I enjyed being in nature. Visiting nearby natural places made me feel better when living alne in Ri de Janeir. T find different cmmunities that had unique relatinships with nature, I mved t Manaus in the Amazn Rainfrest t feel the energy f the frest and see the lcal peple’s integratin with the frest. I discvered we can have many relatinships with nature that aren’t always detrimental t thse places. They tk care f the land and cultivated these gardens filled with fruits and nuts we lved eating withut harming the frest. I think many peple unaware f hw the lcal cmmunities have shaped a “cmpletely” natural space. The Amazn Rainfrest is nt just created by natural prcesses.
Ding research in the field culd be a big challenge. We ften went t really islated places when ding field wrk in the Amazn Rainfrest. We were aware that if anything happened t us, we culd die. If a venmus snake were t bite yu ut there, yu wuld be in a dangerus situatin. We needed t manage thse feelings while ding ur wrk and cllecting data.
I wrked n an article abut hw we culd engage native knwledge in cnservatin science. We had held small meetings with five native researchers, talking abut hw they viewed the Amazn Rainfrest and trying t understand hw we culd maintain the Amazn Rainfrest in the future. These cnversatins led me t start reflecting n hw we did science.
I submitted ur paper t tw ther scientific jurnals befre it was accepted. At the time, I didn’t feel that the article was gd enugh t be published in a majr scientific jurnal like Science. I tried ther jurnals and was rejected immediately. My cauthrs and supervisrs said that we had nthing t lse by submitting it t Science. We tried again and they accepted it. That experience has shwed me that we need t cmmit urselves t what we think we shuld d. We cannt give up when it cmes t science. We need determinatin.

Nearly tw decades ag, Facebk explded n cllege campuses as a site fr students t stay in tuch. Then came Twitter, where peple psted abut what they had fr breakfast, and Instagram, where friends shared phts t keep up with ne anther.
Tday, the kinds f psts where peple update friends and family abut their lives have becme harder t see ver the years as the biggest sites have becme increasingly “crpratized (企业化的) .” Instead f seeing messages and phts frm friends and relatives abut their hlidays r fancy dinners, users f Instagram, Facebk, TikTk, Twitter and Snapchat nw ften view prfessinalized cntent frm brands, influencers and thers that pay fr placement.
The change has impacted large scial netwrking cmpanies and hw peple interact with ne anther digitally. As big scial netwrks made cnnecting peple with brands a much greater fcus than cnnecting them with ther peple, sme users have started seeking sites targeting cmmunities and apps devted t specific hbbies and issues. “Platfrms as we knew them are ver,” said Zizi Papacharissi, a cmmunicatins prfessr at the University f Illinis Chicag. “They have utlived their usefulness.”
The shift helps explain why sme scial netwrking cmpanies are nw explring new fields f business. Fr users, this means that instead f spending all their time n ne r a few big scial netwrks, sme are turning t smaller, mre fcused sites. These include Nextdr, a scial netwrk fr neighbrs.
“It's nt abut chsing ne netwrk t rule them all—that is crazy Silicn Valley lgic,” said Ethan Zuckerman, a prfessr f public plicy at the University f Massachusetts Amherst. “The future is that yu’re a member f dzens f different cmmunities because as human beings, that's hw we are. The idea that a new scial media site might cme alng t be the ne app fr everyne appears unrealistic. Peple’s nline identities will becme increasingly fragmented (碎片化的) amng multiple sites.”
What des the authr say abut the current majr scial netwrking sites?
    A. Their cntent is getting mre and mre lifestyle-fcused.
    B. Their users’ interest in prfessinal cntent is decreasing.
    C. They fail t prvide adequate supprt fr cllege cmmunities
    D. They nw rarely see updates abut friends’ and family’s lives.
What is Zizi Papacharissi' attitude twards traditinal scial media platfrms?
    A. Psitive. B. Negative. C. Neutral D. Indifferent.
What can we infer frm the last paragraph abut future scial media usage?
