A few days ago I was sitting in a Thai restaurant enjoying a meal when I got a phone call from a friend I hadn’t spoken to for a long time. Full of enthusiasm and excitement I talked slightly louder than usual and in Spanish, my mother tongue.
A few minutes into the call the lady sitting beside me got up, seemingly upset, and asked the restaurant staff to relocate her to a table as far away as possible from “this man who won’t get off his phone”
I sank in my seat out of embarrassment. I ended the call soon afterwards and felt the urge to go over and apologize. Before getting up I looked around to see where she was and I found she was, indeed, at the table furthest away from me. I noticed that the lady was alone and staring out of the window, looking a bit sad.
Right then I quit my plan for a conventional apologetic gesture and decided to conduct an experiment. Seeing those funny smile cards in my wallet, I took one out. When signing my check I asked the waiter to secretly charge the lady’s meal to my credit card instead of her bill.
I left the restaurant, letting the waiter know I would be back in a few hours to pick up my credit card. I returned later as promised, excited to learn the result.
To my pleasant surprise, things turned out the best possible way. A group of restaurant staff approached me with joy, telling me that the lady had dined there many times, but they had never seen her smile and laugh like she did upon receiving the smile card and the $0 check.
    4. Why did the lady ask the restaurant staff to relocate her?

    6. According to the text, the lady_______.

    C. was unfriendly to others  D. was particular about where she sat
    7. What is the best title for the text?
A.A poor lonely lady             B.An improper phone call
C.A smile card apology         D.An unpleasant experience
    C
Some people don’t mind being fat. Other people can keep slim(苗条) without any effort. But a lot of people do put on weight and don’t like it. The question is, what can they do about it?
Some believe exercise can be helpful. But the trouble is that it only makes you want to eat more. You might sweat out a couple of pounds playing tennis or climbing a mountain, but you put it all back on again with a big steak or bread and jam.
A helpful way is food choosing. But what sort of food should you choose? Some believe that the less they eat, the slimmer they will be. They don’t eat anything until they become weak with hunger. Some stick to milk and bananas. You’ll find you need a lot of bananas, and unless you live where they grow, they aren’t cheap. Another says that if you eat things like hard-boiled eggs, and apples with their skins on which are hard for your stomach to digest(消化),the more you eat, the thinner you get. This is because you use up the fat in your body to get the energy to digest the food.
For most of us these methods are too extreme(极端的). The simplest way is just to cut down on the carbohydrates(糖类) that means not eating bread, potatoes, cakes, sugar, rice, and so on and eating anything else you like. It’s straight forward and often quite effective.
Still others like to be more scientific. They get a table, which tells them that, for example, 100 grams of roast leg of lamb gives you 330 calories and a 50 gram helping of pudding gives you 130 calories.
    8. There seems nothing wrong with exercise except that __________.
    A. it makes you sweat       B. it makes you eat more   C. it tires you out        D.it’s hard work
9.According to the passage, the best way to keep slim is _________.
    A. exercising          B. hunger      C. food-choosing       D. eating milk and bananas
    10. The practical method suggested here means __________ .
    A. sticking to bananas        B. eating as little as possible
    C. not eating many carbohydrates    D. eating things that are hard to digest.
    11. Which of the following do you think is the best title for the passage?
    A. Don’t Eat Too Much           B. Food and Health
    C. Ways to Keep Fit              D. Various Ways of Losing Weight

In today’s American, if you spend much time with educators and policy makers, you’ll hear a lot of the following words: “standards” “results” “skills” “self-control” and so on. A look at what goes on in most classrooms these days makes it clear that when people think about education, they are not thinking about what it fells like to be a child, or what makes childhood an important stage of life in its own right.
The thing that set children apart from adults is not their ignorance, nor their lack of skills. It’s their ability for joy. Becoming educated should not require giving up joy but rather lead to finding joy in kinds of things; reading novels instead of playing with small figures, conducting experiments instead of sinking cups in the bathtub, for example. In some cases, schools should help children find new, more grown-up ways of doing the same things that keep them joyful; making art, making friends, making decisions, etc.
However, many of the assignments and rules schools come up with treat pleasure and joy as the enemies of competence and responsibility. Children should learn to delay pleasure and joy so that they can pursue abstract goals, like going to college. Not only is this a boring and awful way to treat children, but it can’t be forced to think carefully, enjoy books, or digest complex information.
Building on a child’s ability to feel joy, rather than pushing it aside, would require a shift in the education world’s mindset(思维模式). instead of trying to get children to work hard, why not focus on getting them to take pleasure in meaningful, productive activities, like working with others, exploring ideas, and solving problems? These focuses are not different from the things in which they delight.
Joy should not be trained out of school or left for after-school programs. It doesn’t run counter to the goals of public education. It is, in fact, the primary condition.
    12. Many of the assignments and rules of schools are considered_________.
    A. too abstract for children to understand.   B. to set studying against pleasure
    C. reasonable to achieve educational goals D. To focus on children’s joy
    13. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
    A. Educators are thinking about school education in a proper way.
    B. The ability to feel joy often differs from the competence to study.
    C. Education should help children find joy in more grown-up ways.
    D. Having children work requires changing educators’ mindset.
    14. The underlined expression “run counter to” in the last paragraph probably means________.
    A. go against          B. keep back   C. make for            D. approve of
    15. The author of the passage intends to ________.
    A. indicate joy is what schools lack        B. discuss where education leads
    C. question children’s ability to feel joy   D. prove activity creates responsibility

It has been three month since I left the junior high school. Besides, there’s one thing I’ll never forget it. It was my turn to give an English speech in class. I feel worried because of my poorly spoken English. So I went to Miss Lee for help. Not only did she comfort me, but suggested I could be confident enough and gave me some valuable advices. And then I practiced the speech for nearly two hours at home every day. With my great joy, my speech was success. It was the teacher’s encouragement which helped me get courage. If Miss Lee hasn’t helped me, I couldn’t have enjoyed the success.
Through the experience, I know that when we have difficulty we should never be afraid to ask other for help and I am glad to live in this world filling with love.

    Dear fellow students,
As you all know, our government is trying to make our city a National Civilized City. We hope we can also do our bits to help achieve this goal.
First of all, we should mind our language and be civilized speakers. Always remember to say “Please” and “Thanks” and don’t talk or laugh loudly in public. When seeing people in trouble, we might as well lend them a helping hand. In addition, be civilized pedestrians. We must obey traffic rules and never cross the streets when the traffic lights are red. Keeping our environment nice and clean is also advisable, which means we shouldn’t litter or spit in public places. Only by starting with the little things around us can we make a big difference to our city image.
Let’s take action now and make joint efforts to make our city more civilized.
