A deadly virus is spreading from state to state and has infected 26 million Americans so far, killing at least 14,000 people this season alone. It's not a new pandemic—it's influenza.
The 2019 — 2020 flu season, which began September 29,is projected to be one of the worst m a decade, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. At least 250,000 people have been hospitalized with symptoms from the flu? and that number is predicted to climb as flu activity spreads quickly.
Dr. Nathan Chomilo, an assistant professor at University of Minnesota Medical School, said that the commonness of the flu often underplays its severity, but people should take it seriously.
The flu becomes dangerous when secondary infections emerge, the result of an already weakened immune system. Bacterial and viral infections worsen the flu's symptoms. People with chronic illnesses are also at a heightened risk for flu complications.
Those complications include pneumonia((肺炎),inflammation in the heart and brain and organ failure—which, in some cases, can be deadly.
Influenza is tricky because the virus changes every year. Sometimes , the dominant strain in a flu season will be more virulent than in previous years, which can impact the number of people infected and the seventy of their symptoms.
Most of these changes in the virus are small and insignificant, a process called antigenic drift. That year's flu vaccine is mostly effective in protecting patients in spite of these small changes.
Occasionally, the flu undergoes a rare antigenic shift, which results when a completely new strain of virus emerges that human bodies haven experienced before.
This flu season, there's no sign of antigenic shift, the most extreme change. But it's happened before, most recently in 2009 with the H1N1 virus. It became a pandemic because people held no immunity against it,the CDC reported.
28. What do the numbers indicate in the first two paragraphs?
A. The flu is rather serious. B. The flu is quite common.
C. The flu is easy to control. D. The flu season lasts long.
29. When does the flu become dangerous?
A. There appear new symptoms of flu owing to antigenic shift.
B. The number of patients becomes large with the virus spreading.
C. Relative infections turn up because of the weaker immune system.
D. The virus changes its form with no immunity against it.
30. The underlined word "virulent" in paragraph 6 means
A. changeable B. deadly C. peaceful D. different
31. Why is the H1N1 virus in 2009 referred to in the last paragraph?
A. To warn people that the antigenic shift is impossible.
B. To inform people that the virus can be cured.
C. To show people that the vaccine is effective.
D. To remind people that the virus can be changed.
When talking about the economics of online publishing, the first thing to remember is that job No. 1 isn't to get the news to you. Rather, it is to monetize you, by selling you off, in real time, to the highest bidder. This happens every time you click on a link, before the page has even started to load on your phone. Once upon a time, if you and I both visited the same web page at the same time using the same web browser, we would end up seeing the same thing. Today, however •an almost unthinkably enormous ecosystem of scripts and cookies and often astonishingly personal information is used to show you a set of brand messages and sales links which are tailored almost uniquely to you.
That ecosystem raises important questions about privacy——the way that the minute you look at a pair of shoes online, for instance, they then start following you around every other website you visit for weeks. But whether or not you value your privacy, you are damaged, daily. by the sheer weight of all that technology.
Online ads have never got less annoying over time, and you can be sure that mobile ads are going to get more annoying as well, once Silicon Valley has worked out how to better identify who you are. The move to greater privacy protections might help slow the pace with which such technologies are adopted. But there's no realistic hope that websites will actually improve from here. If you want to avoid the dreadful experience of the mobile web, you'11 only have one choice—which is to start reading your articles natively, in the Facebook or Apple News app. But it won't be Facebook and Apple who killed the news brands. It,11 bead tech.
32. What will happen if two people click on the same link today?
A. They will immediately get the news that they want.
B. They will see the same thing whenever they browse.
C. They will see different brand messages and sales links.
D. They will be recommended to the same bidder.
33. Why can the online ads send you the links unique to you?
A. Because the ecosystem knows who you are.
B. Because they know how to identify who you are.
C. Because you don't care about your privacy.
D. Because you always use the same web browser.
34. How could we protect our privacy against mobile ads?
A. By slowing the pace with such technologies.
B. By improving the website functions.
C. By stopping using the mobile phones.
D. By reading articles in specific apps.
35. What's the author's attitude to the ad tech?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Optimistic.

We all experience momentary bursts of anger every now and then. There are things you can do in the moment to calm yourself. though.

When you're angry, you notice it in your body. 36 . If you're not physically feeling it, you might hear it in the sound of your voice.

2. Give yourself a time out.
How do you do the exercise above when you're in the middle of a face-to-face conversation? Call a personal timeout. Walking away gives you time to calm down and collect your thoughts before responding. This also aids in decreasing anger.
Of course, don't just peace out of the argument. Let whoever you're talking to know that you just need a little
physical space.
3. Ask yourself what emotion is behind the anger.
38 . More often than not, anger is a "secondary emotion" we use as a mask or a defense for an entirely different feeling (shame, for instance, or embarrassment).
Once you’re aware of the real emotions at play, you can communicate it to the person you snapped at. Also, you'd apologize to your co-worker and perhaps consider asking your manager to lighten your workload.
4. 39
Let’s say you've taken the advice above, but you're still feeling heated. If so, changing the topic of conversation can also be a good way to cope with anger in the moment. 40 If you were discussing something serious -- or something that needs to be resolved eventually — table the discussion for later or the next day, when cooler heads prevail.
A. Change the subject of the conversation.
B. Stop the conversation with your partner.
C. Anger will do damage to your lungs and heart.
D. Try responding to your loud voice by gradually lowering it.
E. Now that you've calmed down, think about what's motivating your anger.
F. Make a joke and reroute the conversation to a safe, calm, enjoyable dialogue.
G. Anger will often cause changes in our body, such as muscle tension or sore neck.

