Most people probably wondered who would voluntarily choose to live in a cooperative house with 14 other people. Well I would, and for me, it's one of the best decisions I've made for myself.
The house has three floors and 15 bedrooms. It has communal spaces such as the kitchen, bathrooms, living room, and big old dining table, where we talk, laugh, disagree, play games, learn from each other, and most importantly break bread together.
My housemates and I share the housework and do the cook cycle, which generally means cooking dinner for the house about once every two weeks and we attend weekly house meetings where we make decisions about the operations of the house together.
What I worried most about at first was how my son might feel about the new housing situation. To my surprise, he loved it by the first visit to the house! He has never complained about this house being smaller than his dad’s. One of my housemates has two children at his age, so he now has two new friends. This is important for me as a parent because I want to teach him that happiness doesn’t come from the size of your home, but from the love that is inside.
When I lived with a roommate in college, we never discussed about any agreements on quiet hours, cleaning up the communal areas and so on. Every cause of conflict during that time was due to lack of communication. On the contrary, in our house we talk about and have policies on almost everything.
Besides less cost on housing, I'm more concerned about the connection with other people that I was longing for. Cooperative living isn’t for everyone, but with increasing costs of living and decreasing connection with other people, it can definitely be a great option for more people.
24. What might the underlined “break bread” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Earning bread. B. Cooking dinner.
C. Having dinner. D. Baking bread.
25. How does the son feel about living in this house?
A. It's small and crowded. B. It's fun with new friends.
C. It’s annoying in discussions. D. It's tiring to do cleaning.
26. Why does the author mention her college life?
A. To stress the necessity of communication and rules.
B. To convey the gratitude to her roommates.
C. To show the importance of good relationships.
D. To express the regret at those wasted days.
27. What matters most for the author’s choice of cooperative living?
A. Cutting down on living cost.
B. Learning to be independent.
C. Offering a home for her son.
D. Getting connected with people.

For several months, Cara has been working up the courage to approach her mom about what she saw on Instagram. Not long ago, the 11-year-old girl, like all the other kids in this story, discovered that her mom had been posting her photos for much of her life. “I’ve wanted to say no. It’s strange to see myself up there, and sometimes there are pictures I don’t like of myself,” she said.
Like most other modern kids, Cara grew up exposed to social media. While many kids may not yet have accounts themselves, their parents, schools, sports teams, and organizations have been organizing an online presence for them since birth. The shock of realizing that details about your life have been shared online without your permission or knowledge has become an important experience in the lives of many teenagers. Recently a parenting blogger (博主)wrote in a Washington Post essay that despite (不顾)her 14-year-old daughter’s horror at discovering that her mother had shared years of highly personal stories and information about her online, she simply could not stop posting on her blog and social media. The writer said that promising her daughter that she would stop posting about her publicly on the Internet would “mean shutting down a vital part of myself, which isn’t necessarily good for me or her.” Average parents do the same. There’s even a special word for it: sharenting. Almost a quarter of children begin their digital lives when parents upload their photos to the Internet, according to a study conducted by the Internet-security firm AVG. The study also found that 92 percent of kids under the age of 2 already have their own unique digital identity.
28. How does Cara feel about her mom’s behavior?
A. It’s aggressive. B. It’s appropriate.
C. It’s annoying. D. It’s favorable.
29. Why did the parenting blogger post about her daughter online?
A. Because it filled up her blog. B. Because it showed off her success.
C. Because it recorded her stories. D. Because it meant a lot to her.
30. Who are fond of sharenting?
A. A quarter of students. B. Most ordinary parents.
C. Kids under the age of 2. D. Some crazy bloggers.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Children’s New Trouble B. Social Media
C. Kids’ Online Performance D. Mommy Bloggers
D
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Other than flying and communicating with someone from his mind (which, let’s be honest, would probably actually be awful), breathing underwater is one of the favorites. You can hang out with Aquaman and Ursula, and when the end of the world comes and we’re all living under water, you’ll be fine.
With this in mind, a student at the Royal College of Art, London has designed a 3D-printed amphibious garment called AMPHIBIO — essentially a set of gills(鳃) — for this very purpose. According to Jun Kamei, a biomimicry designer and materials scientist, it is "for a future where humankind lives in the water".
With the world set for a global temperature increase of 3.2°C (5.7°F) by 2100, rising sea levels are a very real threat to large coastal cities, potentially affecting up to 2 billion people — or 26 percent of the current global population.
Kamei’s little device uses a specially designed porous(多孔的) material that fills oxygen again in the water and releases carbon dioxide. It is inspired by water-diving insects that create their own little scuba diving set by creating a protective bubble of air around their body thanks to their water repellent(防水的) skin.
The technology is easily 3D-printable too, which will be great when we need them together. These "gills" could replace heavy and clumsy scuba equipment, making it more similar to free diving but for longer. This could have immediate applications for underwater rescue plans — the 12 boys rescued by divers from a flooded cave in Thailand, for example, where it took weeks to work out how to get the boys and the vital breathing equipment through those narrow tunnels.
So far, the tech has only been tested as a working prototype, not actually on humans, so the dream may have to be on hold for now. And scaling up and testing on humans is Kamei’s next plan. This may sound unbelievable, but Kamei insists he has a much more optimistic vision of the future.
32. What can be inferred about Aquaman and Ursula?
A. They can read minds. B. They can breathe underwater.
C. They often cause huge disasters. D. They can’t live underwater.
33. What can we learn about AMPHIBIO?
A. It can produce oxygen in the water.
B. Its user can communicate with others from their mind.
C. It is the unique useful tool against the threat of rising sea levels.
D. The designer drew his inspiration from nature’s hidden design.
34. Why did the author mentioned the rescue of the boys in Thailand?
A. To present the success of the new device.
B. To compare the new device with the old one.
C. To prove the advantage of the new device.
D. To show the new device is easily 3D-printable.
35. What is the author’s attitude to the future of the new design?
A. Objective. B. indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever received an invitation that you couldn’t accept? Does it bother you to turn someone down? Do you struggle with how to refuse without hurting someone's feelings, causing conflict? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. 36 The key is to let the person know whether or not you can accept the invitation as soon as possible and in a polite manner. Here are some tips on how to refuse an invitation in a most polite way.
Don’t wait and don't ignore the invitation.
As soon as you know you'll be unable to go, let the person know. 37 He needs to know whether or not you will be there. Putting the invitation aside to deal with later isn't good for you or the person who sends it and ignoring the invitation shows that you don’t know proper etiquette(礼仪), so you might be removed from the guest list for his next party.
38
Always sincerely thank the person for inviting you and let him know that you are honored that he thinks highly enough of you to send the invitation
Don't tell lies and don't explain too much
You don’t have to come up with false excuses for why you're unable to go to the event, but you also don’t have to explain it in details. 39 That should be enough. And remember that when you give reasons, keep your explanation short and to the point. Explaining too much will make it sound like you're just trying to make up excuses.
Ask for a different time.
40 In that situation, let the person know you are unable to make it at the time he requests, but you'd love to get together with him at another time
A. Most events require planning and budgeting.
B. Your timely response will be highly appreciated.
C. In fact, this happens to most people in their lives.
D. Let him know that you already have plans.
E. Respond in a most polite way as soon as possible.
F. Sometimes the invitation is only sent to you.
G. Express appreciation for the invitation.
