An ancient diamnd fund in Btswana cntains a never- befre- seen mineral that came frm deep inside Earth. The mineral — named davemaite — prvides a unique windw int deep- Earth chemistry.
Originally dug up in a mine in Orapa, Btswana, the diamnd is abut 4 millimetres wide and weighs 81 milligrams. A dealer sld it in 1987 t a scientist, but neither the dealer nr the scientist had any idea hw special it was. The diamnd was mre recently analysed by Oliver Tschauner at the University f Nevada.
Mst diamnds frm 120 t 250 kilmetres undergrund. Tschauner and his clleagues realised that the Btswanan diamnd was frm the lwer mantle (地幔), which begins 660 kilmetres belw the surface. After examining it using X-rays, they discvered tiny crystal s f anther mineral trapped inside. The crystals turned ut t be a frm f calcium silicate that was therised t exist in the lwer mantle but had never actually been bserved befre. They named the new calcium silicate mineral davemaite in hnur f deep- Earth scientist H-Kwang “Dave” Ma.
Nrmally, davemaite’s crystal structure wuld break apart if it was brught up t Earth’s surface because f the massive drp in pressure. But because it was trapped inside a diamnd, it was preserved n its lng jurney up t the Orapa mine. “When we brke pen the diamnd, the davemaite stayed intact fr abut a secnd, and then we saw it expand under the micrscpe and basically turn int glass,” says Tschauner.
The mlecules within it take n a particular cubic arrangement knwn as a pervskite structure. This structure shws it culd nly have frmed under the extreme cnditins experienced in the lwer mantle, where the pressure is mre than 200,000 times that fund at Earth’s surface. Davemaite is thught t make up abut 5 per cent f Earth’s lwer mantle, and is imprtant because it can als hst radiactive elements like uranium, thrium and ptassium-40 that heat Earth as they decay. Withut these radiactive elements, the Earth wuld have cled by nw.
8 What d we knw abut the mineral davemaite?
A. It was named in memry f a great plitician.
B It was discvered as sn as the diamnd was fund.
C. It had never actually been fund befre the discvery.
D. It had been stuck in a diamnd 200 kilmetres undergrund.
9. What des the underlined wrd “intact” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Divided.B. Overlked.C. Hidden.D. Undamaged.
10. Why is the mineral davemaite significant?
A. Because it has a cling effect.
B. Because its internal structure is special.
C. Because it cntains heat- prducing elements.
D. Because its frmatin backgrund is extreme.
11. What is the purpse f the text?
A. T explain the uses f a substance.
B. T intrduce the discvery f a mineral.
C. T stress the rle f deep- Earth chemistry.
D. T advcate the prtectin f radiactive elements.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据文章第三段的“The crystals turned ut t be a frm f calcium silicate that was therised t exist in the lwer mantle but had never actually been bserved befre.(这些晶体原来是硅酸钙的一种形式,理论上存在于下地幔中,但以前从未被观测到)”可知,在这次发现之前,davemaite这种矿物实际上从未被发现过。
根据上文“Nrmally, davemaite’s crystal structure wuld break apart if it was brught up t Earth’s surface because f the massive drp in pressure. But because it was trapped inside a diamnd, it was preserved n its lng jurney up t the Orapa mine.(通常情况下,如果由于压力的大幅下降而被带到地球表面,davemaite晶体结构会破裂。
根据文章最后一段“Davemaite is thught t make up abut 5 per cent f Earth’s lwer mantle, and is imprtant because it can als hst radiactive elements like uranium, thrium and ptassium-40 that heat Earth as they decay. Withut these radiactive elements, the Earth wuld have cled by nw.(Davemaite被认为约占地球下地幔的5%,它很重要,因为它还可以容纳铀、钍和钾-40等放射性元素,这些元素在衰变时会加热地球。如果没有这些放射性元素,地球现在应该已经冷却了)”可知,Davemaite还可以容纳铀、钍和钾-40 等放射性元素,这些元素在衰变时会加热地球。所以它的重要性在于含有产生热量的放射性元素。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的“An ancient diamnd fund in Btswana cntains a never- befre- seen mineral that came frm deep inside Earth. The mineral — named davemaite — prvides a unique windw int deep- Earth chemistry. Originally dug up in a mine in Orapa, Btswana, the diamnd is abut 4 millimetres wide.(在博茨瓦纳发现的一颗古老的钻石中含有一种前所未见的矿物,这种矿物来自地球深处。这种矿物被命名为davemaite,它为研究地球深部的化学成分提供了一个独特的窗口。这颗钻石最初是在博茨瓦纳的奥拉帕矿中挖掘出来的,直径约4毫米)”可推知, 本篇文章的目的是介绍了一种新发现的矿物davemaite。故选B。
