On the shres f Nrth Africa, ancient cities have std fr thusands f years. The clumns f Carthage, in mdern- day Tunisia, are a reminder f the nce busy Phenician and Rman prt, and alng the cast in what's nw Libya, lie the majestic ruins f Sabratha's Rman amphitheater (圆形剧场) clse (perhaps t clse) t the sea.
But extreme weather events and rising sea levels mean that bth, and arund 190 ther amazing heritage sites that line Africa's casts, will be at risk f severe flding and ersin (侵蚀) mre easily in the next 30 years, accrding t a recent study.
In this latest study, Nichlas Simpsn f the University f Cape Twn and his c- wrkers mapped ut a ttal f 284 heritage sites that are recgnised r under cnsideratin by the UNESCO Wrld Heritage Centre, in the 39 cuntries that cmprise the African cast. They calculated the likely percentage area f a site expsed t a “nce- in-a- century” extreme castal flding event. “In the 1970s, what used t be a nce-ın-a-100- year event happened nce in 100 years, ” Simpsn says, “ but what we' re seeing is that a nce- in-a-100- year event might be happening nce in 10 years ging frward when climate crisis is wrsening. ”
Sea levels have been rising at a faster rate ver the past three decades cmpared the past century, the research says. It als fund that 56 sites are currently in danger if a “nce- in-a- century” fld struck, and that by 2050, if greenhuse gas emissins cntinue, this number culd increase t 198 sites.
Accrding t the research, Nrth Africa has the largest number f threatened sites—frm the ancient ruins f Nrth Sinai that stretch between the Suez Canal and Gaza, t Tipasa, an ancient Phenician trading pst in present- day Algeria. Simpsn feels apprehensive abut this, hping that identifying such heritage sites might “raise alarm bells fr climate risk fr heritage in Africa”.
The study ntes that its findings will help priritize at-risk sites and highlight the need fr immediate prtective actin. “There's an imprtant message f lss and damage frm climate change t heritage, which we hpe will mbilize greater intent and actin, ” says Simpsn.

Muscle cntractin hardening is necessary fr enhancing strength and it als enables rapid reactins in living rganisms. Taking inspiratin frm nature, a team f researchers frm Queen Mary University f Lndn (QMUL) has successfully created an electrnic artificial muscle that changes between sft and hard states while als pssessing the remarkable ability t sense frces and defrmatins.
Dr Keta Zhang, a lecturer at QMUL and the lead researcher, explains the imprtance f variable- hardness technlgy in artificial muscle- like actuatrs (执行器) . “Empwering rbts, especially thse made frm flexible materials, with self- sensing capabilities is a key step twards true binic (仿生) intelligence,” says Dr Zhang.
The advanced artificial muscle develped by the researchers exhibits flexibility and stretchability similar t natural muscle, making it perfect fr integratin int cmplicated sft rbtic systems and adapting t different shapes. With the ability t bear ver 200% stretch alng the length directin, this flexible actuatr shws exceptinal durability.
By applying different vltages (电压) , the artificial muscle can rapidly adjust its hardness, achieving cntinuus hardness changes ver 30 times. Its vltage- driven nature prvides a significant advantage in terms f respnse speed ver ther types f artificial muscles. Additinally, this wnderful technlgy can mnitr its defrmatin thrugh resistance changes, remving the need fr additinal sensr arrangements and simplifying cntrl mechanisms while reducing csts.
This flexible variable- hardness technlgy can be widely used, ranging frm sft rbtics t medical applicatins. The integratin with the human bdy pens up pssibilities fr aiding individuals with disabilities r patients in perfrming necessary daily tasks. By integrating the self-sensing artificial muscle, wearable rbtic devices can mnitr a patient's activities and prvide resistance by adjusting hardness levels, facilitating muscle functin restratin.
“While there are still challenges t be addressed befre these medical rbts can be emplyed in clinical settings, this research represents an imprtant step twards human-machine integratin, ” highlights Dr Zhang. “It prvides a blueprint fr the future develpment f sft and wearable rbts. ”
12.What is a feature f the muscle develped by the researchers frm QMUL?

C.It functins withut electricity.D.It is equipped with extra sensrs.
13.What des paragraph 5 mainly tell us abut variable- hardness technlgy?
    A.Its wrking principles.B.Its design inspiratins.
    C.Its ptential applicatins.D.Its future imprvements.
14.What can we infer abut the research frm Dr Zhang?
A.It is f great significance.B.It lacks experts’ respnses.
C.It hardly meets challenges.D.It has been applied t hspitals.
15.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
