James Harris Jr. f Glen Burnie, Maryland, and Russ Redhead f Lancaster, Pennsylvania, first met abut a decade ag at The Bank Sht Bar & Grill in Maryland, where they were playing against each ther in an American Plplayers Assciatin turnament.
At the time, the tw were cmpeting fr the tp prize, an all-expenses paid trip t Las Vegas, allwing the winner t cmpete further in the turnament fr a bigger reward.
After lsing t Harris, Redhead was upset and tk his frustratin t Facebk, criticizing Harris in a pst at the time. Hwever, mutual (共有的) friends wh had seen the pst later defended Harris in the cmment sectin, urging Redhead t eventually take the pst dwn and aplgize t Harris.
“And then I learned ver time that Harris is actually a really gd guy,” Redhead, 42, tld the media, “And, yu knw, we went t ther turnaments tgether, we wuld bet n peple tgether and stuff like that... s we really started t bnd frm there.”
Over the years, that bnd grew, and the tw ended up spending mre time with each ther and sharing their passin fr pl cmpetitins.
In 2020, Harris, wh had been suffering frm kidney (肾) disease, was tld he had cmplete kidney failure. He said the medical staff at the University f Maryland Medical Center immediately wheeled him int surgery s they culd get him n dialysis (透析).
“I didn’t knw dialysis means yur kidneys are n lnger wrking. S that means yu need a transplant — but they dn’t spring all that n yu at nce,” recalled Harris, nw 54, wh was later placed n the UMMC transplant waiting list, with the understanding that he might wait years fr a matching dnr kidney, accrding t the hspital.
Harris’ wife Denise vlunteered t becme his kidney dnr and went thrugh the testing prcess. But it turned ut that she was a mismatch.

Several f the students sat up straighter and cut their eyes at each ther. Oh, well. “We’re ging t d things a little differently in this class because I knw that all f yu want a challenge.”
By nw, every student was staring at me with a puzzled expressin.
“First ff, let’s rearrange these desks,” I said. “I like lts f class discussin, s let’s put them in a big circle s we can all see each ther’s faces.” Several f the kids rlled their eyes, but they all rse and did as I said. “Nw, everybdy chse a seat and let’s play a game. When I pint t yu, tell me what yu hate mst abut histry.”
Finally, sme smiles. And lts mre as ur game prgressed. Students began sharing everything they disliked abut histry. Everyne talked. We had just made ur way arund the circle when the bell rang. Wh knew fifty minutes culd pass s quickly?
Armed with the feedback frm my students, I began hatching a plan. N teaching straight frm the textbk. N “read the chapter and answer the questins at the end” hmewrk. These kids were bright and mtivated. My hnrs class deserved t be taught in a way that cnnected with them.
We’d study scial and ecnmic histry, nt just battles and generals (将军). We’d tie current events int past events. We’d read nvels t help us understand the humanity f histry. Tests wuld cver the facts, but als require higher level thinking skills.