    A. Peple will chse nline apps mre carefully.
    B. Peple will change their nline identities at will.
    C. Peple will jin numerus specialized cmmunities.
    D. Peple will prefer t use traditinal scial platfrms
What wuld be the best title fr the text?
    A. The rise f the crpratized tech giants. B. The evlutin f scial media platfrms.
    C. The histry f scial netwrking cmpanies.D. The challenges faced by majr platfrms.
    D
N ne likes interruptin. We are brn t seek balance and rder. N matter what it is that yu are ding, being interrupted invlves a frceful stp midway and then having t re-enter yur previus state, smetimes with great difficulty.
Ppular belief has it that interruptin breaks the flw f yur thinking and affects prductivity negatively, and s it is advisable that yu have an uninterrupted sessin f intensive wrk befre yur next break.
Hwever, a Russian psychlgist, Bluma Zeigarnik, might tell yu therwise.
The cnnectin between interruptin and memry came t her attentin when she was dining in a restaurant. She nticed hw the waitresses had an amazing memry f the detailed rders yet t be paid fr, but scarce memry f the rders that were already cmpleted.
Back in her labratry, she cnducted studies in which subjects were required t cmplete varius puzzles. Sme f the subjects were interrupted during the tasks. All the subjects were then asked t describe what tasks they had dne. It turns ut that adults remembered the interrupted tasks 90% better than the cmpleted tasks, and that children were even mre likely t recall the uncmpleted tasks. In ther wrds, uncmpleted tasks will stay n yur mind until yu finish them!
In cmparisn t tasks that were already finished and nes that we haven’t even started, half-dne prjects are given the pririty in the mental t-d list ur brains sketch ut fr us. Zeigarnik described this finding in her dctral thesis (论文) in the late 1920s, which was later called Zeigarnik effect.
One pssible explanatin is that with interrupted tasks, we are desperate fr their clsure t reclaim a sense f balance. Finishing them als means that we can finally clear up the mental backlg (积压的工作) and give the space t mre upcming tasks.
Zeigarnik’s effect can be fund everywhere, especially used in media and advertising. Have yu ever wndered why cliffhangers wrk s well r why yu just can’t get yurself t stp watching that series n Netflix?
Ernest Hemingway nce said abut writing a nvel, “It is the wait until the next day that is hard t get thrugh.” S next time, when yu are interrupted, appreciate it and take advantage f it t prmte yur prductivity.
What is a cmmn practice t finish a task?
    A. Wrking in a fcused perid.B. Wrking with ccasinal breaks.
    C. Wrking with a stp midway.D. Wrking in an interrupted sessin.
What is the finding f the Zeigarnik’s experiment?
    A. Interruptin recalls details.B. Interruptin disturbs balance.
    C. Interruptin betters memry.D. Interruptin reduces prductivity.
What is the pssible reasn behind Zeigarnik’s effect?
    A. The desire fr balance.B. The physical backlg.
    C. The utside pressure.D. The upcming tasks.
Which f the fllwing is an example f the applicatin f Zeigarnik’s effect?
    A. Fashin shws.B. Online news.
    C. Talk shws.D. TV series.

Perhaps we dn’t feel we deserved it, r we dn’t think it was a respnsible way t spend ur mney. But shuld we feel like this? D we really have t feel guilty abut treating urselves?
Perhaps nt. Psychlgists have suggested that buying things fr yurself can make yu feel better as it prvides an pprtunity t take cntrl f yur situatin. 37 . It may be that as well as lifting yur md, when yu buy a treat, yu might just be lking after yurself.
Of curse, there are als examples f peple turning t destructive behaviur when faced with stressful circumstances. Peple might spend mney that they dn’t have r turn t dangerus addictins. Psychlgist Len Seltzer cnsiders the difference between self-indulgence and self-nurturing. 38 , while self-nurturing is taking respnsible decisins t satisfy ur needs and take care f urselves in ways that dn’t have a significant impact.
39 . S, many universities publish guides with advice fr cping with exam stress. Reflecting the difference between self-indulgence and self-nurture, they recmmend rewarding yurself fr yur effrts, ding things that yu enjy and are gd at s that yu can feel accmplishment. 40 .
