?
