Researchers at the University of Maryland have re-designed the material to make it entirely not affected to light, while only absorbing the slightest levels of light. Rather than absorbing sunlight, the new wood could bounce it right back into the environment. In effect homes made from this material would be able to prevent almost all heat from seeping(渗透)indoors* potentially easing our reliance on air conditioning in summer months.
"Reducing human dependence on energy-inefficient cooling methods such as air conditioning would have a large effect on the global energy landscape(景观)," the researchers note in the study. To make that kind of "cooling*' wood, scientists used hydrogen peroxide to get rid of the lignin(木质素), a support part in the cell walls of trees.
What's more, the lignin-free wood allows heat produced indoors to escape. That's because indoor heat occupies a slightly different wavelength than your garden variety sunlight a wavelength that doesn't get repulsed( 排斥)by the new wood. So by day, the suns heat is kept, and at night ・ indoor heat enters the environment, although the team admits this could be a problem when it comes to actually keeping heat indoors.
Another benefit to wood made entirely of cellulose? It's unbelievably strong. The University of Maryland team claims the new wood packs an extendable strength of around 401 megapascals, or more than eight times that of natural wood. That puts it somewhere in the neighborhood of steel.
"Wood has been used for thousands of years and has appeared as an important sustainable building material to potentially replace steel and concrete because of its economic and environmental advantages,” the authors note. That kind of strength, in addition to the insulation(绝缘)aspect・ could make the new wood a solid candidate for transforming the concrete and steel jungle of a city into something closer to a real jungle.
28. Why can the new wood stop heal entering the house?
A. It fails to absorb any sunlight. B. It is equipped with a cooling system.
C. li can reflect the light back into the air. D. It is mainly made up of a new kind of lignin.
29. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The ways that heat escapes outside.
B. The benefit of using air-conditioning.
C. The great importance of using the new wood.
D. The reason why the new wood can cool the house.
30. What can we infer about the new wood from the last paragraph?
A. It is stronger than the steel. B. It is environment-friendly.
C. It has been used in abundance. D. It will make cities quite bushy.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Science. B. Health. C. Agriculture. D. Education.

Photographic self-portraits have existed for as long as cameras have been in human hands. But what about selfies(自拍)in space? On Twitter last year, NASA astronaut Edwin Buzz Aldrin, who famously became the second man to walk on the moon in July 1969, laid claim to a spaceflight first; taking the first selfie in space during the Gemini Xll mission(任务)in 1966.
"For me, it needs to be digital to he a selfie." argues Jennifer Levasseur. a director at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. According to Levasseur, the concept of a selfie is directly linked to internet culture. "The thing that makes a selfie a selfie is sharing it/* she says.
Still, astronauts have been carrying cameras aboard space vehicles since the 1960s. In 1966,, Aldrin used a Hasselblad camera designed specifically for space, with an extra-large trigger (触发器)to accommodate the astronaut's thick gloves. Hasselblad also painted the first camera in space a matte((磨 砂)black to reduce reflections in the orbiter window. But cameras used in space need to survive extreme conditions, like temperature swings from - 149° to 248°F, so Hasselblad painted later models silver.
Astronauts visiting the moon then had to take out the film magazines and leave their camera bodies behind when they returned to Earth, because early space missions were limited by a weight limit on the return trip. Then a big change in space camera technology came after the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on its ret urn to Earth in 2003 . Levasseur notes. "Fear that they'd never be able to bring film back from space and lose all that hard work” accelerated the push for digital, she says.
Today, astronauts also have access to internet and social platforms in space and can post true space selfies made using digital cameras. Similarly, space robots are participating in selfie culture, capturing (拍摄)remote pictures of themselves in space or on other planets and sending them back to Earth.
32. Why do selfies in space need to be digital according to Jennifer Levasseur?
A. Astronauts are fond of studying technology.
B. Astronauts are eager to improve themselves.
C. Astronauts desire to communicate on social platforms.
D. Astronauts want to take some related information back.
33. Why can the Hasselblad camera adjust to the temperature changes in space?
A. It is painted silver. B. Its matte black gathers light.
C .Its trigger is large enough. D. It can reduce reflection itself.
34. What contributed to the faster development of camera technology in space9
A. The heavy space tasks. B. A spaceflight crash.
C. A damaged space shuttle. D. The improved film.
35. What can he a suitable title for the text?
A. The Origin of Selfies in Space B. The Popularity of Selfies in Space
C. The Significance of Selfies in Space D. The Brief History of Selfies in Space