M: Are you free today or tomorrow? The afternoon show is the best for my brother.
W: Sorry, I’m busy then. I’m going to the cinema this afternoon. I’ve got the ticket so I can’t change it and I’m working tomorrow afternoon.
M: Oh, well... Can you go on Saturday afternoon? It finishes on August 28th. That’s Saturday.
W: Good. I’m free then.
Text 9
M: Guess what — I joined the Cave-exploring Society last month.
W: Seriously? Don’t cave-explorers go down into caves? I thought you were only interested in mountain climbing!
M: I do like to climb, but you know, the two sports have a lot in common. I’ll give you an example: The same technique for climbing down steep rocks is used in both sports. Of course, climbers use this technique to come down hills, while cave-explorers use it to go down holes.
W: What else does your society do?
M: For one thing, we help preserve caves. Believe it or not, some people are so careless that they just leave their litter in caves. And some people even write on cave walls. So we pick up litter and clean away the drawings on the wall.
W: I don’t think I’d like cave-exploring very much. Caves are wet and cold and dark, aren’t they?
M: I suppose they are, but they can also be beautiful. Tell you what, why don’t you come along with me to the meeting tonight? They’ll be showing pictures that we took in a cave last weekend. You’ll see some unbelievable rocks. It might change the way you think about caves.
Text 10
I’m writing to you about the Teacher-Who-Made-a-Difference contest. I think Ms Wells should be the winner of the contest. Ms Wells has done so much for me and for all of her students; this is the least I can do for her. First of all, Ms Wells is helpful. She’s willing to help anyone in the classroom who needs help. My teacher always helps us with worksheets. In addition, Ms Wells is a kind person. Not only is she kind to kids, but she’s also kind to other teachers and parents. She is always thoughtful and considerate. Lastly, Ms Wells devotes her time to kids. She devotes her lunch time to Student Council, which meets in her room. Last fall, Ms Wells promised me that she would come to one of my soccer games. Guess what? She did, even though she had a lot of school stuff to do and had to leave for Chicago. In conclusion, I think Ms Wells should be the winner of the contest. I know you will agree with me that Ms Wells is a teacher who made a difference. She’s the best!
Sincerely,
Melissa

For the most part , though, these relatively minor annoyances are easy to deal with, but walking back your anger when you're having a heated conversation with someone is a lot more difficult. There are things you can do in the moment to calm yourself. though.
1. Acknowledge that you; re angry.
When you're angry, you notice it in your body. 36 . If you're not physically feeling it, you might hear it in the sound of your voice.
Once you notice this, try to adjust your voice. Just as increasing anger can correspond to an increasingly loud voice, so can the opposite. 37

W: You probably shouldn’t be looking to Facebook to get news. There is a lot of fake information on it.
Text 4
W: Our Wild Life Protection Group is looking for more people to join. I thought you might be interested.
M: Oh, I’d love to, but this is my last year in the middle school. I’m quite busy with my lessons.
Text 5
W: Whose car is it in front of my house?
M: It is yours, Madam. Congratulations! An air company decided that you won the painting competition which was held last month.
W: Are you sure? I can’t believe it.
Text 6
W: My history teacher gave us a surprising quiz and I couldn’t remember anything. My mind went totally blank. I couldn’t believe it.
M: That happened to me once. It was a math quiz, but it wasn’t a surprise. I just got the date of the test wrong.
W: What grade did you get? A or D?
M: No, I got a C.
W: At least a C is passing. I’m going to get an F.
M: You need to take it easy. Why don’t you go home and have a good rest?
W: I have another test at two. I need to go to the library to hit the books.
M: What a day you’re having!

W: What do you do for a living?
M: I’m a journalist.
W: Really? I have great respect for you guys. Do you work for a newspaper or a television channel?
M: I work for an online news agency.
W: Great. When I was in college, I was keen on becoming a journalist, but my parents didn’t support me. They felt that journalism was a risky field to be in, though they are well-paid and do a lot of traveling.
M: Yes, journalists have to take a lot of risks and challenges. Sometimes we risk our own lives in our quest to find the truth. But the satisfaction we get is huge. Actually, that’s what keeps us in this job.
W: You are right. Job satisfaction is far more important than job safety.

M: Have you heard that the Strawberry Music Festival is being held near here?
W: Yeah. I know. It sounds good, and I’d like to go. But I haven’t got a ticket.
M: I’m interested in it too, and I got some tickets to the festival. I’m taking my little brother. He has never been to a music festival. Would you like to come too?
W: That would be great. I love the noise, the music and all the excitement.

Sincerely,
Melissa
