Every year, billins f peple travel acrss brders. While mst trips are frm ne nn-English speaking cuntry t anther, English is the main language used fr cmmunicatin. In fact, cmmunicatin in English between tw nn-native speakers is generally nt a prblem. The real prblem is when a nn-native is faced with a fast-speaking native English speaker.
English wrds tend t merge(合并) tgether much mre frequently than wrds in mst languages. This has even given rise t infrmal new spellings f wrd pairs: ain’t = am nt, gnna = ging t. Anther issue is with speech itself. When native English speakers talk, they dn’t necessarily fllw a lgical structure, nr d they knw exactly what their arrival pint will be. This means they might mve frward a bit and then g backwards, and fill their speech with redundancy(多余). Actually anyne can ntice this redundancy in their wn language, but it’s hard t understand it in a freign language.
When yu talk with a native English speaker, the trick is t find ways t tune ut all the nise and identify the key wrds. T tell the essential frm the nn-essential, yu shuld fcus nly n the lud and lng wrds. These wrds tend t be the key wrds. If yu can understand at least these wrds, then yu shuld be able t make sense f the verall speech. A gd way t see this in actin is by watching a presentatin n TED.cm and reading the transcript (文字记录) at the same time. This will help yu identify which wrds the speaker stresses.
Hwever, under the best cnditins, peple nly take in 40% f what they hear in their native language. Even many native speakers dn’t always understand each ther, pssibly due t different accents. We might ignre, frget, r misunderstand abut 75% f what we hear. Therefre, if yu dn’t understand smething, it is OK t ask fr clarificatin(说明).

A.The characteristics f English wrds.
B.The difficulties f learning English well.
C.The prblems f talking with nn-native English speakers.
D.The reasns why it is hard t understand native English speakers.
9. Hw can listeners effectively recgnize key wrds in spken English?
A.By repeatedly listening t TED talks.
B.By ignring backgrund nise during the speech.
C.By fcusing n the lng wrds that a speaker stresses.
D.By reading the transcript f the speech befre listening.
10. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
A.Peple can just remember 75% f what they hear.
B.Understanding native English speakers fully is hard.
C.Keeping calm will help yu receive mre infrmatin.
D.Misunderstandings are nt cmmn amng native speakers.
11.What is a suitable title fr the text?

Yu and yur best friend have a lt in cmmn: yur favrite fd, yur taste in music, and maybe yur hmetwn. But a new study finds that yur similarities may even extend t the genetic level.

Fr the findings, the study authrs have a few theries. Maybe peple with similar genes seek ut similar envirnments and then meet thers like them. Or, peple wh share DNA culd have cmparable skill sets, s they wrk tgether better ver lng perids f evlutinary(进化的)time.
The study has a few limitatins. Fr ne, the team didn’t lk acrss the entire human genme-they cmpared nly abut 500,000 f each persn’s three billin DNA base pairs. Fr anther, even thugh the researchers remved anyne wh was related in any way, Framingham’s ppulatin is made up mstly f descendants f Italian and Irish immigrants, s the genetic differences may nt be large enugh t make a wider-reaching cnclusin. But the study such as this culd influence theries abut hw altruism(利他主义)has develped ver evlutinary time.
Of curse, Fwler and Christakis dn’t have all the infrmatin yet. Interestingly, they fund that the biggest genetic similarities were fund in friends’ sense f smell. They’re nt quite sure why that wuld be the case, but future studies may help them find ut the answers.
