    Pre-reading prvides sme questins and a questinnaire t help students fcus n the tpic f the reading passage and lead the students t think abut any persnal experiences f wrking utside,such as things abut climbing int a live vlcan,ding dangerus wrk,travelling,taking risks,adventure,studying rcks and s n.
    Reading is a first-persn accunt f a vlcanlgist's experiences.He lves his jb very much because he can help prtect rdinary peple frm ne f the mst pwerful frces n earth.His jb is cllecting infrmatin fr a database abut Munt Kilauea and helping ther scientists t predict where lava frm the vlcan will flw next and hw fast.Once,he watched an eruptin and then cllected sme lava fr later study.After many years,he is still enthusiastic abut his jb.Reading cntains a picture that is an abslutely fantastic sight.After a glance at the title f the text and the headlines within it we knw that it is an accunt,in which there are many emtin expressins.Then we can understand the tpic f the text and hw the infrmatin is rganized.
    Cmprehending cnsists f three written r ral exercises fr the students t d s as t help the students t get a better understanding f the text,that is t say,t help the teacher t check hw much the students have understd the text.

    1.While ding Warming Up the teacher can lead in the tpic f this unit by shwing students sme pictures f natural disasters and intrducing sme technical vcabulary cncerning vlcanes t review and develp students' understanding f what a vlcan is.T ask students t cnsider ther natural disasters and the ways humans deal with them.
    2.During Pre-reading the teacher can g arund the classrm and discuss the questins with several students.This discussin shuld be student-centered and aruse students' interest in wrking utside.The teacher shuld als ask the students sme questins and try t let them have a general knwledge f vlcanes.
    3.While ding Reading and Cmprehending,the teacher may first ask the students t read the text quickly t get the general idea f each paragraph.After reading the passage carefully,students are encuraged t answer sme questins and discuss the text structure.

    Sme knwledge abut vlcanes
    There are thusands f vlcanes all ver the wrld.What makes vlcanes?What happens?
    The inside f the earth is very ht.Because it is very,very ht,the rck has melted like ice.It has becme liquid,like water.It is always biling,like water in a kettle.If yu have seen a kettle biling,yu knw that the steam and biling water try t get ut.The very ht melted rck inside the earth als tries t get ut.Usually it cannt because the utside f the earth is t thick and strng.
    But in sme places the utside f the earth is thin and weak.Smetimes a crack(a small pening)appears.The ht melted rck,which we call “lava”,pushes up thrugh the crack and bursts thrugh.Steam and gas sht up int the air and the ht melted lava purs ut.Big pieces f rck may be thrwn high int the air.
    After a while the vlcan becmes quiet again.The melted lava becmes hard.Later the same thing happens again and again.Each time mre ht lava purs ut n tp f the cld lava and then becmes hard.In this way a kind f muntain is built up,with a hle dwn the middle.Perhaps the vlcan will then be quiet and n mre lava will burst ut.Perhaps it will start again hundreds f years later.
    Vesuvius is the name f a very famus vlcan in Italy.It first came t life many,many years ag.It was quiet fr hundreds f years.Then in the year 79 it suddenly burst.A great clud f smke sht up int the sky with great burning rcks,which fell all arund.Ht lava pured dwn its sides.Abut 3000 peple were killed.
    Step 2 Pre-reading

    Why des Tazieff risk his life like this?
    Harun Tazieff,the plish scientist,has spent his lifetime studying active vlcanes and deep caves in all parts f the wrld.In 1948,he went t Lake Kivu in the Cng t bserve a new vlcan which he later named Kitur.Tazieff was able t set up his camp very clsed t the vlcanes while it was erupting vilently.Thugh he managed t take a number f brilliant phtgraphs,he culd nt stay near the vlcanes fr very lng.He nticed that a river f liquid rck was cming twards him.It threatened t surrund him cmpletely.But Tazieff managed t escape just in time,he waited until the vlcanes became quiet and he was able t return tw days later.This time,he managed t climb int the muth f Kitur s that he culd take phtgraphs and measure temperatures.Tazieff has ften risked his life in this way.He has been able t tell us mre abut active vlcanes than any man alive.
