Abandoned by a breeder (饲养动物的人) at only eight weeks old because she was deaf, Puppy
had a tough start in life. But less than a month after being saved, the little dog is learning to recognize sign language commands with her new family.
Marie Williams, 41, and her partner Mark Morgan, 43, who are themselves both deaf, adopted
the little dog from the animal charity The Blue Cross. The couple and their three sons Liam, 16, Lewis, 13, and Owen, 5, who have normal hearing, are teaching the loving dog sign language commands, including instructions for sit, come and roll over.
Marie Williams, from West Mersea, Essex, said, “We were thinking about getting a dog but
when we saw Puppy was deaf we just could not believe it. She was so beautiful and the fact that she was deaf just made us fall in love with her even more—we knew that she would fit right into our family. ”
The distinctive dog, who has one blue eye, was dirty, sick and nervous when she was abandoned
by a breeder who decided the deaf dog would not make him any money.
Miss Williams said, “I feel so angry that someone abandoned her because in his eyes she was
not ‘perfect’. It goes to show with a little effort it is easy to cope with a deaf puppy—she has already learned the signs for several basic commands. I want everyone to see how well we have bonded with Puppy and how well she is getting on—she is so special to us. ”
Julie Stone, manager of The Blue Cross, said, “It was amazing to see how Marie, Mark and their
children immediately bonded with Puppy and how they knew just how to get her attention. They are a brilliant match and Puppy has found the perfect home where I know that she will get the love she deserves. ”
The Blue Cross, which depends entirely on public donations, rehomes thousands of dogs, cats,
horses, and small animals every year through its network of adoption centers.
24. What can we infer from the text?
A. A deaf dog is good at learning sign language.
B. A deaf dog tends to get along well with deaf people.
C. A deaf dog is clever enough to learn all commands.
D. A deaf dog can be trained and become a wonderful pet.
25. What did Marie and Mark decide to do when they saw Puppy?
A. Take care of her regularly. B. Send for an animal doctor.
C. Take her home. D. Look for a new home for her.
26. What can we know about The Blue Cross according to the text?
A. It regularly receives money from the government.
B. All of its income comes from public donations.
C. It earns money mainly by selling different kinds of pets.
D. It is meant to adopt those disabled animals.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. A deaf dog’s new home. B. How to treat a deaf dog well.
C. The importance of the animal charity. D. Sign language commands.
C
Most of us set a goal with energy and motivation. If it is achieved, we will feel we are on cloud
nine. But in most cases, we can’t reach our goals easily. Why do we often fail to hit the target? The
answer lies in the disconnection between our brains’ evaluation of rewards and the “get it done” realities that influence our behavior.
Our brains are reward-driven organs charged by neurotransmitters (神经递质) that fuel our
drives and desires, and it’ s easy for us to get carried away in this chemical tsunami. So, when we set up a goal, our focus is on the reward. We picture getting the reward, and how we’ll feel when we make it, which pushes us into action. But once we begin, we come face to face with what’s really required to reach the goal and our focus shifts from reward to effort.
In other words, a focus on rewards fuels the pursuit(追求), but a focus on effort takes over
when the work starts. For example, getting up early to exercise for a new healthy lifestyle might seem like a good choice, but once your alarm goes off on a cold January morning, the rewards aren’t enough to get you up and out of bed. When we face the reality of our choices, we realize the effort is too much and give up.
In fairness, though, we don’t always have the best sense of how much effort something will
require, especially if it’s a goal we haven’t pursued before. Getting better at setting goals has much to do with figuring this out and not letting ourselves forget the lesson.
Next time, begin our goal pursuits with as much realistic acknowledgment of the effort required
as possible. Then, once we begin, refocus back to the reward and continue the efforts.
27. What does the underlined phrase “on cloud nine” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Scared. B. Overjoyed. C. Restless. D. Weary.
28. What may account for one’s unachieved goal?
A. Aiming high, working less. B. Speaking more, doing less.
C. More efforts, less speed. D. More pains, more gains.
29. What do people often fail to recognize in setting goals?
A. Ambition. B. Effort. C. Cost. D. Reward.
30. What’s the author’s advice to us?

D
There's a song by the great Jamaican singer Bob Marley called So Much Trouble in the World. Marley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of
tolerance between people. The UN understands this too --- that’s why it made Nov.16“International
Day for Tolerance”.
But first of all, what is tolerance? French philosopher Voltaire (1694-1778) can give us some help. According to him, tolerance is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty (脆弱) and error; let us pardon each other's folly --- that is the first law of nature.
Nobody's perfect; When we're tempted to criticize another person, we should perhaps remember
our own imperfections first.
