    The United States has mre trnades (龙卷风) than any ther cuntry in the wrld. In a nrmal year there are 800 t 1,000 trnades. Mst happen in the middle part f the cuntry. Trnades frm when warm and cl air meet. In the Midwest, the warm air frm the Gulf f Mexic ften meets the cld air frm Canada.

Peple wh live in the Midwest knw the signs (征兆) f trnad activity. The sky becmes dark, ften a greenish clr. Dark cluds appear in the sky and there is ften large hail (冰雹). Suddenly, there is a lud sund, like a train r a jet plane. Smetimes, tw, three, five, ten r mre trnades can frm ver a large area.


    This type f trnad activity hit Oklahma and Kansas in May 1999. The day was strmy, with heavy thunderstrms in the afternn. As the strms cntinued, trnades began t frm. Dzens f trnades hit twns and neighbrhds in Oklahma, then in Kansas. Sme stayed n the grund fr several hurs, destrying everything they tuched. The trnades killed 43 peple and injured 600 thers. They destryed thusands f hmes and businesses. In sme areas, nt ne hme std. In ther areas, the trnades destryed every hme n the left side f the street, but didn't tuch any hmes n the right side. The trnades lifted peple and cars int the air and then threw them back dwn t earth. S it is imprtant t knw where t hide and hw t prtect yurself in the face f a trnad.