Very often, people don't realize that they're intolerant. This is because intolerance has a lot to do with ignorance. For example, the UN's campaign is in part about the treatment of females by males. But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men don't put themselves in the shoes of women.
It's worth thinking a little about the words "tolerance" and "intolerance". Are they the best words
to describe the evils of which we're speaking here? To agree to be "tolerant" of someone isn't necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there's something wrong with them.
But it seems wrong that people should agree to "tolerate" people with black skin, for example.
And should women think they have received the respect they are due when men agree to "tolerate" them?
Still, what Voltaire said stands: We humans are not perfect and this weakness is something that
we all share. That's the reason why we should be tolerant.
It's a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our forgiveness. Bob Marley understood this. In the song mentioned above, he advised: "All you got to do: give a little." Or, as this older piece of wisdom says: "Write your love on a rock so it stays for eternity; write your hate in the sand so the waves will wash it away.”
32. According to Voltaire, tolerance is ___________.
A. being willing to express your love to others B. trying to overcome your imperfections
C. giving a hand to vulnerable groups D. accepting each other's weaknesses
33. In what sense is “tolerance” similar to “generosity”?
A. Humans are advised to treat others better.
B. Humans learned to find faults in others.
C. Humans need to give something to others.
D. Humans will change their attitudes to others.
34. The underlined word "this" in the last paragraph refers to _________.
A. giving things to others B. forgiving others
C. different attitudes toward love and hate D. the fact that humans are imperfect
35. What's the text mainly about?
A. The origin of the International Day of Tolerance.
B. The meaning and importance of tolerance.
C. The philosophy behind Bob Marley's song.
D. Effective ways to show tolerance.
第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
I have sometimes given money to beggars. 36 Please let me explain why.
First, for every dollar that we give to a beggar, the more profitable we make begging and, comparatively, the less profitable we make working. This is bad, for we want people to work, not beg. Working is productive while begging is at best neutral and often a burden. Second, the beggar who
receives the money might spend it on alcohol or drugs. 37
When I went to elementary school, I remember that I was very moved by a song named "Streets
of London". The song tells a heartbreaking story about some of London's poorest, an old man in particular. Not long ago, however, when I heard the song on the radio, it struck me that the man in the song does not live that horrible a life after all. Judging from the lyrics of the song, the man has shoes,
and occasional access to a newspaper. 38 So why should you give money to the beggar in the
developed world instead of the starving child in Africa?
It might be harsh to claim that it is immoral to give money to Western beggars. After all, it
seems reasonable that you can spend the money as you like. 39 If our aim is to benefit
ourselves, then giving money to beggars is not suitable. If our aim is to benefit others, then giving money to beggars is also wasteful.
In seeking to help others, we should not merely give to those who are geographically close to us
and whose appearance arouses our sympathy. 40 To achieve this, we should first decide how
much we are willing to spend helping others, and then donate money to the most efficient charity.
A. Many people die of hunger in Africa.
B. True as it might be, we should spend our money wisely.
C. Why not donate money to those in need of financial aid?
D. Upon reflection, however, I have come to change my mind.
E. You almost certainly spend money helping the wrong people.
F. In a world where thousands die of hunger every day, that's a pretty comfortable life.
G. Rather, we should aid those who are the least responsible for the situation they're in.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Raju’s family was the smallest family on the coastal line of Kanyakumari. Raju was 10 years old.
He was tall, dark and handsome and had a lot of dreams. He had always dreamt of living in a city. He was always his dad’s charm, as he was not quite happy to spend time with his mom. All he could remember about his mom was her scars, red and white scars on her face, neck and hands. He always felt unpleasant to see his mom’s face. But what he did not know was that his mom scratched her beauty to save him from a fire when he was one year old. Not wanting to burden him with it, Raju’s parents kept it a secret.
His mom Kamala used to drop him to school and pick him up every day. He felt awkward to see
his mom with that scarred face standing in front of the school gate. As he was laughing and chatting with his fellow school mates, all of them became silent and started staring at the gate. So, Raju turned towards the gate with a lot of curiosity. He froze when seeing his mom, face covered with a piece of cloth. Raju felt ashamed and rushed out of the school with lots of anger.
With days passing by, Raju started to dislike his mom more. He did not like to get picked up or
dropped by his mom. He felt that she was ugly and so abnormal. As he grew old, he stopped going out with her to the market or anywhere outside. Kamala tried her best to make her son happy, got him everything that he wanted and gave him his space. She understood what her son was going through and felt pity for herself and sad for her son, as she was helpless.
When Raju turned 15, he was sent to a city high school 67 kilometers away from his coastal
village. The very thought of not being with his ugly mother made him very happy.
Three years later, then came Raju’s graduation ceremony. His parents didn’t want to be absent from such an important occasion, so they managed to be there without informing Raju.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
